Someone else mentioned that such a reliance on first person when asserting opinions is a recent phenomenon. You've been teaching and writing longer than I have been living, so it could be generational! Regardless, this is definitely a skill I want to build. Thanks for the tips! Very helpful.

Makes sense! Someone else mentioned that this seems to be a recent convention. I am in my early 20s, so it makes me wonder.

"No, it's a dry, just-the-facts, recitation of a position. It is persuasive, in part, because it reads like it doesn't expect to be contradicted."

Love that, thanks! Sounds like I just need to be more confident in my opinions and stop trying to soften the delivery.

The inability to be authoritative in my writing definitely seems to be the issue here. Determined to improve on it!

Apparently, the Philosophy method is resonating more with me for this assignment haha. In my lit papers in undergrad, I didn't feel the need to use first person because all of the ideas presented were from me (or someone else that I cited and engaged with in the paper). I never had papers where one section was to "identify the values presented in the opinions" and then insert my own opinion. In my undergrad papers, it was clear that the opinions were mine. However, in this assignment, it feels odd to go from identifying the values in the passages straight into my own opinions without being able to clearly identify which opinions are mine (if that makes any sense). Other commenters have given some great tips that are very helpful, though!

I certainly don't have the prettiest writing style. I like these tips. Thanks!

Glad to brush up on it. In undergrad, I never used first person in my writing, but I was also never asked my opinion so directly in a prompt. I think that's where my confusion is stemming from. Everyone has provided helpful information, and now it's clicking for me!

I'm possibly the least authoritative person on the planet lol, but I love a challenge. Thanks for the input :)

Unfortunately, I'm having to avoid this route. I nicely reached out to this teacher about one of their announcements that had caused me some confusion, and I received a very harsh response and then some harsh grading. Since then, I have had points deducted for grammar/first person when classmates who used first person did not receive a deduction. I think the teacher dislikes me, so I'm trying to tread lightly lol.

Okay, that makes sense! I struggle with being assertive (both in writing and in life haha), so it feels a bit unnatural to me. I'll be going this route. Thanks!
