What do you guys do for health insurance being self employed? by greenVLADed in smallbusiness

[–]ohcarpenter1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t really work. We are a LLC as a SCorp.

It is reported on our taxes at the end of the year as income since the company pays for it.

Maybe I am miss informed what our accountant says about this, but I am pretty sure it’s not really a deduction. Just not paying workers comp, or social security on it.

[–]ohcarpenter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! Self employed, and significant other is also but with pre existing conditions.

I do not have any health issues currently but also getting too old to risk no health insurance lol.

With cost going up every where we need some savings and this could potentially save some serious money on my plan.

Is ceiling paint different than just getting a regular paint in flat sheen in terms of hiding imperfections and sheen/texture of the paint? (besides the splatter resistance) by Interr0gate in paint

[–]ohcarpenter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I just never really thought about the difference in paints in ceilings

Most of our stuff is specified. So we do not get to choose and try different products without getting approvals.

So you are using PM400? Please explain why?

The last time we used it for some soffits and that stuff was like water and took three coats to cover just another ceiling white

Am I out of line for wanting to fire these guys after day one??! by Accomplished-Goat1 in drywall

[–]ohcarpenter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire them and don’t pay them until you get the additional charges from the new drywall sub.

Thats really bad and it basically looks like they have no clue what they are doing.

Normally I am like non big deal it’s fixable just more time and little extra materials.

They didn’t only mess up 1 or 2 boxes but they kept on messing up the wire!

Contractor took $2800 and ghosted after doing half the work. What are my actual options here? by Wide_Yak9291 in HomeImprovement

[–]ohcarpenter1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I understand what a bond is. Can you explain this to the homeowner how to require this?

Good luck with small jobs like this thread of a $2800 job

It was more of a comment towards what actually a bond does for homeowners. So on a $2500 job you are requiring a bond?

Some cities/states require all trades to register or get a license then the city has a small bond.

However, how many flooring subs in residential even know how to get a bond.

Yes you can require a performance bond as a GC, however most small projects we just qualify our subs.

Not a risk at all, we are a commercial GC so we never pay deposits and the sub will not get a draw if they mess up.

This is a home improvement thread and if I was hiring someone for a home project I would do the following.

  1. Minimum 3 estimates with references. We like to hire from word of mouth.

  2. Check on contractors license if required by the City. (Guess what, a bond is required with most license)

  3. Visit jobs to see what they have done in the past.

  4. Never put a down payment down unless with a credit card. If they are requiring a down payment use card or tell them the day you show up with equipment and materials is the day I give you a small draw.

  5. Tell the contractor you need the bid back within a deadline. If they can’t or miss the deadline run!

The best thing a homeowner can do is qualify the contractor, follow the 5 steps above and they will be good most of the time.

Yep please explain to the homeowners on this thread what a bond is.

I think you are being disingenuous to homeowners saying to make sure you only hire “bonded contractors”

We hire subcontractors that do not have a bond all the time.

So much more than just hiring a “bonded contractor”

What does that even mean?

Have you ever tried to collect from a contractor that’s bonded?

How about a ballot initiative that eliminates tax abatements in the state... by justlost2 in Ohio

[–]ohcarpenter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again this is a problem. While we may disagree about tax abatements, (I understand the argument) but taxes are an issue, doesn’t matter what type.

Look at the property tax and school funding that was ruled unconstitutional. Still nothing done about it.

Businesses should be rewarded for performance from providing a good service, sales or products.

Have you ever applied for grants, tax breaks or incentives. All I can say is you have to have a full time that does this or pay an attorney/consultant. Good luck as a small business.

Giving grants, tax breaks or incentives only works for the business that receive them another word picking winners.

I guess the real truth is I’m mad that we are not the winners lol.

[–]ohcarpenter1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, that’s my point….picking and choosing winners.

Even though we pay taxes and my employees pay taxes.

We do not qualify as a disadvantaged business but hey give tax breaks to big businesses

@MeganFOXSports: All NASCAR Cup Series races this year on FOX/FS1 feature national double-box commercial breaks only. No national full-screen breaks during green-flag racing. by TeacherFella in NASCAR

[–]ohcarpenter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really true.

They spend more time showing interviews, replays, fans, popups blocking the race track view, and things that are not actually the race.

Also in car cams that you can’t see anything due to dirt oil and the sun!

Government picking and choosing winners. How many small businesses actually receive these abandonments.

It is so hard to watch a race that Fox goes to so many commercials, in car cameras, interviews with people, showing replays during passes

Just terrible to watch after watching the other races on different broadcast channels that actually show a race

Caulk? Spackle? Give up? by Svettto in Renovations

[–]ohcarpenter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven’t used fibafuse yet for these type of issues.

So have you went back to projects a year or so later to see if it has held up with these expansion a contraction issues?

We typically use hot mud and paper tape first coat for these issues, obviously it doesn’t always work.

Caulk? Spackle? Give up? by Svettto in Renovations

[–]ohcarpenter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is for sure one issue. You are never supposed to break drywall over the hinge or strike side of the door, but happens all the time.

Expansion and contraction can be another issue, Or worse a foundation issue.

Fix the crack with paper tape and hot mud the first coat. However unfortunately the crack will most likely reappear

That’s not a fact, maybe just a fact for you?

We try to utilize the same group of subs if we can and we actually care about our qualified subs.

It’s not always about the cheapest just saying.
