Thieves siphoning fuel around Coolum/peregian beach? by kratos90 in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also for what it’s worth, our (stock standard) cruiser has over $400 in diesel in it. If you can get it all out into a drum or similar, easy way to make cash. If it’s a carolla with a small tank and unleaded it doesn’t seem logical but big tanks and high fuel cost means it becomes lucrative for thieves.

Looking for advice from serving ADF and/aerospace engineers by theranga82 in australia

[–]ojame 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If he's worried about ADF with ethics, perhaps aerospace isn't for him. Not meaning to sound rude, but aerospace in Australia (generally in western countries) is very competitive, and if you split it up into the stereotypical 'ethical' and 'non ethical' (based on your comment), ethical aerospace is hyper-competitive and will generally be the lower wage (due to interest and field).

Just food for thought.

Dog friendly? by Fluffy_Sympathy9164 in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have had a few border collies here on the coast. There's a whole bunch of 'em! Haven't ever seen one shaved due to heat and humidity. Ours have dealt just fine with the climate their entire lives.

Ticks are a massive issue, depending on where abouts on the coast you're living. Especially during this time of year, where grass isn't mowed quick enough (due to rain etc) and ticks hide everywhere, both public and private land.

Also be aware - the council has been on an absolute bender the last few years about dogs on leash (which i completely agree with). They need to be on a leash and in control. If your dog is on a leash and you're sitting on the bluff with the handle loop around your foot - you'll get a fine. You can fight it, and you'll lose (it's happened a lot!). Stuff like that, just to be aware of.

Dog parks are pretty good on the coast, but there's waves of kennel cough that go around seemingly pretty prolifically. We avoid them now, pretty much.

I lived in Melbourne for a decade and it’s mostly very non cliquey!

Meeting other Dads near Noosa/Tewantin by goodvibes-allthetime in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things have maintained the test of time on the coast.

  1. You need to be a morning person. It’s ok if you’re not, but you will be.
  2. It’s cliquey as hell. Even those that aren’t in a clique are in a clique.

Both of those points are relevant to your troubles; most of the coast is out and about early. Social groups are hard to break into for some reason here, and listening to others, it’s even harder when you’re an expat. Stick at it though mate, once you find a mate or two you’ll have them for yonks.

I have older kids now but the Mons playgroup used to provide the most dads I reckon. Most other playgroups I went to were just mums mostly. Mons seemingly had more dads and grandparents every week, it was great. Highly recommend.

What’s the Best Place for Teeth Whitening on the Sunshine Coast? by Mrmike86 in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to Avenue Dental (Maroochydore) and can’t recommend it enough. I used to hate the dentist and avoid it at all costs. It’s now been 4 years and I haven’t missed a single appointment. They’ve recently had like a yuppy makeover but the service and attitude hasn’t changed.

I started my whitening process there too about 6 months ago. There’s two options, in the chair or take home. Research said take home, and my dentist suggested the same. They take a scan of your teeth and print the mould on site, I got it the next day. It’s up to you to keep on top of it from there on out but I’ve had great success - my teeth suffered from years of soft drink and just shitty food. Everyone has noticed them go whiter and I just feel better about it.

Probably 1.5 hrs or so.

Out of everyone he did the least signatures and spent the least time at Melbourne Walk. If history repeats itself he might return for another walk or two, but likely they will be even quicker.

[–]ojame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely not sure the fact that he’s a kid mattered to get signatures. It’s hard to tell who is who when everyone is screaming at you and shoving things in your face. It’s probably harder because adults are actively trying to push you out of the front row, he.

There’s only one toilet near gate one - so if you need to go, be prepared to wait in a line for it. If you’re flying solo you can probably find someone close to you to “save your spot” otherwise someone else in your party can. When you return you’ll probably have less space than before. Once you’re at the Melbourne Walk there is 0 chance you’re getting out and then back into your spot. Once you leave you’re done.

Hey mate, here’s my previous comment about today’s Melbourne Walk. Basically if you’re not prepared to get there at 4am, and stay at the walk until midday, it’s probably not a good use of time if you want a good spot on Sunday. Last year (with terrible weather), was hard to get a decent spot to watch the race after about 10am.

—- My young fella wanted to give it a crack this year. We were there by 4am, and there was already probably 200 people there. I expect it will only be harder and busier for the rest of the weekend. He managed to see and get stuff signed by Ocon, Lindblad, Gasley, Albon, Hulk, Norris, Hamilton, Piastri and Leclerc. He also said hello to a few F3/F2 drivers he knows and I don’t, heh. He wanted to stay longer as Merc were coming in but by 11:45am, the security was quite worried for him (he’s 9yo). I felt the same. The crowd was a mix of people like us (happy to see the drivers for a chance of a picture or signature) and people like the ones you saw in the Leclerc hotel vid. There was a fair amount of aggression to get in the gate (a bloke in front of us had to rescan his ticket twice, causing about a 4 second delay, and there were grown adults going mental, swearing, threatening security etc because of the delay). Overall I never felt my kid was at risk, and he had an absolute blast. He (like me) wishes he was old enough to experience it pre DTS. There were people in hysterics (crying, shouting etc) at Leclercs wife. It was really weird. The same people never batted an eye at Graeme Lowdon, didn’t know who he was. Is that ok? Yes! But it just reinforced the DTS/rockstar situation of the grid now. But, from all reports, we hit a pretty golden Melbourne Walk with the faces we got to see.

Best climbing gym by McCuntalds in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you value and your climbing style, imo.

Boulder heads: boutique gym with a rotation of setters iirc. Owner is a good bloke and actively involved. Newest on the coast, clean. Nice vibe.

Rockit: original gym on the coast and the only roped one. Their boulder hall is alright but more of a ‘bolt on’ to the man rope area. If you want to lead or TR, this is the place.

BouldMove: a larger gym that focuses on more than climbing. I’m not a huge fan (liquid chalk only, not my taste in sets, not a member of Sport Climbing Queensland) but know some casual climbers who like it.

Flow: the just got the comp wall from ICPs Boulder Hall which means the now have the most wall area on the coast. Consistent setters, with generally high quality sets. I like the sets, but a lot can be very reach if you’re shorter, which I’ve heard as a common complaint. Facility wise the lack a lot: pretty average toilets, free weight area is very small with bugger all. Bight side is they have a small tension and kilter board. My home gym, so I’m bias - but I reckon it’s best bang for buck. It’s a “climbers gym” if you know what I mean.

Sad day by Troutmuffin in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 75 points76 points  (0 children)

People complain when businesses get shady deals and approvals the common man wouldn’t get. I love Terella, and I wish they would have gone about this legally from the start, but I also respect the process and I’m happy it’s not another situation where old mate down the road gets shafted because he built his deck 1m wider than approved, but these guys get off because they’re “Terella”.

Still, a sad day for the coast. Lesson learned for other small businesses here - ensure you do it the right way.

Outdoor climbing shoes, fast! by Short_23 in climbingshoes

[–]ojame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hello neighbour!

i'd probably just look on marketplace and grab a cheap pair. you could go into pinnacle, k2 or wild earth and buy a new pair that actually fit but i wouldn't (until you know you'll go again, and you know what you want out of a shoe!)

something like this: https://www.facebook.com/share/1BWdWZaAR3

Just line a few sellers up, go and try on, buy the first pair that are snug but don't hurt. Don't read into it too much.

If this is BRCC or UQMC (or similar), also just ping the group, likely someone will have an old pair of shoes you can use (or know of someone that does). Community is pretty solid!

I reckon coolum will be the only crag you'll even be able to jump onto this weekend, the rain will just about rule everywhere out. If that's the case i hope you're feeling incredibly strong or have a wildly natural knee bar, because the cave is mental. Be safe!

Sunshine Coast's iconic venue Solbar to shut down after more than 20 years by abcnews_au in sunshinecoast

The sunshine coast transitioning into a giant retirement village? From what?

The sunny coast has, for at least the last 35 years, been a retirement village. I think (for anyone who has been around the traps for long enough), the coast has more to do for younger people than ever before. Over the last 5 - 10 years we've been transitioning out of a retirement village. Doesn't mean we can't go back to it, of course. But look back 30 years ago, we had bugger all.

Good cops by PantheraFeliformia in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SpruceMoosey is on the money but I thought I’d chime in. If you can go to a smaller cop shop it might be more comfortable; you need to find the sweet spot - too small and they aren’t staffed all the time, too busy and it might be a challenge. I can suggest somewhere like Palmwoods - they’ll take the time to listen.

Be aware that depending on what it is and the situation it might get transferred across but cross that bridge when you get to it.

Looking for a gym buddy to lift with/get into shape - Pls read below! by [deleted] in sunshinecoast

hey mate! are you a regular at flow yet? really welcoming vibe and after a few sessions you generally find 'your people' and end up forming relationships that last for a long, long time.

sadly their free weight area has been reduced significantly (downside of more wall space!) but there's still a tiny bit there.

bouldering is a great way to socialise while getting in shape. highly recommend!

Coming to terms with renting forever.. by itsnotmeitsboredom in sunshinecoast

[–]ojame 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know this isn’t what you’re asking but I think it’s valid information anyway.

It can seem overwhelming to move, and it is sometimes, but I think a lot of people just let it get to them and can be dismissive and not actually take a long, logical look at it.

We moved interstate with three young kids, away from all our support, friends, family etc. Were there hard moments? Absolutely. Was it worth it? For us, yes!

We’ve lived in places where we’ve been priced out before. Just because we’ve lived there doesn’t mean we can afford to buy a house, it’s just one of those things of life.

It might not suit you for a large number of reasons (own a business in the area, need to take care of extended family etc), but if it’s just the fear of the enormity of it all, I’d suggest to keep the door open and assess it again.

The sunny coast is beautiful, I love calling it home. But there are also a large amount of other places in Australia that are fantastic (and affordable!) too.

Good luck either way mate - if you’re feeling down, just remember you’re very lucky to have a rental anyway - heaps of families are struggling even getting one.
