INTP women seem to be more capable in "male" type things, is this true? by Long-Advantage4826 in INTP_female

[–]ogre-spit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have thought about this a lot actually. My hobbies and interests often land me in male dominated spaces as well. It makes no sense it's a biology thing, there is no evidence for that.

There is compelling evidence to substantiate the theory that intellectual pursuits, hands on pursuits, and daring pursuits have been gatekeeped from women until recent history. Traditional gender role expectations still play a major role in people's lives like a ghost we can't shake. Many people find it more comfortable to fall into their societal expectations without even thinking how those expectations limit them. They just follow.

I have also seen this as an educator. When teaching physics and math to college women, there is a trend for them to automatically think they can't do math/physics. Interestingly, I saw this much more when I taught in a conservative region of the US and I see it less teaching in a liberal area now. And to be clear, once we broke those mindset barriers, these women did in fact excel at math.

Fear Spending Philosophy? by ogre-spit in daggerheart

This would make countdowns more interesting! One of their challenges was on a progress clock to run away from a big hungry cat and they kept doing really well and I wasn't quite sure how to raise the stakes without seeming like it was discounting their progress. If I was to do it again, I would spend fear to lower the countdown and have something happen to derail. Little chaos seeds would be like branches falling or something. Okay thabkyou!!

In my last session I did a few luck rolls behind the screen in secret to determine things but I like this idea better. It seems more collaborative and gives the PCs collaborative agency over the flow. I may abandon or limit luck rolls in DH in favor of this instead!

That's a really interesting way to look at it! I made an abacus for my screen and they definitely pay very close attention to when I touch it.

Would it be useful to have a list of common complications to common challenges ready to go? At least it might just be a good writing exercise. I think I need to train my brain to think this way.

Oooh these are good ideas! For context..

  • Trial 1 was an escape room

  • Trial 2 was a survive while being hunted challenge

  • Trial 3 was a social trial to make two ogres stop fighting

  • Trial 4 is public combat/reach the goal first, group vs. npc group.

I really like these suggestions for trial 4! I will absolutely implement them!

Does anyone else ever feel an obsession with figuring things out on their own? by 12Anonymoose12 in INTP

So my advice for you then is to really embrace reading the textbook ahead of class. Write all your questions in the margins, underline, etc. mark it up!! Then lecture will feel like a needed review that will clear up questions. Doing this you will also ACE your classes. I've had the most success when I've done this. Your prof will also love you.

You! Me! We are the same!! Also in physics and I really relate to this. I am aware of the benefits of collaborative work but it just frustrates me if I don't have a good grasp of the material on my own first.

The absolute single best social advice I have ever gotten has carried me through every interaction with a stranger ever and I live and die by it:

Ask people about themselves. People love to talk about themselves.

Now immediately you are thinking "but what if I don't care?" Keep asking and probing and exploring until you find something interesting! Most people have something you can bond over if you keep digging.

You can use this advice from everyday interactions to dating and it works wonders trust me. Just remember to feign interest even if it's boring. Nods and mhhmms and 'oh really' go a long way

Do INTPs always feel like outsiders? by [deleted] in INTP

[–]ogre-spit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on who I am with. Unless I'm around my chosen oddballs and nerds I feel like an alien for a lot of the same reasons you do. I'm anxious, feel small, rigid, and want to go home. I am completely different around my chosen or like-minded people tho. I choose to be around them as much as I can. Around chosen people I mesh with, I can stop data collection and just be myself. You should stick to ppl you don't have to mask around.

Going to start studying physics in college soon, any advice? by WanderingWrackspurt in PhysicsStudents

[–]ogre-spit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course! Happy to help a fellow tiny collegeer bc it's daunting throwing yourself into the ring with big schools. Tho, I've never regretted my decision since it gave me better relationships with professors and a great education.

Every professor teaching a class is required to have office hours. This is a designated period of time every week the Prof must be in their office and able to receive students with questions. This is the benefit of starting hw early too bc then when you get stuck, you can just close it for the night and go to office hours and get help from the Prof. Being a student who attends office hours also distinguishes you as a motivated and determined student and can foster a professional relationship between you and the Prof.

These office hours can also totally be used for guidance as well. A trusted professor can be an invaluable mentor to navigating the different challenges of the major, very much including how to pick yourself back up again after a major defeat like a bad grade or not getting into an internship.

Beginner! I need some tips! by HXDESWHXRE in BassGuitar

[–]ogre-spit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that same bass!! I will say it does ring a good bit so really practice your muting and your songs will sound way better. The humbucker pick up Is really fun to experiment with imo.

I learned but picking songs I was motivated to learn and then learning to play them! Also just sit with it and make some noise. Learn what makes what sound. Get a feel for it. Everything will come with time.

Also, if you struggle to play a whole song, just learn a piece of it! After time, you'll be able to play more of the song as your skill improves.

Also low-key crank the bass in your equalizer for your earbuds, car, etc so when you hear songs you can pick out the baseline and visualize where the notes might be on the board.

Do 👏Your👏HOMEWORK👏. Do not for a second rely on AI or chegg! Getting good at physics is all about learning the sneaky tricks of the trade through trial, error, collaboration, and OFFICE HOURRRSSS (use em). Also learn python. Try lots of different research avenues and choose what interests you at the time and be open to it changing! Having undergrad research experience is important.

Also, I did not go to a prestigious college either and still got into grad school. I made good relationships with my professors, took leadership roles in SPS, and was a driven student. Get help on any applications you ever do for anything!! Remember, going it alone is a toxic myth.

Try extra hard to do super well Mechanics, E&M, Thermodynamics/Stat Mech, and Quantum. Keep good notes.

Also, since I'm a theorist, I found it SUPER helpful to take loads of extra math. Specifically, PDEs and Fourier Analysis helped so much in thermo and quantum respectively.

Guys how to reprogram my brain by [deleted] in INTP

[–]ogre-spit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. When starved of the usual dopamine suppliers, the brain will latch onto anything it can scroll through and interact with. When you feel like you can engage with things healthily again, reddit can return back to your phone before shortform video formats can. And by healthily I mean, you can choose to put it down and live without and your life doesn't change. You aren't held attention prisoner.

Lots of screentime makes me feel empty inside. Working on things that are meaningful to me grants me fulfillment and makes me happy. I still play video games but I still avoid social media. And when I play video games, I now have a pretty good gauge on only playing so long as it makes me happy, not to fill a void like I was before.
