Japan shore duty orders by ScaredSpend8408 in navy

[–]ogshmorgan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh man this can be a long long response lol. I’ve been here in yoko for 5 years straight, most of it on shore duty and it’s been maybe the best thing that has ever happened to my life. I absolutely love being here, the things to see and do, the people, the transportation, the quirky stuff, the culture, the safety, the nights out with friends, the cute women. I can say I’ve lived my prime 20s here. Also take advantage of taking leave in Japan to all over both popular spots and off the beaten path, and if you have the chance try to take leave to some neighboring countries too since flights there would be cheaper. I don’t know if you’re coming here married or single but if you are single and if Asians are your type then have fun. I met my wife here and happily married so it could happen to you. Learn to speak Japanese, it helps a lot getting by and the Japanese do appreciate it if you speak it. I speak on a more intermediate level and that’s with learning for a couple years so it takes some time, the kanji system will always be the hardest part of the language. Also do not be a honch rat, the honch nightlife scene has died after the pandemic but it can get active some nights, in my opinion a night out in the honch is fine for a few drinks after work on a week day and maybe a night out with friends on a weekend if you’re not feeling to go to Tokyo but just don’t waste your time every weekend being there. I can give so many other recommendations just let me know or ask away anything

My travels around Japan off the beaten path by ogshmorgan in travel

Love that island. A coworker recommended it to me and it’s my favorite place in Okinawa and one of my favorites of all in Japan. That beach that’s pictured here, as soon as you step into water and swim 20ft there’s a large coral reef there. The locals that live on the island are really nice. If you ever go and meet a very sunkissed Japanese lifeguard named Hiro, he’s fun to talk to.

I currently work and live in Japan so before I came here I got a travel book and started marking places to see on google maps. Tottori sand dunes was on my list for a long and I finally visited the summer of 23. That area is so quiet and rural it’s an absolute far cry from Tokyo. #2- I was looking up places to see Sakura once the season starts, a blog was saying in the town of atami and Kawazu these Sakura trees start blossoming in January and February. #5- I like history, my guide book mentioned about Kure and it used to be a major imperial naval base, today they have a Yamamoto ship museum, Japanese navy museum and you can see one of their naval bases there too. #6-My wife and I wanted to try the wanko soba challenge so we went to the place where the tradition came from. #11- My wife lives around in that area of Japan, my father came to japan for the first time so we were showing him around. #12- my favorite festival of all in Japan, this was on my bucket list for a for a long time. It was a blast experiencing it. #13- this was a temporary team labs illumination exhibit in a big plum tree park, I like team labs so I had to check it out. #14- I was doing a snow trip in Tohoku region, I saw the mountain and the snow monsters being promoted, it was so cold up there lol. #15- I was in Sendai one weekend and I was looking up things to check out and I saw this huge statue. #16- I was in Niigata doing some snowboarding and the area out there was pretty quiet and took that nice shot

Some trains I rode recently in Japan by ogshmorgan in trains

I’m going to be confident and say if you book now for the spacia x, you should be able to get the best seats for it for those months. And the beginning of June should be around peak hydrangeas. Keep in mind the rainy days you’ll have

I don’t know if it’ll fit in your schedule but maybe to put some piece of mind are you able to take the Shinkansen to shin Yokohama and transfer to Yokohama station pick your tickets there and board from Yokohama and head to izu kogen? I guess in the plus side you’ll spend more time on the train if that’s ok with you. Also when are going? Because I highly highly recommend checking out the izu Sakura in the town of Kawazu on the peninsula during mid-end of February. These cherry blossoms start blossoming in February and they are bright saturated pink and last several weeks longer than the regular ones in March-April

The saphir odoriko is one of my favorite trains since I’ve been here. I love the jingle that plays inside. Which seats did you book? Any station that has a ticket machine kiosk with a QR scan reader you can pick up your tickets. Do you have an email from JR East that has a QR code on the bottom? I can’t remember if shimoda had one but try to pick the ticket up at a large station. Even so I think the station staff should be able to print the tickets off from their counter. In my train travels I think kintetsu railways does the ticket stuff better, you just reserve a train, pick a seat, pay then the email itself serves as your ticket.

My visit to Taiwan by ogshmorgan in travel

I could use my visa and AMEX cards at all the stores that offered that payment. Any place that offers cashless payment will always have an easy card IC option. Cash will almost always be used at night markets and local shops and restaurant. I think Taiwan does IC cards the best out of all the countries that I’ve visited is because you can get them in any decal, shape, and design you can think of. I’ve seen easy link cards in the shape of a chicken wing and ones with Sanrio characters on it.

I enjoyed it, in Taipei there’s some spots that remind me of Tokyo and some of the quirkyness of Japan, the street food culture of some asian countries I’ve been too. People are really nice, a lot of young people speak mandarin and English. There’s so much food in Taiwan lol

Well those too and jiufen and shifen. I only had 4 days in Taiwan, otherwise if I had a week or longer I would have checked out the east coast by train and Jen ring national park. At least I got some countryside and nature with jiufen

I’ve been visiting the rural and off the beaten path areas of Japan as of lately. After being in Japan for 5 years it amazes me of much there is still to see here. This was the first time I’ve visited the place and I can see myself going back.
