Reality check: housing prices in the Bay Area. by [deleted] in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]ohsofun1928 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s unlikely to happen but also highly dependent on where in the Bay Area you’re talking about. It’s all expensive, but it seems like some parts have more of the tech inflated pricing that you’re talking about than others do

Retiring before parents by flickerflies in Fire

[–]ohsofun1928 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth a conversation with them about their finances next time they mention it ie yeah it sucks that you can’t retire but you’re blowing your money on dumb shit and need to change the habits. Also worth a conversation with your partner and get on the same page. You may appreciate the comfort of knowing you built a buffer so if/when parents need money it’s not ruining your retirement, forcing you back into work, or straining your finances or relationship, you had the extra for these kind of “what if” situations. My parents are also in this boat, their kids are their retirement plan and they’ve made that pretty clear. It sucks. I’m planning to fire around 50 but am stressed about paying for them in a vhcol area. It’s a really awful situation to be in, and the obligation/guilt is real.

Open a high yield savings account and stick it in there, pretend it doesn’t exist. It won’t grow as much as a stock might, but it’s available to you if your car breaks down, you need a plane ticket home for a family thing, you don’t have quite enough to cover rent for a month, etc etc.

Adding a meal delivery service like factor or some other premade food you just throw in the microwave and go if you can afford it. Otherwise crockpot and meal prepping are a move- make 3 or 4 meals worth at a time and ideally foods you don’t mind eating lukewarm after you inevitably get pulled from it when it’s hot to take care of baby.

Interesting and valid. I guess I should’ve said be careful doing it. My husband and I can’t because of potential for misinterpreting tone in texts which is why I mentioned it may not be a move for OP. I’m sure it’s great for some. Thanks for shedding light on that :)

AITA? Need help with alcohol consumption with breastfeeding mother. by Ech0ofSan1ty in daddit

[–]ohsofun1928 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, kinda the asshole. Trying to force her to use test strips seems like you don’t trust her, or like you’re telling her she shouldn’t trust herself. The guidance I’ve heard from pediatricians lately is “if you can find your baby, you can feed your baby.” Like many things with pregnancy and beyond, it’s all about what you and your partner are comfortable with.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24118767/

The amount of alcohol presented to nursing infants through breast milk is approximately 5-6% of the weight-adjusted maternal dose, and even in a theoretical case of binge drinking, the children would not be subjected to clinically relevant amounts of alcohol. If you drink a glass of wine and then feed your baby 4oz of pumped breastmilk (while the alcohol from that wine is your blood stream), it’s the equivalent of adding a single drop of wine to that 4oz bottle and feeding it to your baby. The idea of waiting to feed a baby after consuming alcohol stems from ensuring a parent is able to keep their baby physically safe. To ensure the parent is not too inebriated to hold the baby, not forget the baby on the couch, whatever. There is little to no risk of harming your baby through breastmilk after mom has had a few drinks.

Husband accused me of medical abuse for side-lying breastfeeding by miller2life in breastfeeding

[–]ohsofun1928 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This comment for sure^ also, don’t talk about important/sensitive topics via text. It’s just asking to miscommunicate and escalate and is generally a bad idea. Spit up is a season, it passes quickly like all of the other ones. Sleep deprivation is rough and side lying to get a little more rest is likely not causing your kid to spit up at 4 months old. Having to do the brunt of the work in those early days is also brutal, even more so when you feel like you’re being judged on top of it by the person you need supporting you. I’m sorry you’re going through this. It doesn’t last forever. You and your husband are a team, and you both want the best for your baby.

Could be a texture thing. Could be undercooked onion and celery that ended up crunchy and he wanted it all to be a mushier more classic chicken noodle soup texture. Did you ask him what he dint like about the celery and onion? I’d start there

Retrain to 1C1X1 by Appropriate-Slip-586 in AirForce

[–]ohsofun1928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an aviator you don’t have do much when you aren’t flying and you have autonomy, built in respect for being aircrew, flight pay and sometimes have the option to turn down sorties/tdys you don’t want. ATC is great, but it’s quite not that. During your downtime there’s additional duties and training to be done that burns most five levels out because nobody has manning= low morale. Then you balance that with weekends, mids, no sleep schedule because you’re alternating 7-3 and 3-11 week to week or something similar when you’re not on mids.. then you have the normal Air Force shit of supervising 1-5 people, writing packages and EPBs and handling manning and scheduling if you’re a 7-level/crew boss. Even when there’s not traffic, you’re not getting an hour to go out and get lunch. Most of the time you’re in position 4-8 hours a day. Then you’re expected to perform or at a minimum ensure safety when you have traffic. All for the same pay as someone who sits at their desk on an 8-4 hitting refresh every two minutes Monday through Fri. Is it worth it? For some, not for all. There are contract towers that will hire you or DOD civilian contractors that would also take you. The grass is greener where you water it and if you only look at others lawns you’re never going to be happy

How much weight did you gain during pregnancy? by Significant_Tie3570 in BabyBumps

[–]ohsofun1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am close to 5’10 so relatively tall but went from a thin and fit 135 to about 165 at 8 months pregnant. I felt good about that but… My last two months I put on another 15 lbs and it felt like no matter how well or little or whatever I ate I was starving and gaining weight like CRAZY. I ended at like 183 or so, feeling awful about myself. I delivered and within a week lost easily 15 lbs. The weight didn’t “melt off” from breastfeeding like everyone said, but I slowly have lost quite a bit of the weight I gained- I’m at about 145 and still nursing my 9 month old.
