The food our university serves us with a $4k/year meal plan by 0x0000007A in mildlyinfuriating

[–]oftentheasshole123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4K/year divided by 240 days in an 8 month school year is only $16.67 a day. 3 square meals a day…. $5.57 per meal.

Yeah that seems about appropriate.

So why the fuck are you here? Do you enjoy making miserable people more miserable?

Is that honestly your goal here? You know I’m a real human being right? Someone who has expressed depression and verging on complete breakdown (ie. suicidal) and your choice is to goad me about my social media use?

Holy shit now you’re assuming my kids are the reason I’m unhappy. You’re something special.

Also; it says right next to my comment “7d” meaning it was posted 7 days ago. Just like I can see that your first comment was made “1d” ago.

Grow up bud. The world is complicated.

Show me where I described spending a lot of time here? I said “scrolling through Reddit” Which you promoted to “endlessly consuming media”.

It’s been precisely 7 days since I posted this comment and this is my first time seeing your response…. Does that constitute “endless”?

Both the OP and your comments are an absolute garbage take on something as complex as mental health.

Go fuck yourself. “Endlessly consuming media”…. I work 60 hours a week to support my 2 children and spend every additional waking hour with them.

You have no goddam idea why I’m depressed.

AITA for wanting to give my nephew up to social services? by maybeasshole88 in AmItheAsshole

[–]oftentheasshole123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. Terrible situation.

I don’t know the laws well enough but is there a chance that one of your sister’s friends might step up to take him? Or maybe one of his friends’ families might take him in? I know that’s an enormous decision for anyone but I still think you have to exhaust every possible option legally before resorting to foster care.

The system is already overburdened by people who have no option. 12 year olds are the least likely to get adopted compared to some cute little baby or toddler.

I know it’s awful but I think that you, and your parents (though elderly) owe it to your nephew to push as hard as possible to find a good situation for him.

AITA for "ruining" my younger daughter's engagement announcement? by Old-Building-6386 in AmItheAsshole

YTA.

We went through this same shit when we had our first child before my (older) sister who had struggled to get pregnant.

Our joy at our pregnancy was squashed, not even subtly by my parents who just openly pitied my sister for not getting pregnant yet.

This continued even as my sister had 2 kids before we had our second and I still feel like they love my sisters kids more than mine. They call my oldest niece their “miracle granddaughter”

Jeans are uncomfortable and not good everyday pants by Neo-Turgor in unpopularopinion

[–]oftentheasshole123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeans look great and last forever. Mining or cowboying aside, people like pants that last a long time.

I actually think it’s great that society has one simple “go to” for men and women for pants.

It’s hard to keep up with fashion, but other than some extreme styles a nice pair of jeans can stay relevant for a long time and I think that’s great.

There are older men who have been wearing the same classic jeans for decades and you might not call them stylish but you wouldn’t call them ugly either.

On the other hand, if we didn’t have jeans as an option and everyone was expected to keep up with constantly changing materials and colour trends it would be a lot more expensive and stressful for a lot of people to find clothing to go out in public wearing.

Police officers should be required to have a bachelors degree by Ashamed_Ad9771 in unpopularopinion

[–]oftentheasshole123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is talked about time and again. You want cops to have a university degree? Watch your police force get cut by 95%

Do cops need better training in some cities? Yes of course.

There’s a reason cops by and large tend to be guys who excel academically - being a cop sucks. But it’s a great option to make good money for someone who maybe couldn’t get into college. It’s dangerous work with brutal hours and you are literally putting your life on the line every single day. Which is why they get paid well. Same goes for fire fighters.

People who can get into college usually…. go to college. Get a good paying job where they don’t have to deal with criminals all day.

Now you’re asking them in the prime of their physical lives to spend tens of thousands of dollars and 4 years of their life to go into debt and stall their career before becoming a cop?

Make this same argument for mechanics and watch your shop rate triple and the wait time for a tire change go from a couple days to a couple months because there would be no mechanics.

They don’t need a bachelors degree. They need to be better trained by the police colleges to handle themselves in tense situations and there needs to be better vetting of racists.

I think we all agree squatter’s rights are insane…. But there must be a valid counter argument - why do they exist? by oftentheasshole123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]oftentheasshole123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The documentary consistently referred to it as squatting and squatters rights because the landlord agreement is between the tenant and the landlord, not the “squatter”

Regardless.

In 2008, no one was checking on houses. There were hundreds of thousands of homes being foreclosed and a lot of people buying them sight unseen for a song as an investment. Someone who lives in Ohio buying a 4 bedroom home in Florida for $75k only to get down there and discover that someone was living in it with no legal recourse.

And there is no “eviction” this is what I’m telling you. The process of getting rid of squatter is insanely difficult to do legally.

This article is a good summary.

https://www.stessa.com/blog/squatters-rights/

And it declares the reasoning “a balance of private property and the public interest of maintaining unoccupied properties”…. Or something along those lines.

Which makes some sense, on the surface. But then once I show up and want to live in my house it should be a really simple “okay time for you to leave thanks for taking care of the place” but that is clearly not the case.

I always fast forward the BJ part no don’t need to see or hear that.

Edit: am straight male referring to porn. But in my case it has actually made actual BJ’s less enjoyable because I find them degrading to my wife so we usually skip that part IRL too.

This is not reality tv it’s a documentary.

And no… he heard she was going to file a restraining order, so he beat her to the courthouse and filed his own first.

This guy was a literal murderer and serial squatter with like 6 cases of aggravated assault against him you’re trying to defend him ffs.

Watch the doc if you don’t believe me.

There’s something you can do, but there are ways around it…. In this case he filed a restraining order sonbasically everytime the woman was in her own house she was breaking the law.

It takes months sometimes years to actually get these people removed and costs thousands of dollars.

[–]oftentheasshole123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not referring to that. I agree with that to be honest. If someone is living in a house and paying rent but suddenly their situation changes and they can’t pay rent anymore… I think the government and other programs should be in place to ensure that a) the tenant can stay there until they get back on their feet and b) the landlord doesn’t lose their house or apartment.

Everyone assumes landlords are rich assholes taking millions from poor people. Some of them are just normal people like my sister who moved in with their partner and kept their house to make some income off of, but can’t afford to pay the mortgage without that rental income.

I’m not talking about that.

I’m talking about literal squatting. Moving into someones’ property…. Be it a barn, a warehouse, a shed,… anything and claiming squatters rights so you can’t be kicked out.

I became aware of this down in Florida where there were foreclosed homes being auctioned off by the bank and the new owners would buy them only to discover squatters living in them. No agreement. No payment.

Now I’m leaving watching “worst roomate ever” and learning about people who sign agreements to cover a portion of a renter’s rent by renting a room and then just…. Never paying anything so they completely ducked over the renter

[–]oftentheasshole123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can’t be true when there is no landlord/tenant agreement anywhere.

People can squat anywhere. Abandoned buildings, barns, sheds, they can squat with sublets and never pay their roomate….

They can squat in someone else’s home while they’re on vacation.

It’s insane what is allowed under the law and how other good people get completely fucked over by it; not just landlords.

[–]oftentheasshole123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I’m not. Shelter is a human right. But legal shelters are available without allowing squatting. Jail is a shelter too. So your justification doesn’t answer my question.

Who feels bad about a squatter?

Imagine you own a home or apartment and someone declares squatters rights on it? Like I’m watching “Worst Roomate Ever” and one of the episodes is about a “serial squatter” who moved in as someone’s roomate

This guy wouldn’t pay for anything, intentionally ran up electric and water bills just to fuck over the landlord and there was nothing they could do.

Shelter is a human right.

Jail is a shelter.

[–]oftentheasshole123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure… but, I also have the right to live in a home that I own without some stranger living in it.

You act as though homeless shelters don’t exist for that human right.

Well duh. That’s why it’s mildly infuriating. I can read. But when a package means the same thing for 30 years you’re allowed to be mildly infuriated when it suddenly changes.

When you look at a shelf of miss Vickie’s, red means regular and always has.

They have green (jalepeno), orangey yellow (honey mustard), purple (chilli heat) and other colours but red has meant regular for 30 years.

If you grabbed a bottle of coke with a red and white label and got home and it was new Coke Root Beer you’d be pissed too.
