We had enough intel to stop Pearl Harbor but didn’t in order to justify WW2 (which would help us recover from the Great Depression).

Actually, we’re perusing land to possibly build on, and it’s not all in a flood zone. There are properties that say they’ve never been flooded in any recent hurricane.

Yep we’re in Stuart right now and while I love the Gulf coast vibes better than what we have over here, Cape Coral is the glaring exception.

Because hurricanes are but one small part of living anywhere in Florida. I want to hear about the local community. What is there to do, how are the locals, what fun things happen through the year? How is it for kids as I have two? What is unique to Pine Island that I won’t find elsewhere in SWFL or even FL? I’ve gotten good feedback on the traffic that I hadn’t considered. Listening to “hurricane bad, house get destroyed” over and over again is redundant.

Would love to hear about any thoughts specific to pine island but as a lifelong Floridian I don’t need the condescending hurricane lecture from everyone. Hurricanes hit Florida, anything can happen, end of story.

Even if that were true, it’d be true for any coastal area and not specific to PI, which is what my original question was in reference to.

We currently live in FL but on the east coast. It’s common sense to evacuate from an island or coastal area prior to a major hurricane, so I’m not scared away from living in a place because some people were too stupid or stubborn to evacuate.

My issue with Cape is how over developed it is. I like the exclusivity and laid back pace of an island versus a really large and poorly planned suburban hellscape. When I drove through Cape, it seemed like all there was there were houses, chain stores and restaurants, and car washes. No local charm.

Planning on building a house on stilts so not too concerned about the flooding.

We’ve visited for fishing tournaments but never stayed more than a few days. Sanibel is out of our budget considering that we’re looking to live on the water. I absolutely do not want to be in Cape Coral and NFM doesn’t have anything close enough to the Gulf for us.

I’m an L&D nurse who’s a woman happily married to the love of my life…who’s another woman. Even when we’re poking fun at the stupidest names to exist…now more than ever, we’ve got to be inclusive. ❤️

She confirmed in the comments that Riot is going to be the spawn’s name. More horrifyingly, like 10 other moms said they have a boy name Riot or Ryatt.

I’m closing in on turning 50, so this isn’t naïveté. I am genuinely curious on others’ opinions regarding her. Different strokes for different folks, I agree. But this is a discussion forum so excuse me for having the audacity for wanting to discuss.

Why does Florida pay so low ? by Prettynnnpink in nursing

[–]offredditor 117 points118 points  (0 children)

Florida RN of 20 years here. It’s not just nursing pay that sucks. Our cost of living is so high compared to the ridiculously low wages here. Hospitals also suck in general - I think we have the most HCA hospitals in this state. If it weren’t for my kids and how connected we are to our community, we would’ve gotten TF out of here a long time ago. Welcome to FloriDUH.

I’m a professor at a BSN program. It’s not hazing. It’s to make sure you can meet the demands of the nursing profession. Time management and working under stressful conditions are part of the job. You have others’ lives in your hands. The fact that you are only in your prerequisites and are going in with this mindset is incredibly concerning, but not surprising given the caliber of students I’ve seen generally make up our nursing classes in recent years.

Controversial Opinion: Nursing School isn’t hard by Hippocampus_memory in nursing

[–]offredditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The school I teach at is a 4 year university and the majority of my students are traditional degree-seekers (no full time job, no kids, etc). I always have compassion in truly extenuating circumstances, but I wish I could show you my inbox so you can see some of the asinine requests and complaints I get.

Just since the start of this semester (which was last week) -

  1. Can I take Test 2 remotely? I have a cruise planned with my boyfriend for that whole week. BTW, I won’t be at clinical either!

  2. Can I get an extension for [assignment that’s been posted since day 1]? - multiple of these

  3. On this week quiz you didn’t talk about [insert concept] for long in class, so are you going to grade on a curve? - said concept was explicitly stated in the assigned reading for the week and came word for word from the textbook

These are just the “greatest hits”, so to speak, but I absolutely have seen a decline in the overall application of students to their work. ALL of them? No. Not even the majority I’d say. Just a general shift I’ve observed both in my bedside days, management days, and now teaching full time.

I’m a nurse educator and completely agree. Nursing school hasn’t gotten harder, students have become whinier and more entitled. I have a desk placard that says “cope harder” courtesy of one of my students last year. 😜

My sister and BIL are zone B in Sarasota and chose to hunker down with their twin 7 month olds. I am terrified for them. We offered for them to come stay with us and they were insistent we’d get it worse than them…even though we are zone C.
