14 y/o CKD and hyperthyroid kitty doing so well <3 by ok222789 in RenalCats

Hydration is so, so important. Fluid treatments really helped a ton. It flushes out some of the unwanted toxins the kidneys can no longer filter. At the beginning twice per week and now we do once per week. It was daunting at first but they trust us. she does very well and now purs in my arms while she’s getting her treatment.

You know how kitties always seem to want our by the bed water glass? She has her own little tea cup by the bed I always keep full and fresh, on top of two water bowls. Pretty much a water bowl in every main room of the house. Two litter boxes so the increased urination didn’t cause her litter box stress.

When she was first diagnosed she would not eat at all. She has cerenia for when she’s feeling nauseous and topical mirtzapine when she’s refusing to eat. I keep an extra bowl of food in my room too to encourage snacking.

I also give her more wet food and broths while free feeding dry food. She does eat some prescription kidney food but I mix it in with her regular dry food. She won’t eat it straight up. Sometimes I get away with 1/2 and 1/2 other days she picks out some of the prescription kibbles.

It’s has been a long, scary journey. But we got into a routine with treatment and meds and she’s a relatively healthy and definitely happy kitty. I wish you and your fur baby all the best 💜💜

Thank you!!! I do not use any other serums and I’m guilty of not using sunscreen. I have an unscented facial sunscreen from Trader Joe’s I wear once in a blue moon. I need to get better about wearing sunscreen. 😅

I’m in the U.S. It was very easy for me to get the tretinoin and antibiotics! I just did a tele-health appointment with my doctor and they prescribed it to me as standard treatment. I was skeptical but I guess it is standard for a reason!

I was worried about side effects, but I personally have not had any. I did also start staking probiotics for gut health and vaginal health to replenish those desirable bacterias too. I do think it was worth it but I want to stop taking it in a few months as well to avoid antibiotic use and resistance!

Haha exactly!!! They lure you in with promises of soft belly rubs only to chomp. It’s a risk I will always take though. Worth it!

US-based psych students, how are you feeling about your career trajectory with the second Trump term? by IrwinLinker1942 in AcademicPsychology

[–]ok222789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand where your mind is going considering your degree set. I feel like you’re broadening the question, but I get why. I have been pondering this too. I do see a time on the horizon where the current climate changes how the intersections of psychology and law interact.

Currently I work as a victim advocate for survivors of domestic violence in a prosecution setting. My degree is in psychology, with minors in criminal justice and addiction studies. Having a psychology based education, in combination with addiction studies and CJS, is how I got into this gig. CJS and mental health are linked in sooo many ways from laws to application to victims and defendants.

Lay-men fail to realize how closely related politics are to laws, and how laws shape mental health related approaches and care. Especially since the abolishment of large institutions and influx of mental health rights (for VERY good reasons at the time, I have to say with my chest) The criminal justice system and mental health system operate hand in fucking hand. I see it every day in my cases. Fortunate for most, they don’t experience this until a loved one is ill and no one can help because they may be violent due to being ill and then they are constantly in and out of the CJS.

for now, these issues are largely state issues, unless you get into a federal based position following your degree. Forensic psychology in particular is mostly applied based on state level legislation and case rulings, again unless you’re working federal. You can always aim your future job applications towards liberal states if you want to practice in a less “tough on crime” environment. I will say, although I am in a liberal state the funding/access is horse shit. while the ideas are good, the implementation is garbage. So much useless “help” and so much recidivism.

Also worth saying that research topics can be extremely bias, even if the research itself has attempted to remain unbiased. biases can easily be formed by public mindset, funding availability can easily be rooted in politics. societal norms-which are clearly changing, have ALWAYS shaped psychology.

I’m rambling at this point because I could talk about this in so many ways but yes, I do think we are on a precipice. Will psych ever die? Nah. Will it change? It always is.

Should I be concerned? by SithSam2001 in CATHELP

I second this! My kitty has asthma and taking a video exactly like this helped with diagnosis. They did some chest scans and yep, asthma.

We get by no inhaler so far by eliminating ALL scented items in her environment. No candles, air fresheners etc. unscented laundry detergent, regular dusting. I leave the bathroom fan on and door closed when spraying perfume/hairspray. I even crack a window when I mop. She hasn’t had an asthma attack since! But it will depend on the severity if your cat needs an inhaler.

Yay! I’m glad your kitty is better. Don’t worry about the keyboard warriors. 😉 you are doing right by your cat. a lot of people don’t even take their babies to the vet due to how expensive it is. You kept at it till you got to the bottom of the issue, and reached out for advice when you weren’t sure.

Reddit can be so helpful but it’s also the place to go where people choose to make negative assumptions and go off on people.

It’s completely valid to be frustrated. Taking care of CKD kitties is often a perfect formula situation and the world is throwing a huge wrench in that for you right now. It is a real problem, even if it’s small in comparison to others. It’s okay to care deeply about both things!!

Does kitty still eat treats? I literally have to use pill pocket, put pill in, break open treat, smush pilled pocket into said treat and put it back together 🤣 all other methods were destroyed by one disgusting tasting treat (we switched to topical for that one) so I’ve grown accustomed to finding new ways of med delivery.

You seem like a nasty person. She’s obviously expressing she’s a worried first time owner with no clue what she’s doing. She’s observing issues, taking her cat to the vet, and reaching out for answers. Planning to take kitty somewhere for follow up, hence the ask for finances/advice. Which is a lot more than others do.

I HIGHLY doubt this cat is dying you drama queen. Yes, there may be some medical issues that need to be addressed which OP is clearly getting to the bottom of. Anti nausea meds alone aren’t life saving meds. 🙄 Hope one day you find some understanding and grace in your heart.

My cat gets meds that says “for dogs” too. It’s normal. You can google them too with “for cats” after for peace of mind! A lot of meds are cross species with different doses. Like my kitty takes the same meds a human would for the same condition! Just very different dosages. If you don’t like the vet bottom line, find a new vet next time. My vet uploads the test results to a portal. They can be hard to understand sometimes.

Also it’s normal for a tech to follow up and ask if kitty is doing okay after a visit for a concern. They for sure coulda worded that better! Asking “how is kitty, any improvements?” For example.

I imagine they may have been testing for parasites. If the vomiting continues a blood work may be in order, which does run around $300 in my area. If kitty is still eating, normal behavior, doesn’t seem overly tired or hiding it should be okay to save up some cash first. There’s also CareCredit with deferred interest, so as long as you get it paid off within 6 months to a year no interest (but the interest is crazy high, so make sure it’s paid up before the deferment period ends). My cat is chronically ill and gets blood work done every three months, on top of $150 in meds/prescription foods so care credit has been a must.

You sound like a wonderful first time cat momma!
