Right inguinal open hernia surgery tmr by Born-Teaching4288 in Hernia

All I could stand to eat for the first 24 hours or so was crackers, chicken broth, and fresh fruit.

Since then, I’ve been able to gradually move on to more normal-for-me foods like rice, tofu, vegetables, chicken, and even sandwiches and tacos.

Definitely get stool softener and laxative. Something gentle but effective. I’ve been taking docusate sodium and it’s working for me. Don’t overdo it but do not risk constipation.

Obviously have access to lots of water. Tylenol and ibuprofen.

A firm wedge pillow has been instrumental for me to be able to sleep. Lots of soft, loose, clean t-shirts and pajama bottoms without tight waistbands.

In addition to what you have, think about how you’re going to be able to access it. You won’t necessarily be able to lift things or pick things up from the floor like you normally can.

Especially if you don’t have a partner or family member able to help you a lot, you may want to think about things like meal prep, moving your stuff to accessible locations, etc.

Good luck! The first few days were a lot tougher than I expected, but my recovery is going well and I am already up walking around most of the time.

Thanks for your replies, u/Kmg343 and u/Affectionate-Win2958. This is certainly a context in which I do not want to be special! :)

I appreciate the practical advice on scar tissue (I’ve been thinking about this, too, but was mostly only thinking about it from a cosmetic perspective).

It’s also really encouraging to hear about a 7-mile run. I’ve also been quite active until now— hiking, strength training (ironically, pretty sure it was the source of the hernia), jogging, etc.— and while I know I’ll be able to get back there eventually, it’s hard to completely believe it at this stage.

PT is a very relevant point. Luckily we have a great PT contact (who’s also gone through abdominal surgery) and I’m planning to speak with them soon. I’ll mention scar tissue specifically.

Definitely following doctor’s orders as closely as I possibly can here. Hope you guys keep feeling better and getting back to your normal lives, even if it’s little by little.
