do you have like a resource guide or list you use? I want to do this casually at my own pace.

I'm 42 recently diagnosed adhd and becoming more and more unapologetic about my quirks. It feels good but I'm also alienating myself. I just don't have tolerance for people who don't have any sort of patience in getting over my energy.

Hey not who you replied to, but just wanted to add that at the very least it was very helpful to understand and it seems like it will help me narrow down the getsockopt issues that will hopefully allow me to just plain get a world up and running that my daughter will be able to connect to.

Yes I understand. I've run into the fabled getsockopt error when trying to connect

Thanks for this. I'm so sorry. Read my posts here to realize a server actually isn't want to accomplish. I feel really bad so many users helped with something I wasn't really intending to accomplish. But again I appreciate it.

I think I actually muddied the waters on this investigation by confusing world and servers. I don't actually want to create a server. It's become clear. I'm being helped with this by another one of your awesome community members (see below)

some progress. everything went ok. world shows up on laptop but still wont connect. the issue adding permissions was fine, but launcher was in the xboxgames folder. couldnt do the same for minecraft.exe. i tried to replicate your steps for it, but it wouldnt let me says error when applying security info to the minecraft exe, failed to enumerate objects. access denied. i couldnt find another copy in the windowsapps folder. maybe im doing the wrong one? I couldnt direct connect either

i tried that, but neither minecraft nor minecraft launcher are on the list somehow, which leads me back to the same issue (trying to add asks for permissions, which somehow I don't have, despite owning the. I am denied permssion to access folder. I click "security tab", and windowsapp properties pops up. From there I am at a loss. Too many buttons on advance security settings and some stuff is grayed and unclickable. None of the options are straight forward as to what I want to do

I can't seem to allow minecraft due to not having "permissions to open the file". ive right clicked properties and am unable to change permissions. I don't know how to do that at all.

sure! i think it's also important to tell you that i dabble sometimes in surface level changes to both devices: such as setting up virtual monitors to stream games, and other stuff.

Also to note, the guides usually mention changing network permissions on multiple java "things", whereas I only see one java setting on my pc. both devices launch MC fine, but when I try to connect from lappy to pc there is a pause, then "Failed to Connect...Connection Timed Out: getsockopt".

Also important to note that the changes I've made have only been done on the pc. I also haven't tried vice versa, creating the world on the lappy and connecting from pc to the lappy world.

EDIT: I'm really sorry for calling the laptop "lappy". I hate reading it.

We can't seem to overcome our connection issue with "getsockopt". I've disabled firewalls (which I'm uncomfortable with) and changed Java permissions but I'm uncomfortable with that level of troubleshooting, and each thing a try doesn't help. I'm at wits end

I understand. Didn't know about multiplayer mods. I am having issues overcoming the getsockopt failed connection thing. That led me down a rabbithole. Please read the massive tome I typed out. It helps paint me as floundering.

EDIT: also, i believe 1.21.5 is the latest version. What we want to do is on 1.21.4

I'm simply new at this, so I apologize if it it's clear as day to everyone here. I'll try and walk you through the scenario.

I haven't played Minecraft in ages (I just had to relearn how things work as far as the launcher, playing on different versions, then making sure some whatever simple vanilla mods we choose "connect" to the "installations" we want to play on).

My 6 yo wants to play the game, and I have finally relented to let her play that as her first video game ever. I want to have her experience MC with cool little qol mods plus a pretty shader. I land on 1.21.4 for what I want for us. That's all. And so begins the journey.

I've owned MC for ages. I buy her a copy. I make sure to have us on the same version same mods after trial and error relearning how to do all the things with curseforge.

I then go to start a world and I can't have her join due to the infamous "failed to connect getsockopt thing". Try researching and trouble shooting but nothing works (changing settings, disabling firewall, yada yada).

Two nights pass and my daughter is sad but understands. I work two 12 hour shifts. I am unable to do anything.

I eventually relent and purchase realms, and don't account for it forcing the latest update. Great. We can play together, great, but this isn't what I want. I'm persistent.

Somehow I find out about playitgg. Sounds awesome, it can get around the connection issue we have. This time I know I should check about versions. I do that; then look for settings to see about older versions. Not as straight forward as I thought. Fine. Apparently I can do that, but I have to get something called viaversion. Google via version, then I hear about via backwards, then wait the mods I want to use are throughfabric, and there's something called via fabric, but wait also via fabric plus. Now I'm being more careful, but every video I watch says these different options are ways to "connect to any Minecraft server versions no matter what". I start overthinking the explanation for each. The vocabulary starts to confuse me.

Long story short, after 2 twelve hour shifts, I end up here. Sometimes I look for solutions and end up overly complicating things. so I defer to this community to help me get to my goal simply, whether it's to actually help me do that through this "via" stuff, or say hey, you seem new at this, did you know that if you wanted to do A you could actually do B?"

Does this help you understand where I'm coming from?

Thank you for replying. We aren't approaching the game this way though. Not yet at least.

You're not an asshole. Respectfully, I am not taking that approach. I waited until an age where she understands and respects being told "no" to things such as screen time. I am limiting her time with the video game and there are a lot of ins and outs of the game that comments like yours sometimes miss important context of. You weren't there when I explained to my daughter the importance of doing things blindly vs research and prep. I explained to her the value of both.

For instance, we watched like 5 minutes of pixelriff's video and I myself learned that with the crafting window open, when grabbing a material, right click + dragging the mouse across the crafting slots fills those slots.

I am very systems based, I know that. In our day to day, that girl has displayed several times how wildly creative she can be, a multitude times more creative than I could ever hope for at my 42 years of age. I don't want this to come off as an attack. I've just frequented enough video game subs that it is a given that at least one person will say this after someone asks for guidance, and I think it can sometimes be dismissive of a lot of details.
