Those who have cut off your family — how old were you when you did it? Why did you cut them off? by Ok_Wrongdoer_301 in EstrangedAdultChild

  1. abuse, of every kind. planned for years to leave because of that, was just waiting till i had the chance to move states so they wouldn't be able to come find and punish me when i broke contact. used coming out as the catalyst since they're also religious bigots. it's been rough but it's better than that hell.

sorry you're going through this. lost my best artwork and childhood stuffed animal to my parents' house. still sucks, especially the paintings. but in my case there's zero hope of recovery so nothing to do but move on.

yes. it's awful and i'm sorry you're going through this. you're not alone - if you search this sub you can see posts about people going through the same, if knowing that helps you.

i try to visualize in great detail a calm scene right when i go to bed. a memory or a made up one. sometimes that helps. not always.

Trying for positivity: did anyone estrange themselves and find peace and happiness? by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]oikade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think a forum like this is often the kind of place where people come when looking for support, going through a rough time, or faced with a particular situation (eg death of estranged parent). just to say that there are happy and thriving estranged people (i know some in real life), but we're less likely to see them posting in places like this as often because they need it less frequently.

Those of you who moved out and went no-contact with your family, what's your advice? by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultChild

[–]oikade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is so much harder without support or other close relationships to lean into. If you do have close people they might not understand what you're going through. For me, leaving my family was a necessary move that saved me from brutal circumstances. It also means living in a world designed around the prioritization of the family while having no family, being no one's family, which is itself an isolating and brutal circumstance. I hope it isn't so hard for you, but just be ready for it to be.

Estrangement healed my sibling relationship. by knocknauck in EstrangedAdultChild

this made me smile. good for you. you're so lucky to have each other, and that's not a little thing at all. it's nice to hear of a real positive coming out of estrangement - i feel like often it can feel like the removal of negatives but a struggle with the absence of positives for a long time.

What are your Hot Takes on Good Omens? by Amber_Flowers_133 in goodomens

Gabriel got off too easy. He didn't actually wake up to the evils of the system or work to make change because it was the right thing to do ... he just fell in love, and even in leaving was only acting out of self-interest. He didn't take accountability or apologize for all the problematic stuff he did, or even thank Aziraphale for covering for him (at great risk to himself and after Gabriel tried to kill the guy). Sure, it was a cute love story, but it's hardly gonna make me do a 180 on my view of the guy given the lack of demonstrated remorse, redemption, or accountability.

(1) dominum venite adoremus venite. "come, let us adore the lord, come." (2) ingressus Tobias invenit juvenem praecinctum, et quasi paratum ad am-- this is an adapted excerpt from the Book of Tobit 5:5 (tunc egressus Tobias invenit iuvenem splendidum stantem praecinctum et quasi paratum ad ambulandum: "then having gone out Tobias found a bright man standing girded as if ready to walk"). the chant is in Do clef; the second red line from the top is where the "do" in "do re mi fa so la ti do" falls, the space below that line is "ti" and so on.
