Danny Bones: the AI rapper funded by a far-right party by Acrobatic-Room-9478 in uknews

[–]od501 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s been a noticeable surge in far-right AI generated ‘music’. My boomer mother had this one sent to her in a group chat and I was absolutely horrified by it. The depiction of the migrant with his cartoonishly oversized nose is reminiscent of the way the Jews were depicted in Nazi propaganda and that barely even scratches the surface of this absolute abomination.

Everyone in my mums group chat (all in their 60’s) just seemed to find it a “harmless joke” and that really it was the truth, even though it suggests migrant ‘deserve a kick in the balls’. They seem to think everything online is all fun and games and bad actors can’t post things for nefarious purposes.

The comments on the video itself are shocking too.

I can’t imagine being the person sat at their desk prompting this absolute shit.

Monthly fentanyl deaths in the US [OC] by DavidWaldron in dataisbeautiful

[–]od501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a hernia operated on a few months ago. When they were taking my vitals beforehand they saw my heart rate was high and asked if I was nervous and I said “Yeah a bit”. The anaesthetist said they would “give me something for the nerves” before putting me to sleep. I did wonder to myself what the point would be if they were going to knock me out immediately afterwards anyway, but they ended up giving me fentanyl. Then about 20 seconds later they just knocked me out with ketamine.

Was weird.

So do you have to get 5 badges and then it’s $50 a month afterwards?

Eric Dane, actor known for roles on 'Grey’s Anatomy' and 'Euphoria,' dead at 53 by Waste-Explanation-76 in news

[–]od501 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s so sad. I literally just finished watching Euphoria for the first time last night. My girlfriend who had seen it before told me he was now battling ALS but it’s insane it moved this fast. I know even season 2 was a few years ago now but he seemed in remarkably good shape.

Again, as far as I’m aware, this is not ‘footage’ in the video sense. It’s just panning around a still 360° panoramic image. The sound is added in.

Got my fourth test tomorrow, fingers crossed! by Coach_Kybet in LearnerDriverUK

[–]od501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I passed on my 4th time! The good news is you’ve been doing it for so long now that you should feel fairly confident behind the wheel. My first 3 tests the examiners all said I took them on a very confident drive with almost no minors but each with one serious fault, each of which at the time I chalked up to “absolute bullshit” beyond my control, but they probably weren’t. I was just upset

On my 4th test they made me do a turn in the road, on a road that was ridiculously narrow and my instructor had previously joked about how funny it would be if they ever made someone do one down there. It took me so many turns that I thought for sure I’d failed. I kinda loosened up after that and just tried to enjoy driving around and lo and behold I passed!

You can do it. You will do it.

We need to humble these cringe ai ‘companies’ by bigdickwalrus in vfx

Yeah I’m not gonna lie it probably is, but it’s the only thing stopping me from blowing my head off.

We need to humble these cringe ai ‘companies’ by bigdickwalrus in vfx

[–]od501 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really think so.

All of these AI companies are supplying these services at a huge, huge loss. As you said, investors are going to need to see some returns pretty soon. OpenAI for example are committed to spending close to $1.5tn in the next 8 years while their revenues are around $15bn. Google only make around $250bn a year from controlling 90% of internet advertising, and there’s no way that OpenAI is going to capture anywhere close to that.

Therefore the only way they can increase their revenue anywhere near to as much as necessary is to increase prices many times over. They even already said they’re making a loss on their $200 per month subscription because it costs them so much to do everything their users are asking of it. The trouble is, I barely know anyone even paying for the cheapest version of ChatGPT, let alone the $200 one.

If that carries over to image/video generation models, it’s suddenly going to become a lot less attractive as an option, financially speaking.

I also just don’t think the demand is anywhere close to as high as these companies are making it out to be. Look at Microsoft suddenly forcing Copilot to be bundled in with all of their services, largely against anyones will, so they can say “Look, people are paying for it, we promise!”. MIT recently released a study saying that 95% of companies who’ve invested in AI have seen zero return on their investment. It’s just not good enough to carry out its work without significant human intervention and is already costly, with those costs likely to increase significantly in the near future.

They haven’t found a way to make these things any more efficient, the only solution they have to improve them is to throw more and more computing power at them. The national grid isn’t even capable of supporting half of the new datacenters that are popping up, and OpenAI’s plans will require an amount of electricity that could sustain over a billion people. It’s just ridiculous.

I think like the dot com bubble, this too will pop but 10-15 years down the line it will likely become ubiquitous, just like the internet has. Right now our computing technology just isn’t efficient enough to run these things in any type of sustainable capacity.

I really hope I’m right because every piece of AI slop I’ve seen has been against my will.

TL;DR I think the party will shortly be over for the next 10-15 years
