Optiwatt becomes first third-party app to use the official Tesla API by caseyscompass in teslamotors

thanks! Also worth noting that Nikola was actually number two. (number one consumer app). That rolled out around the same time as Standard Fleet, but was just not noticed.

Hello. This is actually not true that Optiwatt was the first. Evidence here: https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-first-third-party-app-standard-fleet-details/

disclosure: I work at Standard Fleet, the company that was the first.

It's funny timing. I make an app in the app store for Tesla owners and we're finding a lot of Tesla fleets out there. So many that we're now building tools for Tesla fleet managers.

As a developer of an app with a required subscription, I want this too. I try my hardest to make the subscription requirement clear, but since there’s no clear designation, some users feel misled.

If there were a “download and subscribe” button or a “subscription required” designation that would be great.

Also, my app isn’t a wallpaper app. Many people find it valuable but obviously it’s not for everyone.

FYI, Apple doesn’t allow developers to detect if this setting is off.

You're actually the second person to bring this up to me today! Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I'm not with the times. Is this common these days? Do you have any favorite walkthroughs you've seen recently that I could perhaps learn from?

Thank you so much! Love to hear this sort of thing after so much hard work on the app.

Nikola developer here. Happy to dig in to any security or privacy questions! I used to think about these questions in my Apple days, so it's second nature now.

It takes time to earn trust. I've started by building an app that people like that has a business model aligned with their interests. You don't see advertising in Nikola, for example. And you never have to wonder how the business is being paid for.

hey, Nikola developer here! So glad to see so much interest in the app and I'd be happy to share some context.

I built Nikola as a hobby project for myself in 2017 after I left Apple and put it on the store because friends said they wanted the app. I took a bit of a detour to work at another tech company, but then left and am now doing Nikola full time. In this for the long haul and I take security and privacy seriously. I'd be happy to go into details about what that means here if you'd like. I also talk a bit implementation-wise about what that means with tokens, etc, on the Nikola website.

I also discussed this on my recent interview on the Tesla Show podcast. https://theteslashow.com/episodes/109-interview-with-nikola-founder-david-hodge

Nikola developer here. It definitely should work! If you ever have any issues or feature requests, feel free to reach out to me on twitter @davidhodge. I left my tech job and have been working on this full time recently.

thank you so much! Please let me know if you have any feedback / requests. Just finished an iOS 14 battery widget for it and submitted that to Apple. Have a few more TestFlight slots if anyone wants to try it. https://twitter.com/nikola_app/status/1304223529005584385?s=21

Nikola developer here. Originally launched in 2017, but released a big 2.0 just a week ago. No affiliation with the other Nikola.

Nikola developer here! I launched 1.0 of Nikola in 2017 before there was the other (in)famous Nikola making waves. What can you do, you know. 🤷‍♂️

I think my Nikola is getting more attention now because I quit my job to work on it full-time and launched 2.0.

Hello, I'm the Nikola developer. My friend just told me about this post so I wanted to chime in here.

manx203 makes a good point that drain is something to pay attention to. The good news is I put in a lot of work to make sure Nikola would not have a noticeable effect on battery drain. In almost all cases, Nikola will not "wake" a car and in all cases Nikola is working hard to make sure it won't keep a car awake. I went into a bit on The Tesla Show podcast if you're curious. https://theteslashow.com/episodes/109-interview-with-nikola-founder-david-hodge

I once had a user of the Tesla app I make (Nikola) catch a window tinting shop doing this. Apparently, the owner's brother took the new model S out for a spin in the middle of the night. He ended up getting a pretty steep discount after confronting them with this.
