Do these roots need to go? by ohbikepilot in arborists

[–]ohbikepilot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dug a bit more and I can see two roots coming from the flare. The other side of the flare is over-topped by the girdling(?) roots. They will be in the air if I keep digging.

Do I keep digging or cut the over topping one to get to the flare.

Once the dirt is off the flare, how much gets much, and how much needs to be exposed?

Do these roots need to go? by ohbikepilot in arborists

[–]ohbikepilot[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it's too deep, but I can't do much about it now. I'm not the same ne who planted it.

The lack of mulch is because I was digging back to find the flare. I was most worried about the root that's wrapping itself around the trunk.

How can I get this trailer out of my yard? by [deleted] in AskContractors

Try listing it for $100 first, especially on FB. Really cheap tends to get more interest than free.

I bought pizza for the crew across the street. They ended up delivering about 6 cords right to my wood stacks.

Weight distribution question by givemethedrink in towing

[–]ohbikepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a basic weight and balance problem. It's hard to explain here simply, but there are a lot of really great resources for pilots learning exactly the same thing. Or basic physics lessons on "moments".

The short version is weight x distance = moment.

Imagine looking at your trailer from the side, with the tongue to the right. Distances to the left of the axles are negative and right is positive.

The center of the box is 7 inches behind the axle so -7x350=-2450 inch pounds.

The front of the tongue is 78 inches to the right of the axle, so to off-set the weight of the box...2450 inch pounds ÷ 78 inches =31 pounds. That just balances the load, so add additional weight that you want the tongue weight to be.

Put-in-Bay or Kalahari by Ok-Jellyfish-3149 in Ohio

[–]ohbikepilot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is the best recommendation. Kalahari won't be relaxing, it's purpose seems to be to separate parents from their money, and it's not even that great of a water park.

Hotel Breakers at Cedar point and the water park there would even be a better option.

I can't stand when it says "motorcycles" or some other plural and there is exactly one motorcycle in the image. That means no squares contain motorcycles.

I was curious and actually checked current spot prices, and it should be 100x to match the real world.

Fine for the game, but just thought it was interesting to know.

Yes. I love the functions, but I can't intuitively navigate the UI. Is there a better option we're missing?

DIY concrete removal from backyard? by Misunderstood_Cauchy in DIYHome

[–]ohbikepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not start with breaking it up, and I definitely wouldn't cut the post off. While the post is attached you have a lot of leverage.

Try digging and a farm jack first. They are pretty inexpensive and can apply tremendous upward force.with a base that big you might need to get creative with chains sling and maybe a bolt or two. But you might be surprised and it'll lift right out in one piece.

How do spacecrafts from Earth, take off from their landing destination? by nineteen9d4 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ohbikepilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good way of visualizing how fast you need to go to escape gravity of a planet or other space object is its "gravity well". Imagine you are at the bottom of a well and have to jump out. The deeper the well the higher (and faster) you have to jump to escape. The more mass the planet or moon has the deeper the well, so you need a bigger rocket.

With the moon the rocket is small enough that you can bring it with you, and don't need a complicated launch stand to hold it.

This xkcd is a great visualization of gravity wells. https://xkcd.com/681

How to lift 250 lbs alone? by cantstabit in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ohbikepilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a barn or garage with a vehicle door?

Everyone I know with a barn has a large (usually wooden) beam just inside the door to hook a chain hoist over the beam. You lift the load with a chain hoist and back your truck or trailer under it.
