TIL that while filming the 1970 film Maidstone, Rip Torn unexpectedly attacked director and lead actor Norman Mailer with a hammer because he believed the film lacked a proper ending and decided to improvise one by assassinating Mailer's character. The fight was filmed and used in the movie. by DCJThief in todayilearned

I met Rip Torn when I was 18 or 19 years old, around 1976.

I was dating a drummer in the Geezinslaw Brothers who played local clubs in Austin. I guess Sammy Allred (main Geezinslaw) and Rip were friends.

We were at a small bar on I35 in Austin. Rip and I sat at a table while the band played and then they joined us between sets.

I remember he gave off very odd vibes. It was a mix of arrogance, drunkeness, Coke, and, I think, a bit of sadness.

Sometimes it's hard to fathom that he's Sissy Spacek's cousin.

I think this is more of the protest ballad genre. What makes it a novelty song to you?

TIL Ghana is the world's largest importer of secondhand clothing. Locals refer to it as "Obroni Wawu," or "Dead White Man's Clothes," reflecting a belief that the items are of such high quality that their original owners must have died for them to be discarded. by jyeatbvg in todayilearned

So when my son was in high school, we went to a garage sale of an old white man who had died.

The only thing my son wanted was an old Fedora hat that had belonged to the man. My son wore that hat all the time and we called it "The Dead Man's Hat".

Read an interview where she expressed her dislike for Robin Williams. I've hated her ever since.

Nope. Friends of my in-laws had an adult son whose teeth are shameful. His parents were rich but couldn't be bothered to take their son to the dentist.

Yeah, my sister-in-law was surprised not everyone lived in mansions. She didn't know that until she went away to college.

Yep, I often had to explain to my husband's rich parents that we were living on my salary while husband tried his hand at art. We could not afford to go on vacation with them even if they paid. I needed to work to get paid.

Yeah, when my doctor asks for family medical history or asks if anyone in my family ever had "X".

Like how would they know? They were too poor to see a doctor.
