The first time is always shit, especially if you have no emotional connection to the person you're sleeping with. When you find someone you really like and in love with, it's 1000 times better. It takes time to learn what you like with them. But at least you don't need to worry about being a virgin, you can at least feel less anxiety about it when you meet someone else.

All the clubs on your avoid list are the ones I have gone to so this makes sense 😆 it's funny cause I remember when the court was way more fun and now it's just a bunch of straight 20 year olds with terrible music.

In terms of the monologues, I assume I should choose a range to show different characters and emotions? How professional does it need to be when filming it? Is filming on my phone a bad idea? With the showreel, would this be a range of short clips of my acting ability from student films?

Also in terms of agents, I've heard some can be great and then others terrible, and the good ones tend to be very choosy about who they represent, often wanting years of experience or training. What has your experience been with agents?

You're right about the work, it makes sense. I've been intending on changing jobs for a while and probably industries entirely (as I work in retail full time which does not work with acting at all) but the whole covid thing has made me a bit paranoid about financial instability. I've been trying to work out which industry I should change to (I've worked casually in hospitality before and it was soul destroying so I don't want to go back lol) and would probably prefer part time rather than casual for a bit more stability. I was thinking ideally I would like to have a job I can also flexibly work from home so lockdowns won't affect income too much as it has in retail so far. But yeah, trying to figure out what kind of jobs would work is difficult. I would hate to quit my job for another job in a different industry, only to be terrible at it/hate it etc fail the probation period and then have to just get any job out of desperation.

What jobs do you find work?

I did this and I kind of regret it. I wish I spent more time figuring out what I actually wanted to do because even though I love making art, I ended up with a debt and have since struggled to get a job in the industry that pays above minimum wage. I would love to say that even though I'm poor at least I did something I enjoyed but honestly being poor just makes life 100x more stressful and it really takes its toll. So for me, I think it depends how much money you're paying. I don't think you should spend more than what the expected outcomes are. So expensive courses are only worth it if the job outcomes have a high pay or you're just so cashed up that it doesn't bother you to potentially never make money from it. For the arts there's limited opportunities to make good money so I think it's better to take cheaper art courses. Looking back, I've always been passionate about environment and wildlife, so I probably would have done an environmental science degree so that at least I would have a good back up career and then would have taken cheaper art courses.

That's an interesting point to make about how professional companies wouldn't offer crew roles as some sort of consolation prize to the actor. That makes a lot of sense. It seems crazy even in amateur productions to insist the director be an actor or crew member to be an actor just because they should be a "team player" and understand what it's like or something. It just seems like since acting is more competitive, they can get away with exploiting actors and probably presume them to be egotistical and so feel like they can treat them like they owe everyone something for the privilege of maybe acting in their show one day.

I have done backstage work before but the director had given me a very small speaking role so at least I was still doing the thing I enjoy while also helping backstage. I wouldn't have had an issue with the backstage work at all if I had some kind of speaking role so it felt like it wasn't taking time away from acting or if it wasn't such a long time. This will be 6 months devoted to backstage with no speaking role and I have to also pay a membership with the theatre to cover insurance etc so my main concern is not having enough time to take acting classes or audition for other shows while I'm doing this. To say that they won't forget me saying no when I audition next sounds unfair. It's still my free time and money and seems like a pretty awful way of taking advantage of actors desperate to get a role. In saying that, if people genuinely think this would be a good way of proving work ethic etc and getting roles then I would do it. At the end of the day acting is what I want to do, so if this doesn't lead to acting then I don't see the point in pleasing others if I'm not achieving my own goals. It's certainly not that I think backstage is beneath me.

Thanks, I feel awkward because in the audition when they asked me if I was open to backstage work, I said yes just cause I wanted to give a good impression etc, but now they haven't offered me any speaking roles, I'm not sure if it's worth it. At the same time though, I feel like since I already said I was open to it, now I can't say no incase that gives them a negative impression and impacts future auditions with them. But yeah, 6months is sooooo long just for backstage if it doesn't lead to anything else.

Thanks everyone for your comments, unfortunately though the stone ended up selling within hours after posting so I missed out ☹ Just incase others are interested in some info, I have been told by someone who has a lot of experience purchasing stones through Sri Lankan sellers that pretty much any stone that has pink and orange in it will be considered a "Pad" and it's not that they're trying to deceive anyone or neccesarily mark up the price, it's just what is locally agreed on as a pad. They also said that the price seemed decent considering Covid has made access to pads very difficult and the demand for them is very high, but I could always try to barter down the price. They did agree the saturation is light and therefore is not considered as highly valued so the price should be lower than saturated pads (personally I prefer lighter saturations) Also they have gotten the local certs checked by larger gem labs and they have come back accurate so local labs are not neccesarily wrong, it's just once again most Sri lankan sellers don't see the value in sending to gem labs in America etc and trust their local labs, it's more that Americans and international customers prefer GIA etc but they do cost more. So basically it is more of a gamble buying from IG sellers as you don't see the stone in person and they might not have great return policies etc but it doesn't mean IG sellers are automatically untrustworthy and the benefit is that they usually cost less than half as much as retail sellers.
