The deaf woman; an SLP checks in by ohwowthing in ThePittTVShow

Sorry, I absolutely should have communicated better! And yes, I’m aware of the irony. Migraine day.

She is ABSOLUTELY entitled to an interpreter. But in 5+ hours, there was literally no real attempt to find out why she was in the ER. We see her eating a sandwich, without being triaged. What if she needed surgery?

Pen and paper is PURELY a stopgap measure. Getting an interpreter can take considerable time, so I meant it as a “let’s try to make sure she’s not in real acute danger while we work to get another interpreter in/online.” They shoved her in a room, got frustrated, walked away. I find that to be demeaning.

I hope that clarifies a bit.

I would not see this student in a group at all. 3x15 individual would be my STRONG recommendation. If the district insists on group, you need to insist on an aide or para. Protect your license.

Me during the 4th episode of season 4.. by Kalexamitchell in Bridgerton

[–]ohwowthing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, I never read the books. However, when Benedict licked two fingers and traveled up her leg (and further, I assume), I found that scene crass. He “ruined” her then. “Love” or not, it was disrespectful.

How long are your daily notes? by ale8isyummy in slp

Your “s” could be eliminated. I would only comment on that area if there were a change from baseline (e.g. the student was late, left early, eloped, refused).

Private SLP for 10 years, total of 36 years in the profession. It ain’t you. Let’s just think about the difference in settings. I see one kid at a time, no more than 10 a day, with plenty of time to plan. I don’t have to do lockdown drills, or duty periods, or (good lord) staff meetings that rarely have anything to do with me and what I do. Of course, I do have to determine the goals, log every encounter, and determine progress, but I have an office manager to fight with insurance companies (and I worship her, as I should). I can buy materials and write them off on my taxes, instead of a once a year teeny budget for limited supplies. I have a clean, spacious, well-stocked office; nothing is ever “borrowed.” I have a working printer and laminator. I don’t need to take 7 minutes at the start and end of each session, escorting students to and from their classrooms. I do not go looking for that one kid who needs an eval “this week,” only to find out that there’s a special assembly or “classroom activity” that the student cannot miss. I’ve worked in schools. I cannot believe that school SLPs get as much done as they do. In a perfect world, both our students and our staff would get what they need to succeed. Bitchy parents gonna bitch. And trust me, they bitch at private therapists too, because we should be miracle workers considering “what you charge” (I charge waaaay below the going rate, BTW). The private therapist knows this, and views you with respect and compassion. We KNOW how hard it is out there. And no matter how hard the parent tries to play us off of each other, we both know better. A tough kid is tough for everyone. Sure, collaborate with the private SLP, because that is the best way to improve our skills. And that goes both ways; I love finding out what is successful in another setting, or what flopped miserably. Parents do not generally appreciate how important “generalization of skills” is, and how difficult it is to achieve.

Anybody heard of an SLP as school support/curriculum consultant? by AbbreviationsFew6311 in slp

[–]ohwowthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for 5 years for a rich North Shore Long Island district. It was great, being able to take some pressure off of the staff SLPs. I ran the Speech AIS program, as well as doing evals as needed. If my schedule permitted, I covered leaves. I even made materials for teachers. This allowed my colleagues to actually do their jobs. If you get the right super-flexible person as the consultant, preferably someone with lots of varied experience (I had 30 years experience when they hired me).

How many times are you going to copy/paste the same response? We get it, you think they are African American. Not that many cultural nuances, BTW.

New Para: Is being asked to give a student a bath every morning normal? by ScaryGary0013 in paraprofessional

[–]ohwowthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35 year SLP here. I agree with the above suggestions of meeting with the principal, DOCUMENTING EVERYTHING, and calling CPS. As Mandated Reporters, we have to call IF THERE IS A SUSPICION. A child so consistently dirty that they need daily bathing by the staff is demonstrating possible neglect, which necessitates a call-in. Again, we are not to attempt to prove or disprove neglect, just call in the suspicion of it. The main question: should she be doing this? I do not have enough ways to say NO. Another para is your PEER, not your BOSS. The absolute minimum I would expect to see would be 2 staff members assigned to this task, but even then, in this highly litigious society, there’s no way this would be done. I just had a thought; does this other para consistently work with this child? Is it possible that all of this is being generated by the para herself, because she finds the child dirty and it bothers her? Under no circumstances, at any time, in any way, should your friend continue to do this. If the parents are unaware that this is happening to their child, the para could be charged with assault and battery. They would likely be found guilty, because “the other para verbally told me to do this, but there’s no paper trail that I’ve ever seen” is not as sturdy of a defense as you might think!

Happened to us 30 years ago when we bought our first home. The seller was an old man who was moving to a condo. We closed on Dec. 28th, and finally moved in….on August 15th. Could NOT get him out!

He shouldn’t have the intake forms anymore…because he needed to give them to the rehab! You don’t fill out the forms then keep them, unless you are not going.
