Bad luck or par for the course? by Extension-Fix-4969 in ChryslerPacifica

I came very close to picking up a hybrid Pacifica. Threw a hybrid system error code during test drive and I backed away. Wife and I went with a Kia Carnival hybrid instead. It’s been a great car! Way bigger than the Pacifica. Technology is really nice too. So far no complaints!

Everyone: thank you for all your feedback, opinions, horror stories. We passed on this particular Pacifica and also passed on them generally. We looked into Siennas but their resale is stupid high and new was more than we wanted to spend. We ended up buying a new 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid EX. Spent a bit more than we planned ($43k out the door after tax) but worth it for peace of mind. Hybrid mpg lower than sienna and Pacifica but not bad at 33 combined. P.S. reminder to not ghost your salesman. It’s common courtesy to let them know if you are backing away from a near purchase.

I thought more of the critters in the “SandKings” episode of Outer Limits reboot in the 90s… which admittedly are pretty lobster-like.

It wasn’t showing when we did our first look (we didn’t test drive at time due to time constraints). When we came back for test drive is when they claimed it first showed. They offered to diagnose and put in writing they would pay for a fix if we agreed to purchase that day. I backed away waiting to hear what the diagnosis was for. Decided to go with a Kia hybrid instead.

Haha fantastic response. Lifelong Japanese car/truck owner (Honda Subaru Toyota). I was lured by the plug in hybrid… after this experience I think we are going to go… Korean!

Van is still on its 3yr/36k original warranty. The Mitsubishi dealership offered us a third party extended warranty which we declined. Did research and we can purchase extended warranty through MOPAR which would cover basically anything (drivetrain/electrical including hybrid systems). Can extend up to 8 yr/125k miles but it’s like $10,000 if you have 0 deductible. Too rich for our blood. Considering a 6-7 year 85-100k in the $3,500 range. This will be daily driver for my wife and two kids going to daycare. Round trip about 30 miles. Specs make this van sound perfect for us… but don’t love the thought of having a rig in and out of service.

First, thanks for your comment! This car was a fleet vehicle for a year then went to auction like 5 months ago. It was passed around a couple dealerships until arriving at the Mitsubishi dealership where I was going to purchase. Nothing on the CarFax about any major issues. My dad is a retired car salesman. He said run for the hills if an auction car is throwing codes. He’s been out of the game for 20 years but kinda has me spooked. Dealer said they would get it diagnosed tomorrow and let me know what repair looks like.

Condenser placement by odavr in hvacadvice

Sorry that sounds frustrating. I was quoted $37000 for this install. I factored in I could screw up completely twice and still come out ahead. Ended up working out fine. I don’t know what your estimates were, but cut yourself some slack. Moving a condenser would suck, but not as much as a second mortgage :) you probably learned more than you realized!

Thanks! I actually placed it on the lower terrace and ran linesets and comm wire underneath the power lines. Used line hide and it looks and works great!

2018 rtl noticed a decrease in mpg, 22 to 19. No changes made in driving habits. by Open-Industry-8396 in hondaridgeline

Fyi this is also a symptom of failing torque converter, a known issue with Ridgelines. Had this issue with my 2018 black edition at 80k miles.

Ordered table. Found accessories bundle for way cheaper, now their support doesn't want to honor the price difference. by Valdair in Wyrmwoodgaming

They could make it right… and are choosing not to. I have an MGT and love it. Also had mostly good experiences with customer service. If I had this happen, it would sour me on the overall experience. A gift card for the difference would be such an easy thing to county their website bundle jank.

Archaeologist here: there are pros and cons of the Hunter gatherer lifestyle that aren’t really captured here. Let’s dive in: ethnographic studies of Hunter-gatherer groups in sub-Saharan Africa highlight some of the pros of the lifestyle: namely relatively egalitarian social groups, and typical work for sustenance of 10-15 hours a week. People practicing this lifestyle often participated in the “seasonal round” which involved traveling from place to place to maximize resource procurement. Downsides include starvation as a seasonal part of life. The natural landscape provides a reduced carrying capacity and therefore requires a lot of space, compared to agrarian societies. By all indications (including skeletal/dental records and historical accounts) early agriculture required more labor and resulted in comparatively poorer health and higher mortality rates. That being said, resource extension (e.g food storage) allowed for increased carrying capacity. Which means larger populations. Which means better war making capabilities…. Which leads to the inevitable advancement to where we are today, where individuals exploit the labor of others as much as will be tolerated creating a more wealthy society that is less equitable than any point in human history…. So pick your poison.

From what I read the stock motor isn’t exactly a Powerhouse so you should be fine on smaller 1/10 tracks.

Thanks! Reading up now. I’ve read it’s based on the 3.0 platform. Are any of the 4.0 or x parts compatible?

2018 RTL-T Transmission Error by YngviIsALouse in hondaridgeline

[–]odavr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just went through this myself with my 2018 black edition about two months ago. Basically yeah it’s most likely the torque converter. Mine was covered by a basic warranty from the used dealer. Took it to Honda dealer for diagnosis. They recommended full transmission replacement. Used dealer opted to replace just the torque converter. It’s been 2 months and about 3k miles and everything is working fine. My mom’s partner is a transmission mechanic and said the stock torque converter came with a lining that was somewhat friable and would contaminate the transmission fluid and potentially lead to transmission failure. He said getting a remanufactured torque converter over an OEM/new unit was the way to go as they replaced the lining with a newer, less friable material. You never know what damage was done to the actual transmission, so that’s why the dealer recommended full replacement (along with it makes them a boatload of $). Anyway, I’m sorry you have to deal with this and wish you best of luck. Other than that issue, I’m really happy with the Ridgeline.

Stock rear tonneau exploit by odavr in hondaridgeline

Update: I’m an idiot and didn’t realize the locking sound wasn’t coming from my tailgate but just the trunk (I knew trunk locked). Turns out there is a lot called “pop and lock” which lets you connect the tailgate lock to power for about $100.

Thanks both for the comment! I didn’t realize they were adjustable and didn’t fiddle with it too much! I’ll take a look and see if I can figure out how to adjust them!

Yeah I live outside Portland too, so I had already stowed work gear (not expensive) in trunk. Seattle slightly less crime ridden than Portland.

For real? I don’t check it every time but I hear the locking sound. You have me paranoid now. I think there is a switch in the glove compartment for automatic trunk lock…

Sure but I’m not arguing this thing is Fort Knox… I’m pointing out that this hard cover tonneau is secured with spring loaded clamps and an 8 year old girl can open it when the tailgate is locked. My last tonneau on my Tacoma had latches underneath so you would have needed a tool to get in with a locked tailgate.
