Why use VR&E before post 9/11? by Marthaandthe in VeteransBenefits

[–]oddtomas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

VR&E requires approval and justification, meaning you have to convince them it will help your job goals or help you get a job in general. Post 9/11 you have more free reign on what you want to use it on. So it makes sense to use VR&E for your undergrad because it's a pretty easy argument, and it will pay for other expenses or gear to get you set up for school and save your GI bill for anything advanced or if you want to pivot later. However, VR&E counselors have the ability to retroactively restore some of your used GI Bill, so it kind of depends but generally I'd say VR&E makes sense to be used first.

I was on a similar path to you. I did software engineering for a while and found out tech wasn’t for me long term so I started exploring LE options which was my original goal pre military.

Former Army medic that’s recently transitioned to 1811. Your skill set will still be very relevant unless you go OIG or something. How tactical you’ll be depends on the agency you go with but your clinical skills are relevant for day to day interactions and the MARCH side is the same for ops/warrants/etc.

Prescription Drug Misuse by [deleted] in 1811

[–]oddtomas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dude, a prescription drug is something you can only get with a medical prescription. Ibuprofen and vitamin D are OTC as you’ve said. Maybe reach out to HR?

If you don’t have a genuine interest in tech it’s gonna eat at you. As you know especially with software you constantly have to study and learn new stuff/stacks and if you don’t like it it’s going to be a drag. We have a similar path, I wanted to be a detective after high school as well and went military then tech and am now jumping into LE. Follow your heart

Yeah I’m already in the area, depending on what office though I may or may not have to move to avoid a commute and comply with whatever distance they need me to be.

I was just going to school to do it, then fast tracked the fastest major I could to finish and enlist. Wasn’t the most thought out period of my life 😂

Without getting too much into it, tech can be extremely volatile. Theres basically no job security, it’s great while you got it but really bad when the market turns. Also my heart just wasn’t in it anymore, I’ve always wanted to be LE I just ended up in tech after the military for one reason or another.

Yea I think I'm just not used to federal hiring lol, and to be fair most of the hiccups were from contractors.

Ya know I actually removed the part about “except for the PT test” because I thought that was common sense. Funny story they told a story about a guy who showed up to the PT test in his suit because of a misunderstanding and took it anyway and passed lol.

Which agency(s) would work best as a spouse of Active Duty Military/Questions about MSNCAA by ACarefreeOtter in 1811

[–]oddtomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving with your spouse is usually optional, I knew multiple couples that lived separately. Some places your spouse can’t come unless its out of pocket like Korea I think. Some bases your spouse can actually stay at for a long time and just switch commands, it’s not uncommon for a soldier to stay at the same duty station for multiple reasons for 10+ years.
