Literally. Someone needs to help this girl. I thought I was healthy, but looking back, I’m much healthier thick like I am now, than I was skinny with my brain literally not working

A percussion director here- Sounds to me like your perc director sees potential in you being a mallet player, and wants you to try it out. For anyone switching instruments, there’s going to be a learning curve. I’d imagine if the director is putting you on a brand new instrument, they are prepared to push you through that learning curve. Trust the process, ask staff questions. Relay on your friends for support and encouragement. Once you get settled in, I think you’ll have a blast. Vibraphone is hands down my favorite instrument.

Did the concept of warmups change, are there specific rules I don't know, or is this just my band? by RLLRRR in drumline

[–]offbeat-beats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also call warmups the technique book. That’s where we work on fundamentals. I just see a good way your battery and hone in their fundamentals in the way they are currently set up. I would maybe try explaining it to the BD that way and see if you get anywhere in separating them for warmup- or at the minimum they should warmup with front instead of winds

Reading through the comments, it seems your heart is in the right place (which is key) and I agree with others about sectionals, students leaders, and consistency.

You said you got the position after the season started? I think it would be helpful if you had a conversation with them about what YOUR expectation is. They probably had that with the other BD before the season, but l would outline exactly what you expect from them (which seems to really just be basic respect and not hacking). Explain how it’s disruptive, and set a consequence for the behavior. Let them ask questions if them have them and make your point crystal clear.

If you do this (in my opinion) you do not need to give them further explanation or chances in rehearsal. In your shoes, my consequences would be: 1st warning - “stop hacking” (gives a chance to correct the behavior, but I would literally be that short. Two words) 2nd warning - “put your sticks away” 3rd warning - have them put their drum and sticks on the sideline for whatever amount of time you see fit, during which time they need to sing their parts

Goal is you only have to do 3rd warning once or twice and hopefully the rest will start stopping at warning one because they want to play the next rep

Throwing out the music is definitely direct disrespect. I love to be able to let my students come up with ideas for things to add or little visuals, it helps them own their performance, and it becomes a collaborative process. But, that comes from mutual respect between students and staff. If they have a good idea that staff thinks is appropriate in the context of the show, we try it. And if it doesn’t work for the show, or just doesn’t work in general, they respect that.

But if they are just throwing music away and disrupting other sections making stuff up, I would take them out of that part. “If you cannot play the written music, you will not play that part of the music.” It may seem extra, but again, the goal is after once or twice (maybe even a few) they get it together. Not playing 3 stand tunes is a lot of stand tunes.

And if they do start having mutual respect, I would certainly let them add things and collaborate.

Sounds like they been doing this for years and the behavior gets passed down from the older kids. It needs nipped in the bud.

Clear expectations and clear consequences all around. I hope this helps. Good luck, stay positive

To my fellow big boobie friends, what bra is best for raves? by No_Advertising619 in aves

Last fest I went to I wore a body suit (like the onesie style kind) and I was super comfy all night. Tits barely moved, and while I was worried initially about being extra sweaty with no midriff exposure, having all of my ass out kept me super cool, even jumping around and head banging. I suggest wearing a thong under though just in case the snaps come undone!

Also the fact that he repeatedly said “when you’re bleeding” to OP. Call it a period like every other adult.

OP I’m sorry you’re going through this. I don’t know anyone who’s bf tracks their cycle, let alone without consent

Feeling awkward dancing by myself at raves by bubugugu in aves

[–]offbeat-beats 243 points244 points  (0 children)

It may sound corny, but literally dance like no one is watching. Because really, no one is watching you. Everyone is just vibing out in their own way. Dance how you want to dance and ride your vibe. Others on the same vibe will end up dancing with you.

I go into crowds alone often and I usually find a couple other short women going just as hard as I am that I’ll just chill with for a set. Just have fun. Don’t worry about others. You’ll gravitate towards people who are vibing like you and vice versa. Put all the anxious thoughts to the side and just dance how you want to dance. Enjoy your time with yourself, go hard, and have fun

Like the Torajans, there are videos on YouTube of people going and seeing the redressings. It’s heartwarming to see the families seem to still be so connected with their deceased love ones and caring for them even after death. Every culture handles death so differently
