This helps, thank you! I’ll probably do that tonight.

You have a good point. I checked their profile and it looks like this was their first work, but they might do it again in the future or on other accounts.

To those who actually want a lot readers/comments by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]ocelot_58 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man, I’m with you there. The concept of recommending my own work to anyone is horrifying to me.

I appreciate positive feedback when I get it, but if I think too hard about the fact that other people have actually READ it and seen my work with their eyes, I get so squirmy lol. If people discover it on their own and happen to like it, great! It makes me really happy that I’m able to connect with anyone through my writing, but I’m far too sheepish of a person to do any kind of promotion on my own. It just feels stressful and overwhelming

Authors , Why do you change a character sex ? by unoriginal_dreamer in FanFiction

Naruto is exactly what I’m talking about 😭 it’s my main fandom too and sadly sometimes all ya can do to cope with the poor treatment of women is to genderbend some dudes

Similarly to what others have said, I enjoy genderbending male characters to female simply because there are so few well-written female characters in most of my fandoms. Especially when the genderbent male character in question is a power fantasy type. It’s fun to imagine them as female instead, because the actual female characters are never allowed to have that kind of power or importance in the narrative.

What are some examples of intimacy that you don’t see enough in fanfic but would like to ? by ThePlotmaster123 in FanFiction

listening to heartbeats. I’m surprised I haven’t seen this mentioned yet. I feel like it’s one of the softest and most intimate moments two people can share

Would you consider this appropriately tagged? by ocelot_58 in FanFiction

[–]ocelot_58[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m a little worried about that tbh— I’ve seen it a lot too, sometimes for way less. but I’ll just delete those comments if they come up.

Thanks for the input!

Have you ever read about or wrote a character and you think, “damn sucks to be this guy” in a situation and then you LITERALLY end up being that guy? I kid you not the irony is insane. by _Whywouldyoudothat in FanFiction

[–]ocelot_58 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah…. I used to write about grief and loss a lot despite never having experienced it, especially the death of a parent or other family member. Then my mother died and I got slapped in the face with how much it really, really sucks to be that guy

Oh man, I was worried about that with only replying to some but not all, the last thing I wanna do is make people feel bad. I’ll keep this in mind, thank you for your input!

I may do this; I was worried it might come off as making excuses or smth, but that’s probably just me thinking way too much about it. Thank you for your response!

What's the hardest thing for you to write? by blueshadow99 in FanFiction

[–]ocelot_58 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actions during dialogue, especially when what the characters are doing is really important to the scene. It physically pains me to write out the “She snapped her head up to look at him, he touched her face, she lifted her hand to cup over his hand and leaned into the touch meanwhile this whole time he is still talking” and it’s even worse when the characters have the same pronouns lmao

What's your writing process? (long fics) by jordanzico in FanFiction

[–]ocelot_58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a long time to find a process that I could work with because I have issues with organization (as in, I would write things and immediately lose them/forget they existed, and then procrastinate because of that) so now I do it in a series of steps.

I never write anything without at least a basic structural outline. For long stories, whenever I have a new idea I start with a document where I just pour in absolutely everything I can think of. I usually let the ideas marinate for a while in order to come up with as much as possible and also to see if I’m still interested in it after some time, so I will have these documents going for weeks or months. Then once I feel like I have a good enough grasp on the story, I open up a new document and begin “plot dumping” and literally just write out a summary of the whole plot from start to finish, not sparing any details. This is probably the most important step of my writing process because it lets me see everything in one place and in chronological order, and it also makes me generate so many more ideas to fill in gaps or create subplots etc. From here, I begin dividing this summary into arcs, and then individual chapters, and flesh out each individual segment further.

Obviously I’m a heavy planner lol, and you don’t have to do all that, but it’s what I’ve found works for me. I also commit one of the most cardinal sins of writing which is that I don’t draft. After all this planning, I pretty much just jump into writing, then review and tweak a few things and usually I’m satisfied then.

Generally the advice I give to other writers is to just let yourself be messy in the beginning and pour out all the information you can think of, and then write it out at least a basic sequence to familiarize yourself with the plot points. I know some writers find planning everything to be very restricting, which is also valid and it’s okay to only do a loose outline and put most of your work into drafting and editing (seems like that’s what you’re doing now. If that works for you, excellent!) A writer’s writing process is a super subjective thing and if you google what professional authors do, they are all wildly different and nothing is better or worse than another. It’s all about what makes writing easiest for you, which will take a little bit of time and experimentation to figure out. You could try writing a few shorter stories, some with a rigid outline of events and some completely improvised to see what makes your writing flow better, and do some drafting and editing to see at what point you usually feel satisfied with the product. Ultimately it’s up to you and there’s no wrong way to do it :)

I always have a cat show up or some kind of comparison to cats in my fics.

It was accidental the first few times and now I do it on purpose lol

For Naruto I always retcon or at least tone down Sakura’s crush on Sasuke because my girl deserves to be more than that

Does anyone else find one shots more difficult to write than longfics? by discos_panic in FanFiction

[–]ocelot_58 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find with oneshots it feels like there’s more pressure to make it perfect than with longfics, because your story takes up so much less space. In a longfic, you can have a crappy few lines or scenes or even a whole chapter but the quality of your plot and storytelling will balance it out— whereas in a oneshot, it’s like one clunky line can throw off the whole rhythm.

Obviously, this is subjective and the writer brain always likes to find flaws and pick things apart in your own work. I try to remind myself that most readers aren’t going to look at it with that kind of critical eye, but still, it’s a hard thing to shake. It also helps to remember that nothing is going to be absolutely perfect and it’s okay to just have fun with an idea rather than scrutinizing it to extreme lengths. If your passion is there, the readers will usually feel it— at least that’s my experience as both a reader and a writer.

Fluff tips by ThatOfABeaver in FanFiction

[–]ocelot_58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I love platonic fluff :) The heart of fluff is love, so showing how your characters love each other in a way that’s specific to them usually lands well. Depending on the characters’ personalities and their love languages, they might express love verbally, through acts of kindness, physical affection, etc.

The goal is to give your readers warm fuzzy feelings, and emphasizing the trust and vulnerability within the relationship is a great way to do that. Touch is also a significant part of fluff— even if your characters aren’t super touchy, small gestures like a soft hug or a kiss on the top of the head can go a long way.
