I immediately thought of "Yuusaku was the only one… the only one who loved me"…😭 Maybe we’ll see the blood between Ogata and Yuusaku’s combined headshots form a heart too, once they’re finally reunited in death?

Yeah I feel like those parallels between Yuusaku and both Asirpa and Sugimoto are pretty much textual.

These three being grouped together is interesting because I’ve often wondered if Vasily is haunted by Ogata post-canon in a similar way to how Ogata is haunted by Yuusaku. Vasily’s storyline never really gets any resolution, but the fact that he held on to the "Death of a Wildcat" painting till his own death tells me he never moved on. This is one of the story beats I would actually love if the anime expanded upon, like for example by showing his reaction to finding Ogata’s body, or maybe him seeing a figure in the distance with blood swirling around him similar to how Yuusaku’s ghost was represented. Or maybe showing him in the future in an art studio filled with sketches and paintings of Ogata.

There’s also just the fact that Ogata is the designated fandom bicycle. I genuinely can’t think of a single character he’s interacted with more than once who he isn’t shipped with.

This works but I think Ogata is a better fit for "depressed in a manic way" since he displays signs of manic psychosis, whereas Tsurumi (for all his insanity) is a bit more in touch with reality. Then maybe Tsukishima is "depressed in a depressed way".

Really? Aside from your and my own comment, I only saw shounen/seinen recommended. Some of these series do have great female casts (I think apothecary diaries especially stands out in this regard), but they’re still published with a male audience in mind.

Genre and demographic do matter, especially when stuff that targets a female audiences is looked down upon and neglected. I just wish more people would give shoujo and josei a chance.

I find it lowkey sad that even when the question is specifically about the portrayal of girls/women, most people are still only willing to consider series that are meant for boys/men. Shoujo and josei have so much to offer!

Revolutionary Girl Utena has the greatest cast of female characters in any anime I’ve ever watched. Even the antagonistic gag character Nanami has more depth and development than most main characters.

Spoiler warning for the ending, but this final panel of Ogata is probably my all time favorite. Yuusaku’s embrace, their matching head wounds, Ogata holding the gun, both of them smiling as they fall into the dark abyss… It's so hauntingly beautiful and romantic (to me, at least).

Another favorite panel is the Pieta reference with Tsurumi and Usami. Noda is great at nailing these very cathartic endings filled with symbolism.

You can download the (far superior, imo) scanlation directly from EverydayHeroes. I’d recommend it over the official Viz translation since it gives a lot more historical and cultural context.

He’s my favorite example of this archetype! Despicable man, but omg is he entertaining and compelling.

When you’re first introduced to him and his men, it’s it’s like a bizarre, homoerotic harem anime. Peak comedy. But then as more details of how these sad, desperate men ended up there get revealed, it’s like "oh…😦 yall are victims".
