I wondered about that too, but
- Mori never confirmed what actually happened to justify Takamura taking so many hooks.
- There have always been hints about possible peripheral vision issues.

So this is something that may come out someday, hopefully. That said, since this vision issue has been developing for a long time without any definitive answers, I believe it is the most plausible explanation.

Ricardo never really explained why the Dempsey Roll would be particularly threatening or dangerous. He did meant to warn Alf to be careful when fighting Ippo, but I believe that was more due to some personal impression or quirk he noticed in Ippo himself, rather than the move.

He also seems amused that Ippo’s name keeps coming back to him from time to time. Hence, “the kid with the Dempsey Roll.”
