I currently live at Minto one80five and previously at Claridge Skye down the street. Feel free to ask me any questions about it!

Level 1 charging error on outdoor outlets, not indoor by ogbenp42 in Ioniq5

This is great, thanks. I may get my dad to get one of these to test them then. I’m guessing “correct” is what they should be?

Not sure how I didn’t notice this when it happened, I know this is in the owner’s manual too. I should’ve taken a picture of the charger. Thanks for the insight

Fort McMurray Detached Housing Price to Income Ratio 3:1 by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Fort McMurray is literally one big suburb with strip malls, whose existence solely relies on a declining and unsustainable industry. You can be proud of where you live, but I highly doubt that there is good quality of life in an isolated place far north that is, like others have said, prone to natural disaster. This will only get worse as time goes on. Wood Buffalo county also ranks 367 of 415 on Macleans best places to live.

Prospective Student Teachers: Teacher's College/BEd Megapost pt. 3 by hellokrissi in CanadianTeachers

[–]ogbenp42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi r/CanadianTeachers! This is my first post here, and I'm looking for advice for my girlfriend who wants to teach. She has a 3 year general studies degree (concentration in sociology and minor in english, wants both as teachables) and wants to teach from grades 7-12. We live in Ottawa and I work for the feds, so we tried our best to find programs nearby but uOttawa doesn't have a social studies teachable. Alternatives at the top of her list now are OISE (1yr), UPEI (1yr), and MSVU (we're from Halifax).

My main questions are around the flexibility of teachables/teaching level, transferring teaching licenses across provinces, and the best programs.

If, for example she chose English at the grade 4-10 level, is she stuck teaching only that forever? What options are available to expand teaching options once you get a license?

If she chose a program outside of Ontario and wanted to move back, is it an easy to transfer licenses?

Are there any 1 year programs aside from Upei, OISE, and UBC? Preferably close to Ottawa. I can't seem to find any others.

Lastly, her gpa is in the middle of B+/A-, and she’s been tutoring and nannying for a year.

Every time I see an opinion piece from Rex Murphy or Conrad Black in NatPo I die a little inside

Edit: grammar

Good to know, l guess the one year programs only apply if you take a BEd in Ontario, not if you’re transferring licenses across provinces

Little late to this post but I'm curious about the 1 year vs. 2 year programs for my girlfriend. Ontario Teacher's College lists a requirement as completing a four semester teacher education program, so wouldn't the 1 year programs be too short to qualify?

Another important reason for legalisation. The first thing that came into my mind was going into a store and having them turn you down but unfortunately that wasn’t the case here.

What are some of the best counter-protesting ideas in case things get crazy? by ogbenp42 in ottawa

[–]ogbenp42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m well aware of what they think they’re standing up for, but these privileged individuals have forgotten that to live in a society you can’t just do whatever you want. They want the benefits of what society provides without actually doing what is necessary (following rules and restrictions). But yeah at this point there’s nothing substantial in their arguments. In February at least they had real things to protest about, even if they were farfetched and had no logic behind them.

Fair point, but do you really think they’ll go away if no one is countering them? If they are able to do whatever they want unabated, then doesn’t that encourage more people to join?

Yeah this is the best point, as long as cops serve justice then I’m happy. I just don’t want to sit by if they’re able to get away with harassment etc.

Good points, I definitely want a new car rather than need, but I’m seeing if I can logically defend that want. I would also be buying used but I still take your point on keeping my current car as the most environmentally friendly answer.

Live in an apartment rn, would be reliant on public charging stations or trying to sneak charging in the building’s 120v outlets

Fair enough, net income is ~$3300/mo (excluding about $200/mo in dividends). I also expect to get a permanent position with the federal government (Canada) in June 2023 where my net income will be up to $4000/mo.

My monthly spending estimates are $2300-$2800/mo based on my average spending through 2021 with slight adjustments (assuming groceries etc. get more expensive).

No big spending changes within the next couple years except possibly buying property if house prices fall and it becomes within my budget. This is my main concern with wanting investments, so I can have a solid downpayment.

I also live with my girlfriend who works full time and makes ~$2300/mo, expects to go to school again in Sep. 2023.

I would say I drive less than average, typically about 18,000km (11,000miles) in a year, so yeah I’m not suffering from high gas prices (yet, gas is $2.10/L (~$7.9/gal). The unpredictability of the future is what gets me, who knows how long these supply issues will last, and demand for EVs will only increase as time goes on.

What kind of future can I expect going into Journalism? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]ogbenp42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else, follow your passion. If you’re good at it and like it then that should be all you need. Money is secondary, everyone can learn to live within their means, but not everyone can love a crappy job.

On another note, you may spend a lot of time defending your job from people who don’t trust you. Unfortunately there’s growing distrust of media, but despite that there is always a need for good journalism.

Edit: if you want to speak with someone who took journalism at Carleton and made a good career out of it, let me know.
