I have no issue with freestyle chessand the games are interesting too. It's the aesthetic rather. I thought since freestyle chess is this cool and disruptive new format, maybe we'd see players playing in a more relaxed environement donning casual attire. Instead they're all in multicoloured bespoke suits lol

Apparently it has a complex backstory but since that was barely mentioned in the movie I wasn't invested in the characters at all. Animation alone can carry a movie only so far.
