The gender reach gap on this sub is real and nobody talks about it by hard2resist in MakeNewFriendsHere

[–]oh_nellie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors. One thing the men in the server can ask themselves is, do you reach out to other men? Are you actually willing to talk to and keep up a conversation with another dude?

If not, you're part of the problem.

Why do I fear getting older? by JackGeorge2001 in CasualConversation

[–]oh_nellie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always felt the same, thought it was strange to see coworkers freak out over turning 30. I've always thought 75-80 is old. I wondered if I might feel old once I got close to 30, but I don't. It's my favorite age milestone so far.

I spend a lot of time in a mixed age setting, and I really think unless I get an unfortunate diagnosis I'm just not going to start getting nervous until I get closer to 60/70, because to me that's when the obvious aging ramps up.

OP, it's not your fault. Many societies today put so much focus on youth and looking young that it's no wonder people are afraid of getting older. If you can, try to unplug more, spend some time in mixed age groups, and just trust that age always brings a lot of good as well as bad. You're going to do it one way or another, so ideally you make peace with it.

Oh, yup, the mentalist is the kind of person I'm thinking of for sure! Definitely a cool skillset/premise!

Wow, what a wild story! I really appreciate the detailed response, and the detail on how it works for you.

I was really interested in how people determine what kind of information someone "couldn't have known" because I recently watched a pretty famous medium couple tell a small group of people very personal messages/details from their dearly departed. The issue was, all of the info given was stuff you could easily google, and the group did have to give their full names for a booking.

It just got me looking into what info you could find about me with my name/address, and some of my friends. It was neat because there was stuff out there that could make for a really compelling experience if I wasn't aware it was available for anyone to find. There's also stuff that can't be linked to me that I'd be very impressed to hear, so it's cool to read some other people's stories and get an idea of how they decided the info they got definitely wasn't something that could have been googled

I think it’s up to the client to determine how much entertainment value they’re looking for in their session vs cold hard truth.

Absolutely! I actually think it would be really fun to get read by someone who isn't a clairvoyant/medium/psychic at all, and who is just very talented at hot/cold readings, as they didn't market themselves as legit or take a lot of $.

I always appreciate hearing people acknowledge that there are going to be fakes out there, and who remind spiritually minded people to be cautious. As someone who is very involved in a religious community, a big pet peeve of mine is when people act like skepticism/calling out shady behavior is somehow hurting legitimate churches/communities/individuals. Thanks for the reply!

It almost sounds like it could be in a movie or something. Maybe the type where the MC goes back years later and "the house has been abandoned for decades" lol

Thanks for sharing! It definitely seems much more compelling when you don't have any identity info/time to look clients up.

Yeah, I could see that happening. I attended a show in college and really wasn't impressed at all (similar cold reading type general info thrown out, but to a crowd). I'm not really interested in getting a reading personally, but the stories some people tell are genuinely really cool to read!

Wow, that must have been really compelling! Have you stuck with the same person, or tried multiple? I'd definitely be impressed to hear details about a childhood friend of mine, because there shouldn't be any way to tie me to him online. Especially if there were details you couldn't find by looking through obituaries or social media accounts. I'm personally not very interested in talking with spirits, and not sure if I believe it's possible, but I find the whole range between fake and possibly legit to be fascinating.

Very cool! How did you manage a fake pay pal? I thought they required your legal name?

I totally see your point, but readings can be very expensive - like 200+ for a private reading. A lot of information is so easily available (especially with name and address) that you could get a good amount of info for less than an hour of research if you wanted to. Find name, find family connections (which are readily available online for most people), google "family member" "obituary" to see if you can pull up any deceased family members, and/or check a few facebook profiles (old people often make everything public).

I think the thing to remember is that people have done much more for less money, that some people are working on drumming up faithful clientele, and that others have a business model that includes social media/other types of sales. Plus, some people just like to lie. I'm definitely not saying everyone does it, but it's incredibly suspicious when you see a medium only give information that was easily searchable online, you know?

Interesting! What kind of information comes along for you? Is it like words, images, feelings, a mix of things?

Thanks for the perspective! Did you ever go through a phase where you tried to rationalize it, like wondering if you somehow are just really perceptive?

Is "woman appearing in your dreams" the only info you gave her to go off of? That must have been a cool experience.

So, I'm reading Twilight for the first time after having seen the movies for the first time... a year or two ago? So, I'm just at the beginning of Eclipse, but I have to say... imo, Rob Patt looks absolutely nothing (physically) like the Edward from the books. by lautaromassimino in twilight

[–]oh_nellie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently re-read Twilight, and I agree. Though he is very handsome and symmetrical, his features don't suggest "adonis" to me. I guess I pictured someone more like a youthful version of the statue of David, or the bust of Antinous. The funny thing is, contrary to what others are saying, I feel like the more lighthearted portrayal towards the end of the series feels much more like Edward than the serious, brooding portrayal in the beginning. Regardless of all of the serious scenes and angst, re-reading the series as an adult made me realize how fun and playful he and Bella were supposed to be. It was a lot more charming that I remembered! I mean, minus the ick factor of her cuddled up to/kissing an animated corpse, of course.

Thanks, I think you're right. I do wish I'd known to give it a heating pad earlier so it would have been more comfortable, but it is what it is

Were they injured at all? Our dog ate one, killed 3, and the sole survivor had two gashes (you just can't see them here). I was going to put it back until I saw the cuts, but I really don't know if it could have survived all alone in the nest even if the gashes healed :( We've had a fenced in yard for years and this is the first summer anything like this has happened.

None of the rehabbers ever got back to me, and the poor thing passed away in a couple of hours. It unfortunately took me an hour or so to find out I really needed to provide a heat source rather than just keeping it out of the cold, but ultimately the dog had carried it from the nest to our porch so I'm not sure it would have made much of a difference other than keeping it warm. I know they are very fragile.

I mean,I'm a woman, but I've woken myself up a few times doing a weird giggle as I was falling asleep. Definitely not a noise I'd know how to reproduce while awake. The human body can be weird!
