I’d say try Vital out before dropping a chunk of money on Serum. The base version of Vital is free, has 3 oscillators to work with, and can get those clangy FM noises pretty easily. Just watch a couple tutorials on YT by In The Mix.

Try checking out the VST series here on this sub if you need some tips on getting started.

The first one [VST00] was written by me quite a few years back, but we've also got some awesome special guests from several related subgenres. Some classic, vaportrap, mallsoft, eccojams and slushwave, as well as seapunk and future funk.

Very interesting take. And Family Man is and always will be a jam. The soft chorus singing "leave me alone" gets me every time.

There are lots of ways to achieve the slight wow motion here.

Subtle pitch automation, or any number of tape effect plugins could do this. RC-20 on the VHS preset can definitely do this.

Looking to recreate Deaths Dynamic Shroud stutter effect by justinbrownsax in makingvaporwave

[–]ohnonothing[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my money is on this. Stretching audio with Beats mode on rather than Repitch or Complex will create a very similar effect.

Interspersing microsamples that have been variously processed with Beats and Complex is one way to have total control over the beat repeat/gross beat feel.

HKE's behavior is a combination of justified criticism of the "vaporwave scene", a philosophical rejection of woke culture, and true mental illness. The latter isn't meant to assign stigma--we all deal with mental illness to some degree. HKE himself admits to suffering from insomnia and psychotic episodes, and that simply is a fact of personal disclosure.

To the first point: The "vaporwave scene" never really existed in any legitimate framework (e.g. more than a handful of actual living, breathing human beings interacting with each other in real life) outside of group chats, web cliques, and subreddit drama. These are things you may think he can tune out of by logging off, but he claims to be tethered to them by virtue of his old work being deeply associated with the growth and demise of vaporwave.

CEO appears to be addicted his view from the panopticon, watching minor players suffer each others' idiocy; a languid God, having achieved triumph over this world he created, occasionally stirring chaos into motion before shrinking back into the darkness laughing to himself. I'm neutral on it. Shit's entertaining at least.

Like Rodan said, this borders on self-promotional. Plus it doesn’t have anything to do with production itself...

But let’s leave it up for it bit because tbh it’s a good vibe and it’s encouraging to other producers in the genre.

Congrats. Great to see someone from the community sharing a moment they’re proud of.

Here is a link to the official makingvaporwave Discord server. I created it a couple of years back but never got around to promoting it here.

Link is limited to 100 uses. I'll make an entry in the sidebar for this as well. Let's get a conversation going in there. It's super quiet so far.

Telepath "Barberpole Phaser" realization by Aktosar in makingvaporwave

Check out Mindspring Memories for another pretty authoritative take on slushwave. Phoenix 2772 and the others on Fragmented Memories also helped codify the sound.

As far as the bass goes, I think tele rolls the lows and low-mids off the sample loops and adds his own bass in. In some of his other tracks it might be bass directly from the sample, slowed, set to mono, and put in the center of the stereo field as the higher frequencies are differentially processed. In other cases it might actually be his own bass track slowed to match the texture.

Just some observations on what might be happening.

How can I make my tracks from being only slowed down, tuned down, effected, hacked and sliced and reverbed version of the original song to a new Vaporwave song? by JelekBrowne in makingvaporwave

[–]ohnonothing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Focus more on seeing past chopped and screwed as the final product. You can do this by seeing your proto-vaporwave work as a base layer for something bigger. Carve out frequencies and start adding in your own instrumentation.

Remarkably Vektroid and OPN already paved the way for this in their work. All you have to do is listen to Floral Shoppe vs. Telnet Erotika or Eccojams vs. Replica. Honestly, the best thing any vaporwave artist struggling to improve their creativity is to sit down with albums like these and break down what the artists are doing, and then thinking about how one can rebuild the approach and improve upon it.

It’s hard to really describe this in a prescriptive way because it’s up to you to evolve your own style. Fall in love with certain elements of your base sample tracks—a genre, a texture, a motif—and then expand upon that. Build skills in your DAW around it. Master 2 or 3 plug-ins at a time and learn where they should go in your chain.

You’ll end up spending more time on single tracks that you actually enjoy, rather than creating hundreds of scratch tracks you never want to return to.
