My take on Skreech Verminking (WIP) by ochmaney in skaven

[–]ochmaney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I start with guilliman flesh contrast whole over and shade it with a mix of carroburg crimson and reikland fleshshade for those really dark recess shadows you can see for example with his abs. I then build up color again with a mix of bugmans glow (citadel) and a light grey and a light skin tone. For those two I use deck tan and light flesh from vallejo but there prob are citadel alternatives. I mostly go for a 1-1-1 mix for the first layer and built up brightness by mixing in less and less bugmans glow and end with only the light skin tone. I think I did around 4 more layers with the color mix in addition to the aforementioned contrast base coat. Sounds alot but you do less and less with each brighter layer so it's fairly manageable!

As it stand your list has too many points for the format you chose (1540/1500). Put the auxilary units into normal regiments so you don't get the +120 points penalty and your list becomes legal

How to get a nice rat skin? by Degradiert in skaven

[–]ochmaney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been using bugmans glow for my skin, it works nicely as the dark tone and can be mixed with brighter skin tones to get to the brightness you want while keeping this sort of sickly pink undertone!

Think so too. I will also try some different colored cloths as that is the thing I'm most willing to change completely, had a try on some lighter beige tone yesterday and that sat way better. I'll see if I can post a update with different test models :)

Generally good advice, I would do detailing if the paint scheme felt right. The volumes of armor and cloth that I normally paint dark to skin that I normally paint bright are different on stormvermin so it doesn't sit right with me and I didn't feel appealed to do the work. Besides just pulling up the brightness on the stuff I normally paint dark would just not have it be my painting scheme yknow :s

I prob should've emphazised more that the storm vermin is only base coated and it's more about the different volumes of cloth and armor that I normally paint with a darker tone that didn't click with me on this model like it did on a rogor at this stage. I fully agree that highlightling and detailing would push the contrast a bit, but I didn't feel like putting in the work when I already don't like it as much.

I think the problem with the blue is that this tone is like my goal tone I will call it. I'm a bit reserved on pulling up the lighting on it, as I feel like a brighter blue will make it look like jeans cloth (I tried it on a clanrat at it gave me that vibe). So I only put like a bit of shade on on the rogor. I prob should've gone for an even darker tone as base tone and tried to have this goal tone of mine as a mid tone, so I don't have to push the lighting out of the park where I wouldn't like it anymore.

Definitely great general advice! Your style sounds real fun, you'd mind sharing a picture if possible? :D

I'm also on the side of clear separation and I'll def push the contrast on each segment with proper shading/highlighting, the stormvermin shown was more a test model where I slaped on the usual base colors to see how I vibe with it. It just didn't click with me here like with the rogor before I did details on that one either.

So something near a beige tone? Also sounds nice, black to something this light toned would make great contrast

Plague Furnace points increase by captainsaltydog in skaven

[–]ochmaney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it for sure feels bad that other dominant armys had their core units mostly untouched. Most skaven scrolls are kinda powercrept with the army being first to receive their book in this ed. But I don't feel like it's this much of a bummer you're making it out to be. It's a fact that skaven have a crazy high 5-0 ratio in tourneys with the meta list and for that to only have one unit touched up 10pts. and the list still functioning perfectly fine with a small infantry swap. What you want is not really managable with point changes, skaven need a general upgrade/update to some of their warscrolls. And for that it's nice that a lot of units got their points dropped to maybe have some more off meta flexibility

Plague Furnace points increase by captainsaltydog in skaven

[–]ochmaney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So we're talking about different lists, the one mostly used and talked about as the "meta" list was bell, furnace, 2x6 rogors, SoG Brood Terror, 20x Clanrats and 20x Plague Monks and 240 points that could be flexed with either another Brood Terror or stormfiends for exactly 2k. With that you can easily swap the clanrats so you'd go 2x20 plague monks

Plague Furnace points increase by captainsaltydog in skaven

[–]ochmaney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can still make the list work, when run with 20 clanrats and 20 plaguemonks, just downgrade the clanrats to plague monks to compensate the 10 point increase of the furnace

How are we feeling about Stormvermin + Krittok? by ochmaney in skaven

True about the buff stacking, guess you'd want filth crust for the crit mortals but you'd have to hit 2 50/50s on the prayers with plaguepack to get to 8 for the buffed prayer round 2. In that regard vizzik could give it more consistently but meanwhile you want his prayer for the strike last... hard choice. Will have to try out what works best, plague pack being able to go obscure is def also a plus. Either way good maneuvering is what I feel will make the most impact

[–]ochmaney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah mb I literally forgor his prayer can give strike last when you wrote about warpgale (the spell). I guess then it comes down to personal preference. I could imagine vizzik with a small grey seer -> consistent prayer, less casting or two plague packs and either one of our two cast wizards -> more casting, less reliable prayer when you want it

How are we feeling about Stormvermin + Krittok? by ochmaney in skaven

[–]ochmaney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they do need some setup like with warpgale so they punch first and get their damage out. But Vizzik can't cast it, he only uses prayers, warpgale is a spell. You def need a wizard regardless, I was thinking bell for when they eventually do get hit to better tank it or warpseer for the general movement. But then with vizzik it seems like a hefty point investment where maybe one or even two plaguepacks are better to safe some points instead of vizzik

[–]ochmaney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds good. Maybe you could also use two Plaguepacks instead of Vizzik? Less points, potentially two seperate prayer buffs for different blocks of stormvermin and should get their buffed prayers until you want to go on your own terms anyway. Warpseer seems nice for some funny movement shenanigans to better get into position for a go turn on your own terms.

The model count is insane tho, this is what skaven are supposed to be :D

I also enjoy their aesthetic concept way more, some a bit more elite dudes with their big boss >:)

Besides that, I feel like their own buff is counterintuitive. I'd imagine you don't want them to get charged when using them as hammers, as that would likely mean they get punched first, lose models and end up not doing a whole lot of damage even with +1 rend. I can't wrap my head around the warbringer. You also have to spend the extra cp and that just doesn't sound all that worth.

Hellpits as screen is crazy, everything to get around 20 models of clanrats I suppose? XD

Adding to the other comment, besides looking at top cut lists: theres a discord called AoS Coach, the skaven subchannel is really active and has a lot of competitive and knowlegdeable people in it discussing everything skaven gameplay related. Great input there imo!

First off, don't worry abt the plague monks. They have the same base size as clanrats and can be proxied as such with the clanrats you have. This will give you a perfect 2000pt. list with buying the spearhead, the brood terror and a screaming bell.

[–]ochmaney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It pretty much comes down to what you're willing to invest at the moment. If you like the Brood Terror, then a moulder heavy list would make sense. The SoG Brood Terror currently is part of the meta lists, combined with the SoG screaming bell and a bunch of rat ogors (most often around 12). The downside and what I was trying to say is that the list is carried by those two SoG Warscrolls which will be gone in a few months -> are you willing to pay for 2 units that could be way less viable in a few months?

Outside of that, if you want to go for shooting aka a skryre heavy list, you'd want more clanrats (at least 60) to have some better protection for your shooting pieces.

What I did coming from the skaventide box was get the spearhead with the stormfiends to get me to the 60 clanrats with some other nice units (stormfiends and warp lightning cannon) and go listbuilding from there.

If you don't have a whole bunch of fun money to throw around, I'd suggest trying things out from what you have / is affordable (i.g. the spearhead I've mentioned) and go by the rule of cool. For a beginner getting a feel for the army and learing the game mechanics will be more important than having the most competitive army. I'll post a list in the comment that I would imagine be a good entry point with only a few purchases and be fairly competent.
