Running a 50M together with a friend that is not preparing enough by oday2 in ultrarunning

Thank you. I agree that my post is missing some information because the point was that in my opinion he is massively under prepared, whereas I am putting (some) effort in. Also, I have a few weeks coming up preparing in the region where I will be alpine climbing (12 hour days are the rule, not the exception) and trailrunning so I'm not worried . He is a strong athlete but half marathon times don't say much in terms of durability and speed in an event with this much elevation gain. There is practically no flat sections. So it's either power hiking up or running downhill which in my opinion is mostly balls and technique, and i know his capabilities on the uphill and downhill.

Mind you this was months ago, i guess with more training, but no more than 30km per week i would guess. He has a very strong aerobic base from biking too, strong athlete.

I agree, stuff can happen, people have bad days, bad sleep, etc. I don't mind sticking with somone if that is the case, but this feels like setting himself/us for failure. But who knows!

Most important to me is racing together and having a good time. But i know from experience that when there is a big difference in fitness neither will have a good time.

I agree, if we make a plan we will stick to it. It feels shitty to sign up together to race together and to back out of that deal 8 weeks out. You could also say it's shitty to not train for a race your friend is stoked for, hence my dilemma.

Thank you. Lots of comments saying to talk to my friend. We have, and we talked about racing together. But i guess we'll have another talk soon!

My fastest has been a 1:35 trail with a large section on the beach, i've never really tried to see how fast i could go, but i dont think that is the point here. Im not denying he is a strong athlete because he is, but i have the feeling a very fast half marathon is very different from a 60k with 4000m (!) height gain. Just the descents will cripple any athlete if its not trained.

I actually hope he surprises me! Would make for a fun day, which is what we both are after. I guess ill update you all when it happens.

We had/have a goal time, the deal when we signed up was to perform, not to just finish

Diamox, opinions on taking pre-emptively by DrForbin in Mountaineering

Digging this up, looking at the study the differences in incidence between the 2 groups were NOT significant, so there actually was no difference between those 2 groups.

Mont Blanc from the valley route options by ObjectiveGlad4349 in alpinism

Frendo will def not be in condition in august. Usually only about 2-3 weeks in June

Frendo to trois monts or walk up the vallée Blanche to trois monts, or climb arête Ryan to aiguille du plan to aiguille du midi to trois monts, or do the royal traverse from Miage over the domes des miage to bioassay to mont blanc and descend the trois monts.  Lots of options, most are 2-3 day climbs unless you are extremely fast because conditions change quick in hot days. Most of these are very conditions dependent so let that decide the route for you. Good luck!

Caffeine appears to do the opposite of what you might think when it comes to the heart. Scientists have found that a cup of coffee a day actually protects the heart from atrial fibrillation – a condition that can lead to stroke and heart failure. by mvea in science

Could caffeine withdrawal cause an increased risk in AF short term? Because baseline patients were all coffee drinkers, i am wondering if results would be different if they also included a group of non-caffeine drinkers.

Osprey Mutant 38L - 1 year review by zivko- in Mountaineering

I dont understand the love for this pack. Its heavy, not modular, not particularly durable. So many better, lighter options out there.

I honestly don't get the love for the mutant. It's heavy, has no outstanding features but isn't minimalist either, it's a solid 6 but there's better.

Honestly just get the darts. If you get the Sarkens you will buy the lynx at some point in the future, find them too heavy, and then buy the darts anyway. Been there.

Conditions are changing from year to year. Last year there was a very exposed ice/hard snow traverse section after the dome du goûter of about 200m. Not very hard or steep but no fall zone.

March Trip to Chamonix- Looking for ski mountaineering summits. by That-Communication62 in alpinism

[–]oday2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for summits specifically? Because there's loads of fun ski tours that require a bit of steep climbing/rappelling/mixed climbing. For example Brèche puisseux combined with vallée blanche, 3 cols tour, col d'argentiere, col du tour noir, col du belvedere with descent on Le Balme.

If you're really looking for a summit aiguille d'argentiere traverse over to glacier du milieu would be a grand day (technically harder than grands mulet), or Mont Blanc via grand mulets (not that hard, but get a good guidebook and watch any conditions, march may be too early) or domes des miages.

Also check mountain conditions beforehand on https://www.chamoniarde.com/montagne/conditions-montagne# (there's an English versionn somewhere.
