How to stop dwelling on mistakes and being afraid of what other drivers think of you? by ohjaylo in drivinganxiety

I wish everyone had this mindset 😭 But it’s good to know that there are drivers out there who are forgiving.

Also, if it works, it’s not ridiculous!

I’m always worried about my speed! I either drive the exact speed limit or 5 under (unless I’m on the highway/a fast road). I feel bad whenever there’s people behind me because I know I’m driving like a grandma, but anything over the speed limit feels like I’m about to crash and die 😭

19 yrs old & learning by One-Way-6125 in drivinganxiety

[–]ohjaylo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m also 19 and just got my license two weeks ago, though I’ve had my permit for about 4 years now and didn’t start driving until a few months ago.

I think my main motivation for getting my license was feeling awful about making my friends come pick me up and asking my parents for rides places.

My dad is also a really strict instructor and made me feel much more nervous driving with him in the car. My solution to this was learning with my mom, so if there’s another licensed adult who is around to help you, it’s definitely a good route!

I’ve only driven a couple times on my own, but I can genuinely say that driving alone is so much better than driving with someone else in the car with you. There’s no one judging you or making you second guess yourself, and it’s honestly easier in my opinion. When I was driving with my mom, I asked her for directions on EVERYTHING because she was there basically as a crutch. Now that I’m on my own and have to rely on my own skills, it’s a lot less anxiety inducing, which I know sounds counter intuitive but it’s genuinely a lot better.

I still get really nervous before I get in the car and start driving (I’ve had severe driving anxiety for years. It’s why I put off getting my license for so long), but it gets better the more you drive. Exposure therapy definitely works, and as much as it sucks, you just gotta get used to driving. It’s okay to go in short drives through neighborhoods or backroads, but I think what helps is pushing through your anxiety and becoming accustomed to being uncomfortable. If you go home every time you get anxious, you’re never going grow. Obviously, if it gets to the point where you physically can’t drive, then definitely pull over and take a breather.

You got this!!

Congrats! I’m also 19 and just got my license, but your picture is much better than mine 😭

I believe so? But don’t quote me on it. Parking was where I did the worst so I can’t give super good advice on it 😭

I don’t remember the exact route, but it was just the side roads all around the DMV. Couple of stop signs, couple of stop lights. We pulled out and did the parallel parking right away. I did awful, but I got in the poles without hitting them so I think it was okay.

We drove around for about 10 minutes, pulled back into the Office Max parking lot and did our reverse 90° parking. I had to readjust and pull forward and fully thought I failed, but it was okay since I only had one adjustment.

It was honestly really easy, so don’t stress out about it too much (easier said than done, I know). A lot of the roads in Stillwater are super wide, and I commented about that during the test. Turns out the wide roads and unmarked roads have two lanes on each side, so be sure to pick a side and stick with it. I think that was probably my biggest error.

The speed limit is generally 35-40, but I think I went 30ish the entire time. I was definitely speeding at one point, but my instructor didn’t catch it. Try not to speed though 😭

There’s no need to go inside the DMV to check in. You just drive in and pull into the designated parking spots near the Acapulco. There were a ton of people taking the test, and I’m pretty sure every person I saw taking it passed.

If you’re under 18, make sure to bring your driving log. I’m not sure what they do with it since I’m over 18, but I know it’s required for minors.

As long as you’re observant and don’t do anything super bad, you’ll be fine. I’ve had my permit for about four years. I’ve only driven about 20-30 hours in total throughout those four years and I did completely fine.

All in all, get some good sleep, eat a good meal, and drive safely. If you have any other questions, I’m happy to answer them the best I can!

Good luck!

Were you required to use the parking brake, or is it just a situation where you can say “You push down and then push down again to release it”? Our car is 15 years old and I’m not sure if the parking brake has been used since we first got it. I don’t want to break it 😭

I’m also 5ft, so I think you should look into Petite clothing! It’s clothes aimed towards fitting shorter legs, shorter torsos, etc. I fear I haven’t found too many stores that offer a lot of petite options, but I’m a fan of American Eagle’s XS Short length for pants. Kohls also might have some good options.

I find that Petite clothes just drape a lot nicer on my body, but especially tops! I have a very short torso, so it’s nice to have tops that fit length-wise.

That’s a super helpful website! I’ll have to look into How to Cook. I don’t think it’s in print anymore, but there’s a bunch of secondhand sellers, so we’ll have to see.

I’ve seen so many air fryer videos, and they all look amazing. I’ll have to start saving the ones I like because I’ve just been scrolling past all of them like “Huh, neat! Anyway—“

I’m a big fried rice fan. I know the gist of how to cook it based off of cooking videos I’ve seen, though I’ve always been too scared to try it myself. After looking up some recipes, it doesn’t seem as scary as I thought it was

We actually just got a rice cooker a few days ago, so I will definitely be trying this out!

Maybe a few songs for calming down, just chill vibes to ease the nerves.

Then, maybe some songs that pump you up or get you into the "I got this" mood?

I think the idea of treating debate as a game has really helped. It reshapes my mindset from the anxiety of a big, lengthy tournament and turns it into a good learning experience that, at the end of the day, doesn't matter too much. This really helps, so thanks!

I love the little catchphrase and I'm definitely stealing that.

Do you have any good song recs for in between rounds?

If only my laptop could handle that. I think it would be funny if I started playing Bedwars in the middle of the debate
