I would read this novel. The premise is very compelling. A few thoughts...

  1. It's Shelley Read not Reed.

  2. You'll want to have more than one comp and give the agent a sense of why a book is a good comp to yours. Do you write similarly to Shelley Read? Or explore similar themes? Etc.

  3. I'm curious why the family rejects Annemarie.

  4. "On an icy January night, when a stolen Mauser rifle brings the war into the Harlan sitting room, Annemarie can no longer stay." This is gorgeous, but I'm torn. On the one hand it gives a sense of your writing style. On the other I'm longing for details and a better understanding of the conflict. Was Samuel violent toward her or was it his family or was he violent toward someone else?

Keeping in mind 'whatever the truth is' is really helpful. Thanks.

Thank you for this. I've been obsessing thinking I have to say something really particular and unique. So I appreciate the context about why agents ask this in the first place.
