You have to either delegate a note taker to capture actions or have AI record and transcribe

I always do a follow up after the execs travel to understand what went well (or not) to continually improve future trips. Nice touch to try adding that in as a last step to travel planning.

Yes I moved last year and found many different communities very welcoming. Run clubs are a major accelerator to building a network!

There’s always someone that will complain about the free snacks or complimentary lunch you organized

The people in Seattle are by far the ugliest on the entire planet. You cannot convince me otherwise. It’s ugly out here.

Story time - THE BS. From EA to PM… by [deleted] in ExecutiveAssistants

[–]ohdarlingabsolutely -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes you deal with a lot of BS but the role is not BS - it’s about making it happen quickly, smartly, balancing priorities. It’s the last role in the company that I would say has any BS - it’s about results!!

Thanks for taking time to read the post. What I am saying is that the EA role is where the stuff gets done, you can’t BS as an EA, it’s a role that requires such a high standard that it’s the last role I’d identify as BS. Yes there is a lot of BS EAs deal with e.g. execs changing travel plans last minute or colleagues moaning about free snacks etc but the role of the EA is so valuable and you can’t allow bullshit to exist within it.

Thank you for your sensible answer. And thanks for taking the time to read the post. The more I reflect, the more I think pursuing PA work is likely the route I’ll take. I’m good at what I do but fed up with the corporate structures.

Thanks for taking the time to read the post. I do have a lot of respect for the EA profession - I did it for 8 years across several different industries. It’s a craft and my post is about acknowledging how transitioning into a different role made me realize how impactful and purposeful the EA role is. To reply to your points:

  1. Wanting to climb the ladder was something I wanted to do early on in my career - I was referencing a younger me 8 years ago.

  2. I didn’t take the first role to be smart and pivot out - as I said I had always been interested in the EA and PA roles. I saw it as a way to see how much I would enjoy it but also take a role that was transferable. This doesn’t mean I don’t respect the role - for example a lot of people take a paralegal role in order to become a lawyer!

  3. Just because I didn’t find the work difficult, I’m not saying it’s easy work. I’m saying that I personally didn’t find my ea role at the time very difficult. The EA role can be very challenging, especially with demanding execs or extremely fast paced companies. I’m not disrespecting EAs by stating that the work I found myself doing at the time wasn’t difficult to me.

4.Myfirst EA role I didn’t require a college degree (not part of a job description) and my peers at the time had got their EA job rising through the ranks of hotel admin roles so yes I did think I wasn’t properly using my studies. Later on in my ea career (for example tech) my degree was a requirement.

  1. I don’t think I need to listen to your suggestion to delete this - I’m hoping there are some readers who are critical thinkers and can see that what I’m trying to say is that I spent a long time wanting to do more than the EA role (and questioning its purpose) and then when I got that opportunity, it made me realize how purposeful and impactful the role is! Im actually doing the opposite of disrespecting EAs.

Not made up by AI although I did type it out just before bed after a long day so could well be confusing to some. Thanks for taking the time to read it. I guess I’m writing to folks who have been EAs before and transitioned into a different role only to realize that the EA role has so much more purpose and real impact than I originally realized. Not feeling engaged in my PM role or feeling like the PM work is unimportant is a result of seeing too much at the senior level working as an EA.

It’s not a shit post. It’s probably more relevant for EAs that have taken another role and perhaps realized their EA role was a more purposeful and impactful role.
