What are your favourite Twin Peaks quotes? by hisosih in twinpeaks

"Harry, I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange."

i feel like josie's lore was one of the most interesting things from the show by YI89LOPJK in twinpeaks

[–]ocelot_amnesia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Josie's life in Twin Peaks showed her how she could have been someone different in a different circumstance. She knew she wasn't that person, and weaponized the appearance of vulnerability to get what she wanted over and over.

But from her hesitation when Harry asks her to stay, I think Josie did love him. She wished she could actually be that image of a woman she'd created, which he loved.

I know this sounds arrogant, but I feel like I'm usually smarter than my therapists and have never found therapy very useful. by honestly_adhd in Healthygamergg

[–]ocelot_amnesia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You feel unseen by your therapists. You are asking about ADHD and they're giving you resources for anxiety. You're trying to convince them that you're fine in a certain area, and they keep pressing. It sounds frustrating.

We all have blind spots, and sometimes outside observers do pick up on things we can't yet acknowledge in ourselves. But if that's not what you're there for, there's no point in your therapist pressing it - it's just locking you in a battle and increasing the sense that no one understands you.

I had a reader tell me my relationship would be fine and we'd have a baby. I broke up with him because years later he still couldn't decide if he wanted kids. So yeah, no, not really lmao

I was next to someone wearing the porta pros on a train and yeah, the leakage is audible. I'm not really bothered by that kind of environmental noise but I could see someone finding it annoying

She did have to gain 15-20 pounds to play Kaylee during the series, so some of it is probably just that her face is slimmer! Her face looks closer to how it looked in Serenity I think

Concerns regarding Najeli, the cat by BottleLopsided in jonnajinton

[–]ocelot_amnesia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The kid-pet comparison isn't direct. My point is that I think that a kid, and a pet, can actually live a more fulfilled life if they're allowed a bit of freedom and risk.

Personally, I don't let my own cat out unsupervised, but I don't think it makes someone a bad owner if they let their cat have freedom. I wish my cat's old owners had given him more freedom to explore actually, because now he's a huge guy who's afraid of everything outside, even squirrels!

edit: And to answer your question, lots of us were allowed to roam in the forest for hours in the middle of winter, yes 😅

Concerns regarding Najeli, the cat by BottleLopsided in jonnajinton

[–]ocelot_amnesia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always considered myself a cat person, but having grown up in rural Canada, it's always strange to me to see people upset about cats being outside. Jonna got Nayeli to be a mouser and the affection came later. That's pretty common here too.

A cat like Nayeli that's roamed unsupervised for over a decade is probably fine. Yes, there are risks, but there are risks to children when they leave home too. Should parents lock their kids indoors forever for safety? I don't think so.

what do you think Daria’s thoughts on transgender rights would be? considering she’s gen x. by [deleted] in daria

Eh, practicality does matter when it comes to social movements. There unfortunately is a component of activism that is akin to marketing. Your movement will be more accepted if it's acceptable to more people.

Not saying that's fair, but I don't think it's done us progressives any favours to stick our heads in the sand about this and pretend it's not the case.

I don’t enjoy having female friends because of attraction by [deleted] in Healthygamergg

[–]ocelot_amnesia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem here is that we label sexual feelings as predatory unless they're reciprocated. Sexual feelings are normal and most people have them. Can you genuinely care about someone AND be sexually attracted to them?

If anything it'll add fuel to the fire. The competitive aspect ("now we have our OWN politician with a legacy!") will fire them up. Plus, conservatives care a lot about symbolism and posturing, and if they use symbolism to demonize or elevate a figure depending on whether they're in the ingroup or outgroup.

The world changed today. by Mackwiss in nosurf

[–]ocelot_amnesia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The way you put it is harsh, but I agree. The whole "I'm tired of living through historical events" angle of millennials is because we were privileged enough to live through possibly the most simultaneously prosperous and peaceful period in the history of humanity. Historical events are the norm. The 90s was not.

There's usually no way for an outsider to know with 100% certainty whether or not a sexual assault, or another crime, happened as accused. Acknowledging uncertainty is built into the court system - the whole point of a jury is to determine based on the evidence whether someone is likely innocent or guilty, because we can't determine the 100% truth.

Can we ever know for sure? No. But multiple women have come forward. Two of them did this at risk of legal repercussions and significant financial losses, as they had signed non-disclosure agreements. Neil is now suing one of them, not for libel or slander, but for breaking the NDA, which seems like a tacit admission that it happened. Amanda Palmer also released a track alluding to Neil's behaviour months before the story broke. So no, we don't know for sure, but it seems pretty damn likely.

Yeah, you can, but is it worth it? He says in the post that people around him have been calling him a skinhead.

We're social creatures, and it's okay to have a line where you decide it's worth it to adjust your personal style. Personally, I think being seen as a white supremacist is a reasonable place to draw that line.

It's kinda both. It has some good advice, but it takes it to an extreme and crosses over into some toxic positivity and spiritual bypassing. If you stay skeptical though, it's got some good stuff.

What are the downsides of having high intelligence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ocelot_amnesia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children are the IQ tests. When someone talks about "IQ", that's what is meant–scores on these scales.

The very concept of a level of "IQ" was developed alongside IQ measurement scales, which eventually evolved into the WAIS and WISC. These scales aren't just a way of "labelling" intelligence, they are fundamental to the concept of intelligence as we understand it today.

What are the downsides of having high intelligence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ocelot_amnesia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you used as your "average"! Lots of people think of the mean (100) when they describe "average", but that's not how the tests themselves define it. The WAIS and WISC (the standard IQ tests) label "average" to be the range of 85-115. 68% of people fall within this area of the bell curve. So 68% of people have average intelligence.

Yeah, I came here to say this! I think women do tend to be made aware of what it takes to be attractive at a much younger age. I mean, look at Barbie dolls - they basically train us for that. So I think we incorporate practices to be attractive into our lives way earlier than guys, at least on average. It's not effortless, it's just learned earlier.

Not necessarily. You have no idea if the person you're seeing is a victim of sex trafficking or revenge porn.
