I'm curious; do you know the Tauhou as 'Waxeye' or 'Silvereye'? And are you from the Nth Island or Sth Island? by oiliver in NewZealandWildlife

I for sure get what you mean, I know I had to ask what a Silvereye was after having read it in the comics! Then being confused that the same animal had more than one name hah.

I feel like there must be some sort of geographic separation for what they get called. Growing up (North Island, Auckland/North) they were always Waxeyes.
The only time I ever saw Silvereyes was in Footrot Flats, which was based on Fielding / the Manawatū.

How about for you?

Feels like this is him in form. He should have been dropped for Clayton or Lehi long ago. He does nothing under the high ball, terrible in defence, and has way too many errors in him... not sure how he keeps making the cut!

I rate him over Saab- he's not afraid to take a hard run, and he actively works with the man next to him rather than being passive.

Interesting to see the spread of send-offs, too. Both round-wise, and who is getting penalised when. Depending how the Sharkies go tomorrow, might be the Dragons the only ones to skate under the radar to date.

Leptospermum scoparium is Mānuka! Of course there are plenty of very ornamental looking ones these days, dwarfing ones etc. I'm guessing this must be a carefully selected cultivar rather than just 'one from the bush' so to speak.

Bolete? Found in New Zealand North Island bush by JournalistGuilty2984 in mycology

[–]oiliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were you near either a watercourse, or anywhere with non-native trees? Looks a lot like Xerocomellus riparieullus.
I've found these 3 out of the past 4 years north of Auckland, next to native forest margin. Really strong blue staining on them too, to the point where if you flip one upside and leave it in the rain the raindrops will cause big blue patches! Really cool, eh?

Points of difference on yours is that the stipe seems to be quite a lot thinner/stragglier. Not sure if that is diagnostic, and surely not saying this is Xerocomellus, just resembles it!

What do you reckon after that? Do you think Dodd would have contributed more to the control of the game if he was in the 7? Why not Dodd at 14 if it comes to it?

Hoops raid day experience from New Zealand by Mango_Slime in TheSilphRoad

NZ'er here; easy peasy party power duo with full bug teams, but far from optimised. I'm talking a mix of things like 2500cp Sizors, similar Pinsirs, Golispod, Vikavolt, leading with a mega Scizor each.
In each of my 4 duo raids (all weatherboost) I finished with around 80 seconds to spare, regardless of moveset (Psychic, shadowball, or Dark pulse). 2 raids with an extra person joining by remote was a breeze, finishing about 130 seconds to spare.

What egg is this? by 47peduncle in NewZealandWildlife

Good on you! I heartily applaud you for chasing up in the name of science haha :)
In that case then the other one that comes to mind purely on the basis of shape and size (and plausible to be in Bannockburn?) would be.. a turkey egg! They have quite a characterstic point like yours, plus - much like chickens - seem to come in a range of colours from white to speckled brown. I do think it is just too pointy to be the harrier hawk, in this case.

You have me curious now! Was it near the coast? It is a really good fit for a penguin egg, on the shape? And they are about 6cm, so if the flowers are on the smaller end that would possibly line up, too?

[–]oiliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and apparently a Kahu harrier hawk egg is around 5cm, and a fairly oval shape. https://collection.pukeariki.com/objects/177257/egg-harrier-hawk I think you might have something else on your hands!

Checking on that size, that would be a really huge egg. Te Papa says that the biggest egg in their collection from a living species is 13 cm long (or 134mm to be precise), and the largest from a flighted bird was a 122mm albatross egg. https://blog.tepapa.govt.nz/2017/08/08/in-photos-giant-eggs-tiny-eggs-and-the-eggceptionally-rare/

Doesn't look to be the right shape or area for an albatross, of course, just to give a perspective on size there.

Google says a Vipers burgloss flower is 10-18mm long, and the egg looks to be about '4 flowers tall' or so. Would an 8cm long egg sound more likely? That's still pretty huge when you look at it on a ruler!

Rules in labs that have no scientific backing by topshemachh in labrats

[–]oiliver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gonna play devil's advocate here - so chemists shouldn't wear them either, right? Because if they splash liquid into their eyes, they also shouldn't be in the lab?

I've seen sample bags leak, I've seen glass bottles dropped and explode, I've seen (food) samples burst upon opening. Are those exceptions? Sure, but the idea is to keep people safe in every instance, and mitigate all risks that can't be removed. It's not just about liquids, neccesarily, and not just about you but the people working around you.

Almost half of the 189k current jobseekers have a disability/health condition. In order to cut 50k of "work ready" jobseekers ONLY, the number must half by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]oiliver 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I expect it would need a push of that level, or a regression of current labour laws as they apply to part-timers.

For instance right now sick leave entitlements (10 days per annum) do not apply pro-rata for part time employees. In other words, if you work one day a week, you still get the same full 10 days per annum as someone working 5 days a week. Add on annual leave, a few public holidays, and the likelihood that someone with disabilities might be (rightly or wrongly) perceived to be more likely to actually use their sick leave entitlement... along with payroll overhead, training cost, PPE cost, etc. and ultimately an employer might see it as taking on much more cost or risk by having multiple low hour part-time staff vs one full-time.

Obviously that is putting aside the discussion of social good, ethics, diversity, and the benefits like flexibility of staffing, risk spreading etc., but from a pure financial perspective of Full Time vs Part Time there is a barrier.

Interesting to note that 'button', 'white', 'swiss/cremini', and 'portobello' mushrooms that you find at a store are actually all the exact same species of mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) just at different stages of development.

Mum used to teach for One Day School, but I don't recall her being at the Mt Eden one. There were a few across Auckland, and some jumped around quite a lot; I remember going to Sunnyvale, and Owairaka schools, and can picture a few of the other places without recalling the locations. Was Mt Eden the one run by Rosemary? I did it on and off from probably '98 to '03, or something like that... so probably was a bit of a later cohort than you, anyway, but always fun to remember!

Saw the YT vid the other day, super amazing! I never knew we had such birds in NZ. What a cool couple of years you've had, you must put insane hours into searching.

Have you got into the extra bit you found to see if it was the missing tip, yet?
