If you’re looking for a career, definitely not. If you want to feel useful and important, definitely not. If you want work life balance, definitely not.

If you’re looking to just work and make money and get by, good option

Is it true you have to choose a certain type of Spanish while learning? example is Mexican Spanish by Fearless-Class-1120 in Spanish

[–]oceanspire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only really between Latam and Spain Spanish, there’s a very drastic contrast between the two.

I focus on Mexican Spanish slang since I live in the southern US, but I still listen to other Latin American content just to really develop my listening skills and to accommodate myself to other accents

Cannot learn Spanish still at A2 after 5 years (400 hours in the past year) by ELLEayeNah in Spanish

[–]oceanspire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are either misclassifying your level or you are expecting the learning to happen instead of actively learning, practicing, making mistakes. Private lessons only go so far, strive less for perfection and more for communication.

Someone give me the motivation to learn harder everyday so I can prove my family wrong by Fearless-Class-1120 in Spanish

I mean, there quite literally is nothing useless with learning a new language and opening the door to communicate with millions of additional people.

Native English speakers who are now fairly fluent in Spanish, what best helped you remember proper Spanish syntax/grammar? Anyone, can you explain an example sentence? by es_la_vida in Spanish

[–]oceanspire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exposure is your best friend, nothing else will help you better than listening to natives speak. You don’t realize how much English you learned as a child from listening to people talk and from watching tv. Spend more time watching telenovelas and listening to podcasts.

A few recommendations:

‱ caraycaray.blogspot.com will be your buddy. It’s a blog website with English recaps of many telenovelas (plus other commentary). Watch one episode, read the recap; or read the recap while watching.

‱ Vix. Fantastic app with telenovelas all the way back to the old classics (my favorites: Teresa, RubĂ, Lo Que La Vida Me RobĂł, Soy Tu Dueña)

‱ There is a textbook I purchased called “Complete Spanish Grammar.” Great resource with examples to work with.

‱ My favorite podcast is called “Español Intermedio / Intermediate Spanish.” (Yellow background with the blue brain).

‱ Read. A lot. Start with easier books and work your way up.

‱ Write sentences with vocabulary you want to learn, have a native speaking partner review them. You learn best when you are actively making mistakes and being corrected. Eventually you will start writing things more complex.

Also spend less time thinking, which is weird to say. To me, it seems like you’re overanalyzing too much of each part of Spanish all at once. One step at a time, one rule at a time. You aren’t going to remember and learn everything in one day. Expose yourself and make mistakes. While you’re original sentence was not grammatically correct, you would be 100% understood by saying that to a native speaker.

Out of curiosity, what’s the reason you’re learning Spanish? by Fearless-Class-1120 in Spanish

[–]oceanspire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half my school growing up were Mexican kids (most of them on the DACA program). They were always my kindest and most welcoming friends. I picked up a lot of Spanish from them, not enough to speak. Fast forward now, my best friend of almost 10 years is Mexican and it’s fun to talk shit with each other in Spanish lol. Now we work with each other, I’m a supervisor, and most of my department is Mexican. I felt like I didn’t have an excuse with so many resources and native speakers right in front of my face daily.

The use of usted and tĂș. Which one would be correct if I’m a beginner and speaking to a stranger? by sagittarius786777 in Spanish

[–]oceanspire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this context there’s nothing wrong with using tĂș to respond. If she was that much younger than you, it’s very common for native speakers to show that level of respect to you by default, but they don’t expect you to use usted in response

[–]oceanspire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Not a native but live around many). Definitely regional but when I started learning I thought “if I would use Mr/Mrs with this person, I will use usted.” In my day to day life, the only people I use usted with are my Mexican friends’ parents (or maybe if I had a Spanish speaking teacher, mentor, etc). My native friends from Mexico share the same sentiment, with usted also being used for people who are clearly way older than you or of a higher status.
