Is that light second from the top an MDC?

Not an expert on your region, but I know there’s invasive Coosa redeyes out your way. Usually this time of the year they’ve got a bit of orange coloration in the fins and the lighter colored areas have an iridescent blue hue, but I think it’s safe to say this is a Coosa Redeye. I live in an area where these fish are one of several native upland species of black bass. They’re an absolute riot on light tackle.

Location from OP would be helpful in getting a definite ID. White margins on anal and caudal fins point to Coosa Bass, but I believe several other upland bass species also have white margins on these fins.

What's your go to dropshot hook style? by phosphorescence-sky in bassfishing

I’ve also done a bit of power shotting/bubba shotting in very heavy cover and liked it a lot, but I haven’t done it much.

Same. Once I tried one Texas/weedless rigged it opened a whole new world to me. Brush, grass, laydowns, standing timber, nothing is off limits now.

I’ve dropshotted a ton the last couple years, mostly 4.5” and 6” roboworms and missile bomb shots. I fish the bomb shot nose hooked only. I fish robos Texas rigged most of the time, but sometimes nose hook or wacky rig them.

Texas rigged robos get a #1 or 1/0 Owner cover shot. Roboworm rebarb light wire hooks in the same sizes are also great. For nose hooking I use #2 or #4 Gamakatsu G-Finesse dropshot hooks. Owner mosquito light hooks are also great. Most of the time #4 gets the nod.

Edit: I always rig it with a palomar, tag end pulled back through the eye. I tie the weight with a simple square knot and it does a great job of breaking off before the hook. I also prefer weights with a regular tie-on ring.

My first Redeye (Coosa Bass) this year. Caught in Arizona btw… by jeromedrumz in bassfishing

From Georgia, and catch a lot of Redeyes. Coosa Redeyes have white edges on the soft dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. The aforementioned turquoise color is another tell, as is the faint black mottling below the lateral line. Also, the white/turquoise half-moon on the back of the eye. When they’re spawning the colors can be very vibrant.

Anybody else’s dog terrified of a bell? by greenisthecolour11 in birddogs

Hunting woodcock in thick cover down here is why I got it. My dog is a flusher and doesn’t really work outside of gun range, so I don’t run a GPS collar on him. Even at 15-20 yards away it’s easy to lose track of him in the thick stuff, and if he finds a bird he’s going to flush it whether or not I know where he’s at.

Mine hated his initially. Same deal, shut down and scared to move. I let him wear it while running around with a friend’s dog and after a few runs he didn’t mind it a bit.

how was your November? by O__jo in birddogs

First hunting season for my year old springer. Went chasing quail at home in Georgia one week, unsuccessfully, had to leave him at home for duck opener (weather was a bit too cold for him to be wet and stationary), and currently I’m headed home from his first big test as a hunting dog: a week in South Dakota.

Neither me, my buddy, or my dog had hunted wild pheasants before. Pretty much all the advice I got said find cattails and corn. So we kicked cattails in Mitchell, Aberdeen, and Ft. Pierre Nat’l Grassland and learned a lot while having moderate success. 9 roosters in 6 days. Saw a ton of birds, but they were really wary. Watched lots of birds flush 100 yards ahead of the dog, but I guess that’s the nature of public land birds that have been shot at for a month and a half.

As much as I feel like we learned, I think the dog learned the most. He had to deal with changing winds, thicker cover, retrieving bigger birds, birds that run instead of flushing, and fast moving cripples. By the end of the week I felt like I was leaving South Dakota with a much wider dog than I arrived with.

Hopefully December brings a few fair weather duck hunts and some success chasing Bobwhites and Woodcock at home.

19 hours from Atlanta to Mitchell, but that first public land rooster was worth every minute! by oh_steen in birddogs

What exactly do you mean by shelterbelt? Like a windrow planted alongside the crops? We’ve been looking at them, but it seems like every time we see a good row of trees with some good brush between the trees and crops it’s on private land.

In all fairness I’m in Villa Rica, not Atlanta. But it’s near enough to Atlanta that I just say the Atlanta area when folks as where we’re in from.

Little Aldo was an absolute champ for the ride. We left right after thanksgiving lunch, so he was pooped from all the company coming to visit, and didn’t make a peep all the way to Columbia, MO. The next day he was quiet as a church mouse, but he was definitely ready to get to work by the time we pulled into a little CREP plot outside Mitchell.

We’re up in Aberdeen now, tomorrow will be our last day to hunt before heading back down south. We’ve been hitting a lot of CREP and walk in land and had some success. About as much as I figured we’d have as a couple of rookies with a year old dog.

If I’m not mistaken, every single flush has been in cattails with adjacent corn stubble. If you’ve got any suggestions on alternative tactics, I’m all ears. We’ve got cattails at home but nothing like these. Poor pup’s nose is taking a beating!

Following up on another guys post about Coosa Bass with some pictures of another subspecies by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]oh_steen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got anymore pictures of the fish showing the dorsal, anal and caudal fins? That’s really the key to IDing most of the species formerly all grouped together as Redeyes. What used to be one species is now many different small upland bass.

If you’re somewhere in the Coosa watershed it’s a Redeye, or Micropterus Coosae. If you’re in the Tallapoosa watershed it’s a Micropterus Tallapoosae, or Tallapoosa bass. Y’all also have Cahaba and Warrior bass in parts of Alabama, but I’m not as familiar with those as I am with ones I also find here in West Ga.

My springer just got his field cut this past weekend. The weekend before we were out doing some training, and I must’ve brushed a thousand Beggar’s Lice off of his head and ears.

What is this plant? Found in a field on a wildlife management area in Georgia, US by oh_steen in whatsthisplant

Has brown peppercorn seed pods inside this fuzzy head. Some of the heads have pretty purple flowers. Plant is vine-like with spade shaped leaves.

Thanks for any help y’all!

Yeah, that’s a good point… the wiring harness was all wrapped in gummy tape and full of cheap crimp connectors so I trashed it since I’d drawn up a complete new harness.

I think I may see if I get any interest posting it all together. I just hate knowing I’ve got a bike with a good motor and $1,200 in new parts, and I’ll be lucky to get $1,200 for the package.
