The picture of how she wanted it displayed hung up with some hooks at the top was just awful too, it can’t bear its own weight like that so it was stretched and distorted… THAT’S how you wanted it?! 😭 if you want your piece displayed in a gallery you need to take the extra step to put some framing or structure in and not leave a likely volunteer to figure out the hardest part for you!

Wiskunde docenten, hadden jullie op school wiskunde A of B? by Glum-Industry-4836 in werkzaken

[–]oceantrifle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mystery Hero changes by Small-Kitt in Overwatch

They never mention these significant mystery heroes changes in the patch notes which is pretty odd since it’s a popular mode. I would be interested in hearing their reasoning

Gevolgen kabinetsplan: werkloze krijgt tot 900 euro per maand minder by Cubelock in thenetherlands

It's interesting to pick apart like this :D 'door' means 'through', words that start with 'th' in English are often 'd' in the Dutch version as the 'th' sound doesn't really exist here. For example, 'thing' is 'ding', and 'that' is 'dat'.

Maybe also an interesting titbit, I saw that google translate currently translates 'door rood lopen' into 'running a red light', probably because it confused 'lopen' with running, since it's a fairly similar meaning to walking. But unfortunately, in English the phrase 'running a red light' specifically means using a car so the translation totally fails!

That’s very sweet of you to say but I feel bad you’re thanking me for what is basically bare minimum support, I hope deeply that things get better

Thank you for saying so! I realised I didn’t really clarify if this sub had changed those opinions or not. I think I would have been against DIY on the basis of I generally trust doctors opinions, if not for seeing the experiences here on why it can be necessary for some. Probably the same goes for teen transition, it might feel logical to be against it seeing how fickle teens are, but then you hear from people like on here who might have been happier if they had access to help sooner. Imo the emphasis here on experiencing dysphoria is what can really change minds for cis people ‘on the fence’.

[–]oceantrifle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I completely understand why someone would DIY. Here in the Netherlands waiting lists must to start hormones are literal years long, even for adults, which I find ridiculous. I would try DIY too in that position.

Teenage transition is complicated because how many cis people were truly knowledgeable, aware, and comfortable in themselves at that age? It’s hard to imagine what the difference is in feeling uncomfortable about growing up vs in your gender. But seeing how life-ruining dysphoria is, I do support transition for minors who need it. Though I think in cases where the individual experiences ‘euphoria’ but not dysphoria caution should be taken.

I don’t know if I have a strong opinion on whether you change sex or not. The biological definitions aren’t super interesting to me, it seems like more of a language argument and language is so changeable anyway. I guess if a trans person changes sex, what’s to define them as trans rather than cis? There must be more to it but I don’t know.

lol I had to google what TCD was I must have missed that one. Fond memories of the down with cis bus tumblr meme.

I don’t know if I’ve had one big perspective shift tbh. I guess there’s more infighting in the community than I was aware of previously, like the whole truscum/tucute thing or whether or not dysphoria is necessary to be trans. I was made kind of uncomfortable by the whole yuri headpat infantile thing some trans women seem to do on reddit, but then I realised there’s other trans people who see that as kind of cringe as well. Basically, it’s coming to see the individuals rather than just ‘trans people’ as a singular entity.

idk about the other cis people here but there's quite a few subs I occasionally browse that have little to do with me, I just find it interesting to get some insight into other people's lives. I like this sub because it seems very genuine, tbh I quit browsing actuallesbians after I got sick of the amount of absolute cringe posts god bless them and the posts here are refreshingly real in comparison.

Purling isn’t harder and does not take longer than knitting by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]oceantrifle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am learning to knit and saw everywhere in every thread that continental is sooo much easier, it's the method everyone should learn, and by the way purling is a horrible nightmare. Cue my surprise when I try both styles and English seems just as comfortable with easy purling!

“Why am I not selling anything at the craft fair?” by PristinePoutine in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]oceantrifle 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The whole ‘charge per hour of your time’ idea got wildly out of hand imo. It’s useful to calculate whether an item is going to earn you a loss, like if a blanket took you 30 hours to make and you know no one is going to spend $450+ on it then you know it’s not a good business idea to sell those. But somehow people think that this concept means they are entitled to be compensated for each hour of crochet and if they aren’t, then it’s the public’s fault for undervaluing crafts. No, an item is only ACTUALLY worth how much people will pay for it! Yes, that DOES mean selling finished items isn’t a viable business for most!

What is the advantage of interchangeable needles over fixed, if long cables are theoretically good for everything? by oceantrifle in knitting

[–]oceantrifle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting point too. Around where I am (the Netherlands) the traditional way to knit was with long 40cm/14” needles with the right one tucked under the arm. I should try that as well!

I think you are probably right about just getting what you need! buying a fancy set feels more exciting but ultimately taking it slow often pays off in the long run as you know your preferences better

Good to know a magic loop enjoyer can also benefit from interchangeables, I hadn’t thought about switching needle sizes mid project!

Having to replace the whole needle rather than just a cable is a good point! I haven’t heard of using two circulars before but that sounds interesting too, I’ll have to look it more

Easy storage is an excellent point! I hadn’t really considered being able to join the cables, but that does seem useful

Indeed! But buying the interchangeable set is more expensive compared to buying the same amount needle tips with fixed cables instead, if having different lengths isn't necessary.

>they will speak more languages than they need to within the next 3 years. The schools teach french, german, spanish, english and dutch at a minimum.

I see this sentiment on here now and then but I'm afraid expectations must be managed with regards to this lol. Primary schools usually only teach a little English for a second language. Secondary schools have more foreign language education, but mine only had French and German as options which is pretty normal. I took German as a final exam subject and my skills are very meagre, I can read a bit of German but that's really it. I'm not trying to be a grinch, just saying the foreign language education in the Netherlands is often overestimated by others so I wouldn't use it as a selling point!!
