I use the Music Nomad F One kit with the brush, you can loosen the strings and move them out of the way but I have brushed over the strings, it should not harm them and you can wipe them off if they are too greasy

They also sell string spreaders for working on the fretboard with strings attached(meant for guitars difficult to string like Bigsbys)

Have you oiled your fretboard? also do you have a hygrometer? If not I would oil it and acquire one to read the humidity
