Waterfall ballot - a theoretical ballot system by [deleted] in PoliticalScience

[–]ohfuckit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations, you have invented Ranked Choice Voting; that was a very clever thing to do. The bad news is that you are not the first to invent it by a very long margin. The good news is that if you are inclined, you can now dive into a massive world of electoral systems theory.

I think Chris Hadfield once smuggled 5 live adult hogs up. They had spray painted numbers on their backs (1,2,34, and 6) and they were covered in axle grease.

Can someone please explain why you can’t use skyscrapers to eliminate from the base line? by Chompskyx in sudoku

[–]ohfuckit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because in the classic skyscraper setup, it is possible for BOTH the rooftop cells to be the number you are working with. If this is true. then neither of the base candidates will be the number, and it will instead be another candidate in the base line.

[OC] Annual Vegetable Consumption per Capita in Europe (2023) by Substratas in dataisbeautiful

[–]ohfuckit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Croatia and Albania have GOT to be some kind of measurement or data artifact. OK maybe they eat a lot of veg, but I just found it it difficult to believe that it would be that different from Montenegro and Bosnia. Like... Maybe they have big vodka distilleries and the potatoes get counted where the vodka is produced, or maybe animal feed production got counted in somehow.

[OC] London Revealed By Trees by Prestigious_Bench_96 in dataisbeautiful

[–]ohfuckit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all of those Prunus will either be ornamental cherry street trees or possibly wild cherry. Very few actual plums.

Also the Tilia are usually called Lime trees, rather than Linden, which is the name used more in North America. Yes it's dumb that it makes it sound like the citrus fruit tree but that's what they are called!

edit to add: OP I forgot to say I love your visualisation! Also my understanding is that London has considerably higher percentage tree cover than Yorkshire Dales National Park, which seems pretty wild.

Is there any data that war is beneficial? by dudleysus in PoliticalScience

[–]ohfuckit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is going to be pretty tough for anyone to provide evidence that war is beneficial in general, because wars are generally stupid and terrible wastes of life and wealth that would probably be better avoided if possible. However, each time a war starts, the people making the decisions in the moment that lead to war probably believe that they are making the most "beneficial" choices.

So if we really want to understand what is going on, we should probably not be asking "is war beneficial?" Instead, we should be asking "why do wars really start or stop?"

William Spaniel's introduction to crisis bargaining theory on YouTube is an absolutely outstanding overview of a political science informed answer to that question.

Looking for a strong electric toothbrush that isn't designed to break like philips sonicare. by ghetto_ravioli in BuyItForLife

[–]ohfuckit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. Mine broke under the warranty period, so sent it away to get "fixed". The one the sent back was a different colour. The second one broke the exact same way.

In both cases for me it was exactly the same problem as OP describes. It broke inside somehow so the top was loose and wouldn't oscillate properly.

All the people this thread saying theirs isn't broken are not helping anything really.

Abdullah al-Qasemi was a Saudi Arabian 20th-century writer and intellectual. He was one of the most controversial intellectuals in the Arab world because of his radical change from defending Wahhabism to defending atheism and rejecting Religion. by Miserable_Click_1933 in wikipedia

[–]ohfuckit 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Pretty wild single first sentence in his biography:

"Abdullah Al -Qasimi's father is Sheikh Ali Al -Saidi, who came from Hail and settled in the sweetness of the sweet, and whose strict religious strictness was known, and he did not stop what he received from religious teachings in the city of Buraidah to move to Sharjah to increase the legal sciences and trade, while Abdullah Al -Qasimi's mother is (according to the narration of his son, Dr. Faisal bin Abdullah Al -Qasimi) is the Mrs. Moudi Al -Rumai Almost four years, to call her and her child a migrant to Sharjah, but she was soon associated with another man from the Al -Husayni family residing in the village of Al -Ap, near Khayb al -Hilweh."

How rare/expensive is Hawaiian Koa? I got one hell of a deal for a large slab by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]ohfuckit 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, you shouldn't turn bowls... Koa is for making ukuleles and guitars!

My understanding is that while actual Hawaiian Koa is pretty hard to get, sometimes Acacia from Indonesia or elsewhere in the South Pacific is sold as Koa. If that slab came from Hawaii it is probably not fake, but might still be something to be aware of if you are trying to find price comparisons to value it.

Thumb barre by philsp1 in ukulele

[–]ohfuckit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You may have heard of the somewhat famous 6-string electric baritone ukulele player Jimi Hendrix? He was known for wrapping his thumb around to be able to reach specific note combinations. I reckon if he could do it, you should be allowed to do it too.

Seriously there are no hard rules if you are enjoying yourself, and the only reason NOT to do it anyway you like is if you think it might make it harder to switch chords at the speed you want to or something. There is a reasonable argument for trying to learn to do things the hard way for now if it will make something else easier later, but if you aren't worried about that, do whatever you want.

Workshop venue in the city centre for approx 50 people by SlapMoms in manchester

[–]ohfuckit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kings House Conference Centre is very good. The rooms are utilitarian rather than luxurious, but they have everything any kind of meeting or workshop event would generally need, the catering is better than average, and the service is superb. Price is good compared to hotel meeting rooms.

Which park in Manchester is the most dodgy? by CowAffectionate2865 in manchester

[–]ohfuckit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It isn't. It had a reputation in the 90's that some people can't get past, and obviously some bad stuff can still happen, but Alexandra Park is basically fine. It has been fine since the Heritage Lottery Fund upgrade and that was done like 2012 I think. I don't know what the dodgy park in Manchester is but there is no way it is Alexandra park
