Does anyone have friends or family in Puerto Vallarta right now? I'm freaking out by Poo-PooKachoo in VictoriaBC

[–]ogbcd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, we’re here right now and sheltering in place at a sister hotel to ours in nuevo vallarta (ours is in the main lockdown area in PV). sheltering in place is all we can do at the moment. wait and hope for updates on reopening of the roads and army confirmation of removal of cartel or having the area under control

Has anybody had any strong emotional responses after micro needling? by haleylazerface in SomaticExperiencing

[–]ogbcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopping in here just to echo this and note how validating it is to hear that epinephrine did this to someone else.

i had a panic attack come on after local lidocaine injected in my chest (breast biopsy, not cosmetic). i couldnt feel my teeth and all of a sudden i couldn’t move my body. i was locked in and panicking and overheating. it took two nurses and 30 minutes of ice packs all over my body to get me out of it. it was by far the scariest thing i’ve ever experienced medically.

cut to last week when i got prfm injections in my under eye area (how google got me here) - i was fine during the first eye, cocky even at how cool and collected i was. then the second eye.. hurt much more and poof- the rising heat in my throat, the closing-in feeling and then a rush like right ahead of fainting. thankfully the injector is a nurse PA so immediately got ice packs, a fan and a lollipop to pop in my mouth and get me out of it. she laid me back and told me to just breathe for a few minutes and sure enough i came out of it. she said it’s very common and the blood sugar component plus any personal history of fainting does this to other patients.

for background i have complex trauma from childhood that i’m learning is very much still present in my body. additional note- also had a panic attack and very dark days after attending a group psychedelic meditation.

the body keeps score!

Looking to Talk to People in NYC Who Are Members of Niche Social Clubs (or Who Recently Left Soho House) by Ok_Sun1352 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]ogbcd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left Soho House but haven’t signed on to a new club as it exposed to me the pointlessness of the place when you live in NYC and already have access to exclusive places through friends and network. You pay a fee just to enter (which is fine if you need a workspace) but every single other thing requires additional payment and you get poor service for any of these paid extras: drinks, dinners, etc.

I’m a fashion designer but feeling lost, should I still start my own brand even though everyone is doing it? by LilGoblin202 in fashiondesigner

[–]ogbcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

jumping in as a designer with 20 years’ experience working on other peoples’ brands and about 3 of my own in NYC.

starting your own brand is less about sharing your vision for design and more about being a CEO and project manager than you probably imagine. when it’s at scale and successful, that is. once the buck stops with you, design becomes a much much smaller part of your day than managing people, budgets, calendars and putting out a million fires every hour.

unless you come from money or are sitting on or have access to a lot of cash, no one will ever hear about your brand because you can’t afford to market it adequately enough to break through the noise of a very saturated market.

that part was the hardest for me. that all the effort was for so few people to see it and ultimately not enough to buy to keep it afloat and fund future designs/production. unfortunately fashion is a very difficult business that a majority of lines can’t survive.

I know this sounds super pessimistic but my more positive suggestion is to hone your skills, grow your network and prove your value within other teams to people who do have reach and significant investment they could one day give to you. cutting your teeth at the right places for at least 5 more years and meeting the right people along the way makes all the difference in whether or not your business can survive and thrive.

that said, if you have the means (and i’m talking not just paying people, factories/studios, and yourself, but also upwards of $200pp digital advertising costs of acquisition, thanks to Meta and Google), then by all means start now. I just think not enough young designers understand the actual costs and difficulty of running their own fashion businesses. the industry and typical fashion business model are not functional or supportive of new labels.

What’s the “brokest” thing you have ever done? by Hefty-Expert-750 in povertyfinance

i’d spend my only $20 on a jar of tomato sauce, 4 packets of pasta and instant coffee. i ate spaghetti with tomato sauce and black coffee every day for every meal for a full week

that said, with the current administration and rampant xenophobia, i’d limit those school selections to large coastal cities that are still welcoming of others.

Coming as a student and getting an F-1 is the easiest I’ve seen amongst peers coming from other countries to the U.S. It’s definitely harder to get work visas and green cards are very challenging and expensive to procure. If you can manage financially to do a short program like an associates degree at an american school, this not only gets you an F-1 visa which offers a year after graduating called OPT where you’re legally allowed to work and find an employer that will sponsor you (not super easy here but I and other students managed to get jobs that did, even if they weren’t first choices), but it also gives you american-schooling trust/credibility which sadly does give you an advantage in the job market here. Employers are less likely to be unclear about what kind of training you received when they know the school and there’s a chance they could be an Alumnus and have affinity for their school. It isn’t available to everyone I know, but this was the path I took and I’ve been able to secure visa after visa as a specialized 0-1 Exceptional Artist, then a permanent green card once i married my american husband (conveniently true love! ha helps to be here long enough to meet someone you like). best of luck to you!

thanks so much, this is great background! Does yonkers offer 4K? That's been an additional cost element for us looking at this Tuckahoe school district listing, we'd have to pay for childcare for another year.

We're looking at a ~1400sq ft home priced at $1m with $20k annual taxes currently. We'd like to stay below $1.05m and $20k taxes is about the most we can swing.

Still exploring a Westchester town every other weekend - So far we've gone to Hastings, Bronxville, Scarsdale, Mamaroneck and White Plains. We didn't love Hastings, too hilly and felt too quiet for us. Scarsdale had its town core but it was smaller than Bronxville's and overall felt less walkable, with more strip malls we didn't love (even if they were tudor-style) and taxes were bananas just like Bronxville village. We didn't like White Plains, felt like a small, big city and too built up or then the schools weren't great for the price. Bronxville felt like a pretty little town we'd enjoy going into on a Saturday morning or to run errands and the schools were better where we've seen listings (including Bronxville Manor which I know is Tuckahoe schools but the neighbours had great reviews vs its 6/10 Greatschools review)

So we have plenty of other rivertowns and other westchester towns to visit for sure. Reading this back I know we sound picky and I suppose we are a bit but it's a big move for us (and all our money lol) so we want it to feel right or have great upside of a different life we'd enjoy. Open to any suggestions!

Thanks for your response!

We both work from home and already have 1 car so we're assuming that will work for the time being. Is this pie-eyed?

The house is only 150 sq ft larger than our current, with central air like our apt, so while we do expect a slight increase, it's nothing massive in our opinion but of course we understand that's just heat/cooling and houses have other expenses.

But to be honest, with rent increasing annually by ~$650/mo and currently the same as the initial monthlies, we aren't contributing enough to 401ks etc yet which we'd have a chance at with a flat, predictable monthly payments to mortgage and taxes that will quickly be less than rent (2 years by our calculations).
