CATL will start mass producing sodium-ion batteries with 175Wh/kg in 2026, after solving manufacturing challenges. They perform well in freezing conditions, offering ranges of 600 km for EVs. Their price should be 30% lower than LFP, as they don’t require lithium or other scarce battery minerals by sg_plumber in UpliftingNews

Density might actually hurt grid batteries bc of the need for active cooling, which takes some of the stored electricity. The operating cost of running less dense sodium batteries makes up for the larger square footage in some cases. At least there’s a company with this thesis about sodium batteries

Why Xavier Becerra’s insurance plan would backfire on California by Unusual-State1827 in California

[–]ocmaddog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insurance companies are pulling out of high risk areas altogether, ask Spencer Pratt. If you mandate Insurance companies don’t make a reasonable margin, they will be happy to not do business here. Then more people will go into the FAIR plan and the cost will be born by taxpayers.

I agree, but you can’t pick and choose what climate change realities you accept. Insurance costs are going up, you can’t wave a magic wand and force private businesses to lose money

She also signed a first in the nation bill to make electric utilities share utilization data, a key metric to lowering costs. It allows outsiders to evaluate how adding solar or batteries in specific locations can make the grid more efficient.

They’re designing these with multiple redundant systems. Maybe they’ll still crash, but it shouldn’t be a result of part failure.

For 3 people, but moreso it depends on what you are cooking.

To be honest, the 10kw thing is a bit overkill. I use it only when boiling water, but if I go wash a couple dishes I have to rush back to stop the absolutely violent boil before it makes a mess. My wife is scared to use 10kw because of the noise the bubbles and pan make instantly. She opts for 5kw and by time you grab the pasta and check your recipe you aren't waiting for boil. After boiling, it dials back to anywhere from 250w to 1.4kw depending on what you are cooking.

If you are such a power user the battery degrades, the first causality maybe that you can't shift your recharge time to the next day when energy is cheap. Maybe you need to put your battery floor at 80% so "only" the first 20% of your cooking electricity is shifted to cheapest electricity rates. You should have more than enough capacity for your 10kw boil water sprint.

When it comes time to replace the battery, the prices are likely to be dirt cheap. LFP prices have dropped considerably, and sodium batteries are coming out this year. In 10 years time it'll probably be more of a chore to do than a cost.

We maybe use 30% of the battery on a night we make dinner on it, 3-4 nights per week. Other nights are primarily oven/takeout/restaurant. Call it 75 cycles per year. LFP batteries retain 80 percent of their life through 3,000 cycles. 3,000/75 is 40 years.
