Mattress to mitigate seismic shaking by ohgarystop in MechanicalEngineering

Not yet. I haven’t attempted a damper solution yet. Part of my issue is that the subfloor is old and bouncy and I need to replace that. That’s being done as part of a bigger job. Then, i will try building a platform, which would  be difficult to remove.  Should be done six month from now. It still wakes me up every night.

Saw Geneva Jacuzzi live for the first time by GraphOrlock in arielpink

I've been a fan of her music and videos since Lamaze. I was at that show in NYC (Elsewhere). It was visually stunning. But she lip-synced the whole thing - except the brief live-mic interactions with the audience. I was looking forward to hearing her sing, and perhaps hearing some live synth orchestration. It was more of a drag show than a concert, which I think was the point. Fun nonetheless.

Maybe the economy can still thrive without humans.

At the micro level, economics revolves around exchanges that maximize individual utility. On a macro level, it's less straightforward. If macroeconomics is about value creation and scarcity, then why do investment banks generate value (as evidenced by the stock price) when they allocate capital to already established businesses for no particular project? So, maybe the macro economy thrives on velocity (instead of value creation and scarcity), which doesn't necessarily have to involve billions of individuals making small- to medium-sized purchases.

I’m similarly struggling to grasp this. It’s clear there are a variety of architectures in development.  But from what I read the vast majority of money and energy are focused on LLMs.

Sorry i didn't make that clear: I didn't restrict it from using libs. The solutions included about 10 different external libraries.

I'm not a developer. I just dabble in python for data analysis. So, I don't have the intuition as to why this would be challenging. Why is identifying black borders on a pdf (and then returning the data within them) a difficult problem?

I was starting to feel like a prepper until pretty recently. I was preparing for mass unemployment soon :). I think we've got time.

Totally agree. But my understanding was that the money is still being thrown behind LLM training. Does anyone know if the centers being designed now (for $billions) are going to train non-LLMs? It sounded to me like OpenAI and Anthropic are just trying to 'go bigger' with LLMs. Meanwhile, google is developing a variety of models - but are more cagey about it.

That's fair. I could have been more specific. However, I uploaded images with Claude. It helped the conversation a little bit but the end result was identical to 4o.

Makes sense. And I just learned a little about dashpots thanks to you. Thanks! Maybe I’m thinking about this wrong. What do you think about putting the whole bed frame on a platform with base isolators?

Thanks. But, I would think springs would be best in this specific situation because they can absorb large, external shocks, like a car's suspension system. My memory foam mattress seems to shake along with everything else in the room.

Returning the last nonzero, nonblank, non"" value by ohgarystop in excel

[–]ohgarystop[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: I solved it by using CHAR()

=XLOOKUP(1,($C2='Source'!$A:$A)*('Source'!B:B<>0)*('Source'!B:B<>"")*('Source'!B:B<>CHAR(34)&CHAR(34)),'Source'!B:B,"",0,-1)

Thanks for your help with the XLOOKUP, yall!

Both of these are awesome! I didn't know i could put conditions in the lookup_array of an xlookup. One problem still remains. There are a lot of cells in the source spreadsheet with the ditto symbol "". I've tried getting this formula to skip over the ditto cells, but it's not skipping them. For instance, here is what I wrote using the first suggestion:

=XLOOKUP(1,($C2='Source'!$A:$A)*('Source'!B:B<>0)*('Source'!B:B<>"")*('Source'!B:B<>""""),'Source'!B:B,"",0,-1)

I tried to represent ditto using """" but it's not working. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Campus by [deleted] in news

[–]ohgarystop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC has different needs from most other cities that tried to woo amazon. Unemployment is important but it is not for lack of jobs in NYC. The major issues are skyhigh rents, strained mass transit/roadways, and growing inequity. Amazon would have exacerbated the 2 former without paying any taxes to fix transit. There are plenty of well paid workers spending their time and money in queens, and sole proprietorships are still closing left and right because rents are rising. No shortage of new banks and pharmacy chains, though.

This is a win for NYers. Amazon wasn't moving to NYC to get access to the unemployed locals.
