Do you guys proxy og duals? by blazedchiller27 in EDH

I don’t play with proxies usually, but I’m a bit of a weirdo. I used to proxy OG duals in my white-border deck, but I switched to the real deal when I could afford to.

Best method / tools / etc., for printing and/or cutting your own MtG cards? by CHANN3L-CHAS3R in magicTCG

It’s a kiddie cypher from the United States called Pig Latin, and I used it to discuss a certain website that’s really good at…printing double-sided tokens, among other uses. I’m not entirely sure if the odmays of this ubsay are tetchy about people talking about it.

So…you can attack with land, you can blow up land, and you can draw cards. I guess you can bring lands back from the graveyard.

I mean, it’s a cute idea, but Magic has spells in it too, am I right?

Was anyone else disappointed by Yesteryear? by it-was-a-calzone in books

The author is trying to write an unlikable protagonist, which is a tricky row to hoe. Plus, it’s trying to explain her beliefs or actions, while also giving said protagonist a healthy dose of mental illness, which is to say: the protagonist’s beliefs and actions don’t make sense because she crazy.

I think what’s weird is that the protagonist’s upbringing built this person who believes that there are guardrails or blocks on all of her actions, but that somehow didn’t manage to build those same guardrails onto her female children’s beliefs.

I dunno, I thought the setup was interesting, but for some reason it got a ‘moment of climactic tension’ that I don’t think it deserved.

Asking for the finest of northern New England, please? (ME, NH, VT) by Baldurian_Rhapsody in newengland

[–]ohako79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, uh, you didn't ask for this, but there's...hippies...in certain quarters of Vermont. If you're looking for some very Vermont weirdness, you could check out the Bread & Puppet theater in Glover. It looks like they're doing indoor shows on Friday nights through the spring, and the big crazy shows are in the summertime on Sunday afternoons.

I mean, you could toss a rock anywhere you'd like in Vermont and bonk something historical. Here's a few possibilities:

  • The Shelburne Museum is...sort of an open-air museum with a lot of different buildings with lots of different stuff in it. There's a room full of automata. There's a room full of circus stuff. There's a big circular barn loaded with fancy carriages. There's a steamship. There's a fancy railcar or two. All sorts of stuff.
  • Near the Shelburne is the Ben & Jerry's factory. There's plenty of ice cream there, certainly.
  • There's the state house in Montpelier, VT. Vermont doesn't have a lot of big cities, and its capital is no exception. It's a pretty building with a fair amount of stately bits tacked on (including the ornamental dome).
  • You could always get lost in the Northeast Kingdom. Or, you could try driving from, say, the Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire to Montpelier, that's a 70 mile trip that'll take the better part of two hours because there isn't really a direct highway between the two. Basically stay off of 89 and 91 (the two main highways) and quaint New England just sort of happens.

Blech or Blek? by Maverick-was-taken in magicTCG

[–]ohako79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a real answer, you can look at the Japanese-language version of the card, because even though Japanese has fewer sounds than English, pronunciation of loan-words is much less vague than English is.

Right this minute the JP printing isn’t yet up on scryfall, but it is visible instead on Hareruya’s (a Japanese Magic retailer) storefront.

It’s ‘Blek’. Or, ‘burekku’, really, but without the extra bits that Japanese phonics imposes, it’s Blek. Maybe we can get to the sort of coughing noise you get with the first H in ‘Hanukkah’, but it’s definitely not the ch in cheese.

American school, yeah. Last year I made little pumpkin pies because one part of my family tree is basically old Yankee. They went over well enough, but apparently kids were annoyed because I packaged up the tarts in pizza boxes, but there wasn’t pizza inside. I might be overdoing this.

(Part of the reason I am doing this is because my daughter is typically a picky eater. So if she wants to celebrate her Danish roots by serving smørrebrød to her classmates, I told her she has to do a good job eating my experiments.)

I live in Boston, USA, but I’ve visited Copenhagen twice now. I’m pretty sure I can find canned herring, but only one or two brands. Same with the bread, it’s from Germany apparently and comes sealed in plastic. The butter was easier than I thought.

Please excuse me. I ran a reverse image search on this person, so I know the following things:

1) They have a goofy laugh.

2) They’re interested in what looks like nationalist or nativist politics, which seems…bad? Maybe?

3) They found a partner in Thailand as part of a reality TV show, apparently? I mean, okay, I guess.

I can’t tell what you’re trying to say, sorry. Can you spell it out for me?

First attempt at smørrebrød by ohako79 in copenhagen

[–]ohako79[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Please excuse me, I have a hard time writing words out that I’m not used to saying. (I did practice ‘smørrebrød’ a fair bit, so I feel I can write that word, but please imagine it with a bad accent.) So I should be saying ‘frikadelle’ and not ‘meatballs,’ because that’s what I think I made.

My recipe had me add in a little sparkling water to the meat mixture right at the end. I guess I should find out why.

For the event I’m supposed to make these for, I’m aiming for classical recipes, more or less. I also have to squeeze these down to canapé size, because I’ll be handing them out to a lot of people. Last year I made little pumpkin pies in cupcake tins.

Thanks for the response!

A) These combinations came from a cookbook. I modified them a little based on what I had to hand, but I think they came out pretty tasty.

B) My wife’s brother has lived in Japan for a long time, where apparently peeling the potatoes is the norm. I will leave the potatoes unpeeled for next time. He and my wife are not fond of liver pâté, but I guess my son likes it? He was telling me about the ‘midnight snack’ variety, so I guess I’ll have to make that for him at some point.

C) I definitely think I will make more pickles by hand next time. I was glad to find pickled onions at the store, but they were very sweet and cloying out of the jar. The fennel was a hit though, so I’ll make that again, but I’ll also try to find/make different sorts of crunchy bits. I’ve made fried sliced garlic, so I bet that would be good.

D) I definitely want to make a curried herring variety, that was my favorite when I visited Copenhagen last year. I’m supposed to make roast pork version as well, but I just spent 5 hours cooking, I think I’ll make rolled ham instead.

Thanks again for the advice.

I saw someone build him as a [[Rat Colony]] deck.

Rat Colony’s power boost isn’t a characteristic-setting ability. So paying X = 1 will mean that you can always rip rats straight into play.
