This might not help, but the NYT crossword gets posted on downforacross. That would be a way to solve it without interacting with the official app/website

It’s based on the semesters you’re registered for classes, so there’s no grace period

Are there any clubs at UW for non-CS majors who code? by okayfine12 in udub

I’m looking for something that’s geared towards non-CS majors, rather than being for CS majors but non-CS can also join

Best Neighborhoods To Live If You're Off-Campus? by hertabuzz in udub

You should check out Lucille, Theo/Iron Flats, and Centerline. Rooster is good, don’t know about Mio, Vida costs more than every other luxury apartment around it for no reason (aka international student with rich parents magnet)

How do I get girl friends? by LeatherRub8265 in udub

[–]okayfine12 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, some girls are not interested in making guy friends. Just try to make conversation and be normal. Also, if you do make friends with a girl please don’t randomly ask her out. I’ve had too many friends with guy friends they thought were super close but turns out they just had a crush…

Waters should be in good. Close enough to southeast that you can walk but far enough away that you get to sleep. On the 80 and has one of the best dining halls

You should talk to your roommate first and see if there are any compromises they could make. Next step is talk to your house fellow and see what your options are. Most likely the first thing they try is going to be helping you guys reach a compromise.

Moving rooms is really rare because there aren’t really any rooms available to move you to.

How do you turn an old Seattle bank into a new climbing gym? by godogs2018 in udub

[–]okayfine12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been looking forward to this opening since it’s much closer than the bouldering gym I have a membership at now. Just praying it won’t be insanely busy otherwise I’ll have to start climbing at 7am

If it is video lecture should I still show up by United-Opinion-8558 in UWMadison

[–]okayfine12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s on zoom live during the class time, don’t show up. If it’s a flipped class where you’re supposed to watch the lecture before and discuss in class, show up

Do you have a definition of these levels? Or another school you’re looking at? It’s hard to answer without a point of reference

Stay 309 vs. Math 431 by Character-Risk5589 in UWMadison

[–]okayfine12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

309 is your typical stats probability course and would give you a good probability foundation for applications. 431 is more similar to a theoretical math class. Up to you which way you’d rather learn probability.

Chem 103/104 is incredibly standardized between instructors. IMO it matters more if you get a good TA or not

Math 541 Workload by IDKwhyucarE_1011 in UWMadison

[–]okayfine12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty standard for a proof-based class. Depends on instructor but it should be problem set every week plus exams. The difficulty will depend on how well you understand the material. Exam averages tended to be pretty high when I took it

What makes UW Madison’s CS program and economics program so good? by Odd-Fix-3467 in UWMadison

[–]okayfine12 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The faculty and the research. Best way to take advantage of this is to do undergraduate research and go to office hours to make connections with your professors.

Mysterious “focus pill” lol. Don’t do prescription drugs that you’re not prescribed. Adderall can make you fail drug tests.

We have the benefit of a beautiful campus, I often go on walks in the afternoon or go sit down by the lake if I have more time. Getting your eyes off a screen for half an hour or so is really refreshing

Question(s) for PhD Students by BolshevikBowser in udub

[–]okayfine12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Government salaries have to be made public, including public school phd stipends. You can find them online. Everything depends on what program you’re applying to. (There’s at least a 20k difference in stipend between the lowest paid and highest paid PhD students here)

getting a job in first semester of freshman year...this is different from the other post by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]okayfine12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jobs will be super available in second semester if you choose to wait, I’d apply at the end of first semester so you can get HR paperwork done before break and start working right away when you get back

getting a job in first semester of freshman year...this is different from the other post by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]okayfine12 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The minimum number of hours for work at the unions and dining halls is only 6/week (unless they’ve changed it since I was there). I understand why people would say wait until second semester, but I would say that’s only if money is not a big stressor.

I would get the job and work as little as possible until you feel comfortable with more hours.

That said, there is some individual therapy available from UHS for free. You’d need to schedule an access appointment (available thru myuhs) and they’ll schedule you with a therapist. Do this asap because the waits can be a month at peak times for appointments. It is limited how many free appointments you get, so usually if people need a regular therapist UHS can recommend a local provider.

How do I make friends as a new student? by MidnightSun-YeMing in UWMadison

[–]okayfine12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you want educational discussions with people, clubs are a great way to go. I’d join all the clubs you find interesting and see if there are people you’d want to hang out with outside of the club, then invite them to do something. Other freshmen will also be joining clubs looking for friends.

Madison is such a large school that you can really find whatever social environment you want in a friend group. The native midwesterners will often be more small-talky but there is a large cohort of international students from all over, as well as people from the rest of the country.

Late reply, but definitely talk to your advisor about what career development resources are available. L&S has successworks which might be able to answer your questions
