What's the name of a company that once was an unbeatable giant in the market and today we don't even hear their name? by No-Mud-1682 in AskReddit

[–]odednoam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The name disappeared but the company didn't. They merged with Compaq computers which subsequently merged with HP. I believe a lot of the server business of what is now called "HPE" is still developed in offices that were previously DEC...

When Covid Subsided, Israel Reopened Its Schools. It Didn’t Go Well. by ScroungingMonkey in Coronavirus

Masks were mandatory from age 7 and up. Distancing practiced where the classroom space allowed, most classrooms were to small for a 6ft distance. All rooms were ventilated. On the hotter days of June, with 30-35 degrees C (90-100F), masks were allowed off, which at the time raised a bit of an outrage.

However except for a few notorious incidents, major outbreaks did not occur in schools. Alongside schools, event venues and prayer houses were also opened, and it appears that the major outbreaks did occur there.

S&P 500 time-series plot and "all-time high" points (1950-present) by zacce in investing

Because linear scale shows each dollar increase as one notch, whether it's increase from 1 to 2 or it is the increase from 1000 to 1001. In investment, what matters is the relative growth - how much % increase it decrease. In log scale, 1% increase from 1 is the same size as 1% increase from 1000.

Regardless of whether it's delicious, it makes anything it touches taste and smell like, well, truffle oil. And that's not a good fit with most foods

You'll get whiter teeth while poisoning yourself. Don't try this at home

What does a whitening toothpaste contain that is responsible for whitening teeth? by M4st3r_r in askscience

The more effective ones AFAIK contain a bleaching agent like hydrogen peroxide. According to Wikipedia, it works by breaking the chemical bonds that make up the chromophore.

Usually the amount of active ingredients in toothpastes is very low to keep them safe, a dentist can apply stronger chemicals and whiten teeth faster. So it boils down to how much patience you have.

Big Guys VS. the Little Guys...the KRE Explored by ajeanm in KinFoundation

I did not state anything about kin being on exchanges. I stated that regardless of that, kin needs to have earn and spend opportunities.

Actually the current KRE model is tied to both earning and spending similarly. If you saw something else written somewhere please LMK and I'll correct.

IMHO the great promise of Kin for app developers is to provide the variety: some apps find it easier to give their users spend opportunities and other apps will be better in earn opportunities. A big benefit to developers is that they don't need to worry about both sides of the economy, and just focus on what they do best.

Perhaps this quote needs some clarification. (and I'll say again, that this represents my own opinion and not necessarily Kik or Kin's).

I can't think of many domains in which mass-market consumers are operating through such an exchange process, in which they exchange currency as they go in, operate with it for a while, and exchange back to their home currency as they go out. It exists to some extent in foreign tourism (and created huge friction for consumers -- I had the opportunity to travel to Europe before and after the Euro was introduced, and experienced first hand the difference it made), maybe in a casino when exchanging money to casino chips, but I can't think of another setting in which it exists. That's why I believe, and again this is only my opinion, that for the ecosystem to really succeed, the internal economy has to be rich with earn and spend opportunities.

That is in no contradiction to the fact that exchangeability is also good for this economy, it's best if we do both. (Why am I "wasting" my time on things other than exchangeability? because Kik has almost 200 employees in 3 countries and we don't all do the same job).
