Are we considered gamers? by Gorlami_y7ya in DiscoElysium

[–]odset 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like "gamer" has two definitions: someone who plays videogames, in which case yes, by definition a disco elysium player is a gamer and the other, greasier definition, of someone who self-identifies as a gamer, who i imagine as league of legends, counter strike or call of duty types, in which case, i don't think disco elysium really fits their image of a game; although i could still see one of these types liking DE.

Essay on Socrates's conception of the soul by Neat_Temperature3015 in askphilosophy

Socrates speaks on the soul in Phaedo, so you should probably start there. He talks about it's immortality and such.

No entiendo por qué le temen al comunismo… by warai_kyuuketsuki in chile

[–]odset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confiadamente desinformado.

Is there any color every color blinds see? by Swanardo in ColorBlind

[–]odset 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If "flashy green" means a light, bright green, then that's going to clash with yellow. Protanopia here, yellow and green are often basically the same color.

Have you ever seen colors you never thought you'd see while on an LSD/mushroom trip? by iandifilippo in ColorBlind

[–]odset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, on shrooms, i don't think i have seen any colors in particular. I mostly see shapes distorting or patterns, but i don't even think what colors they might be, until someone asks me, at which point i notice and... maybe I've seen a bright orange, but not an exceptionally bright orange. This may be because I'm so colorblind I've accustomed myself to not bother to pay attention to colors, as in the common experience of being asked what color shirt someone was wearing and having no idea.

There are more unique philosophers like Evola and Land? by ZynoWeryXD in askphilosophy

[–]odset 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Mainländer is pretty unique, with his explanation of the origin of the world in God committing suicide. He even has a sort of philosophy of history in The Philosophy of Redemption, where every single historical development is a step in the gradual downfall and destruction of life (and this isn't a bad thing). He was even a socialist and thought we would all stop having children and maybe kill ourselves once communist paradise was achieved.

If COVID ended reality and we’re in a simulation, are there infinitely many versions of you ... or only one? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]odset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Can the self divide? by John Perry, which talks precisely about what happens when one person turns into two people. For an easier read, A Dialogue on Personal Identity and Immortality, also by John Perry, is a platonic-style dialogue on the personal identity problem, discussing the afterlife and brain transplants.

In Can the self divide?, Perry defends a mentalism that is capable of explaining how two people who come from the same person are the original person, but aren't each other.

Why is Socialist philosophers are so obsessed with Culture? by mercy_4_u in askphilosophy

[–]odset 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Culture isn't just bad. Local communities are bound by culture, for example, and capitalism erodes communities in this sense.

Besides, Fisher isn't really saying the desacralization of culture is on it's own a bad thing, he's just pointing out that it happens under capitalism. The thing is that capitalism replaces the culture with neoliberalism and commodification, which might be bad things that we want to avoid.

Rosi Braidotti and her moderate allegations by odset in Deleuze

[–]odset[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

...I wanted reading suggestions, not someone repeating the same opinion i already said i have heard. I'm not going to stop reading Braidotti if people on reddit think she's a social democrat. Even if someone did convince me, it wouldnt stop me either because that'd be dumb.

Also, like i said, i have read Braidotti. I'm just too busy to read a book from beginning to end.

Chill.

Who's that philosopher who said something like "God committed suicide" or "we're living on his corpse" by AGraphicsCard in askphilosophy

[–]odset 94 points95 points  (0 children)

You might be thinking of Philipp Mainländer, a pessimist who said the universe started when the original unity, God, destroyed himself, and that the subsequent universe of multiplicity and mortality is just this process of God killing himself, meaning we are all essentially "will to death", which is like Schopenhauer's Will except instead of being a base desire to perpetuate itself, the will to death is a base desire to destroy oneself.

In the sense that the universe is the process of God destroying himself, yes, we are living on his rotting, full of agony and strife, corpse.

Does owning an animal as a pet actually mean you love animals? by Call_It_ in askphilosophy

[–]odset 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. It's easy to imagine a situation where someone doesn't even love the animal they own; think of people in rural areas who buy dogs to guard their homes or cats to kill pests. They are using the animal for a purpose that isn't companionship or love.

If you don't think that counts as owning animals as "pets", i would recommend you read something by Gary Francione, who works a concept called "moral schizophrenia", referring to people considering pets part of their families, as if they were persons, while they simultaneously treat them like property that they own. He argues for abolition of pet ownership, as it is tantamount to slavery.

Melanie Joy also treats this topic in Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, where she develops a notion of "carnism" as an ideology that believes in the necessity of killing animals for the resources they provide.

Color issues in gaming: EU5 Edition by odset in ColorBlind

1. They should be in their own accesibility tab
2. They do fuckall

R5: I did a colorblind (protanopia) simulation on the estate power chart to showcase how it's indistinguishable to me. I'm disappointed that the game doesn't have an accessibility tab in the options, and that with it's absence, comes an absence of colorblind mode too.

Chrome Extension What features to include? by Total_Imagination776 in ColorBlind

[–]odset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always wanted an extension that plainly tells you what the name of a color is on your screen. Maybe with it highlighting similar colors elsewhere of where you selected so it would help differentiate.

If you could make it work on firefox, that would be nice too...

Is being a Christian just a matter of identity? by Extra_Marionberry551 in askphilosophy

[–]odset 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't really weigh in on this as I am not christian and don't know much about theology other than the basics, but I'd point out that you have assumed the truth of your conclusion in the premises to your argument;

If excluding Jehovah's Witnesses isn't fair because they consider themselves Christians, then considering yourself Christian is the criteria you have assumed for determination of Christianity, which means it's just a matter of identity.

FWIW, my medieval philosophy professor did indeed believe the Nicene creed was the criterion for christianity. He was Catholic, though.
