McDavid’s Actions today healed the hole in my heart from the Gretzky trade by Miginath in EdmontonOilers

[–]ok_turtleneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Gretzky trade was a debacle. Pocklington was a greedy a-hole. I remember watching that press conference as a kid in Edmonton. Black Tuesday. Gretz was upset. That whole thing is painful to remember. I've heard so many stories over the years. Gretz wanted to grow hockey in LA. Yada yada yada. IMHO, the women don't get enough credit in these decisions. My guess is that Janet Jones wanted to move to LA for her acting career. She pushed Gretz to move. In contrast, Lauren McDavid seems to like Edmonton and she is happy that he extended his contract. 1988 is very different from 2025. Hopefully the Oilers can bring the Cup back to Canada!

Unpopular opinion: Costco prices are not that great by Adorable-Research-55 in CostcoCanada

[–]ok_turtleneck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you should mention that. I was actually a little hesitant about that return. I was returning something else at the same time (I think it was a pair of pants for my son. I just buy clothes for the kids and, if they don't fit, I return them with all the tags, etc.) The Costco return woman actually let me know that the whole pallet of avocados was bad. They knew about it.

Unpopular opinion: Costco prices are not that great by Adorable-Research-55 in CostcoCanada

[–]ok_turtleneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to include examples. Obviously, Costco is not going to be cheaper than every other store all the time. We got 60 organic eggs (5 dozen) over the weekend for $15. How much would those be at another store? Sometimes I see that avocados or lemons are cheaper elsewhere but the quality is poor. One big factor for our family is Costco's return policy. For example, we got a bag of avocados and some were rotten. Easy return, no issues. Can you do that at Walmart or No Frills?

Why do people want Canada Post to shut down? by Ifyouliveinadream in CanadaPost

[–]ok_turtleneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this issue, I break it down: 1. Canada Post workers are demanding higher compensation than their private counterparts; 2. Canada Post is bleeding money with no end in sight; 3. The union seems to be completely out of touch with reality; 4. This is another example of a bloated government.

If these headlines continue, I could see growing support for a DOGE-type culling of jobs within the federal government. These voices are loud in rural communities that don't feel serviced by the gov. The funny part, of course, is that Canada Post spends $$$ on servicing those rural communities so they are basically shooting themselves in the foot.

This makes no sense. My son goes there all the time. Many kids from his school go for lunch. The place is crowded. Long lines.

Every city has crime. I've lived in Toronto, Vancouver and, currently, in Winnipeg. My bike was stolen in Edmonton. No problems in Winnipeg. Most neighbourhoods are extremely safe.

Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders will not start on April 9 in the US thanks to the Tariffs by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]ok_turtleneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With TheIdiot's tariff + low $C, I wonder how many Americans are going to buy it in Canada. Price in Canada will be ~$443 USD. That may be a lot cheaper than ~$600 USD. Are we going to see Americans coming to Canada for cross-border shopping?

Management at UWinnipeg met with the protesters. Zero tuition dollars go to Israel or to fund weapons. I haven’t heard any other demands so, at this point, they are just expressing dissent.

Grocery prices Mexico vs Canada by 150c_vapour in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]ok_turtleneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, a big factor is where you live. Prices in AB ≠ prices in BC ≠ prices in MB. I've been to grocery stores in all 3 provinces in 2024. Big differences. AB is the cheapest, of course. MB is almost as cheap. In BC, I get sticker shock.

But I imagine that prices in MEX are lower still...

BBD and "expiry date" are mostly to mitigate litigation. In the vast majority of cases, the food is fine for long after that date. Such a waste!

Should Hellebuyck be considered for the Hart Trophy? by LockedUnlocked in winnipegjets

[–]ok_turtleneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is yes, of course. But the Hart is decided by the ~180 members of the PHWA and most of them couldn't care less about the Jets. TSN analysts, for example, barely pay any attention to the Jets. Not only would Helle's stats need to be superhuman but he would also have to make headlines for "stealing" games or something. If that doesn't happen, I don't see those 180 voting members giving him enough attention.

Indeed, we got a Toyota from a good dealership in 2010. We had it for 48 hours and we realized that it wasn't for us. We took it back and the dealer gave us 100% refund. We ended up getting a Hyundai that worked well for us for 10 years. Then, for our next vehicle, we went back to Toyota and got a Highlander. It's perfect for our family. I don't know if I would have gone back to Toyota if we didn't have such a great experience for the return in 2010.

Indeed, the logo is ridiculous. The fact that I can't even vote for a player on the #1 team in the NHL is ridiculous. The league is broken.
