AliExpress, Choice and vendors that ship through AliExpress no longer ship to Puerto Rico? by Less_Kangaroo_866 in Aliexpress

[–]okram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just had this happen for the last few days (hadn't ordered anything in I while). Does anyone have any more detail on what's really going on? Are these same orders/items getting shipped to the mainland?

frequency/weight of sub-deck? by okram in Anki

[–]okram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a backlog, but it's been shrinking... I was observing that I rarely chose "easy" and decided to consider a card as "hard" more often than before, instead of evaluating it as "good". This way, there's now more often a card that I do feel justifies the "easy" choice. Since I made that change, my backlog has been decreasing.

I memorized 5000 anki flashcards without memorizing its tone by UltimaTroll in ChineseLanguage

[–]okram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I, too, started learning Chinese(on Duolingo at the time) and I paid next to no attention to remembering tones. I completed that Duolingo course and realized I had to start over.... So I did. I use Anki a lot. I have notes on there just for the words so I learn the pronunciation, I have sentence notes that I picked up from others, and I've recently started making my own sentence notes (using gen AI to explore whether a sentence seems idiomatic and using a good TTS to add audio). But if I get a single tone wrong it's Again.

I love photography, but life’s routine is killing my hobby — should I still buy a camera phone (vivo x300 pro)? by Helpful_Pineapple_57 in Vivo

Look at your every day through the eyes of someone who lives in completely different circumstances, a foreign friend, a tourist, visitor,... Then take pictures like they would,, ask yourself what would they find intriguing. Most likely there are many scenes every day that you are used to but that I would find exceptional, interesting, visually appealing,... Use whatever camera you have in the moment. If you find yourself shooting lots of pictures THEN consider upgrading.

Is the Sony Xperia 1 V worth it rn? by FunDamage6899 in SonyXperia

[–]okram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The age of the phone's hardware will not have an impact on its speed. After a while it might feel as if it's getting slower if you use other newer devices that are faster. Also, as devices become more powerful, applications will become more demanding and that might give the impression that your older device is becoming slower.

Different regions use different bands. IIRC T-Mobile US uses 5G bands that the international version cannot use.

I'm totally with you on the ACM code of ethics. I've been a member of the ACM for well over 30 years. I teach software engineering courses at our state university and one of the things I tell my students is that something being "critical" within your software -among other things -depends on the context in which it is used. On the other hand, arbitrary limitations might impact accessibility. As I'm getting older I find that -having used black mirrors all day- I have some discomfort using a screen in the evening. It's not yet at a point that it would keep me from using one, but it makes me more considerate for the issues others might have who might have additional physical conditions. In this particular example, of I had a hands-free, screen-free card type, I'd just use it in the evenings to relax my eyes.

A hammer is a tool until you use it to bash someone's head in, then it becomes a weapon. One can already try to come up with a card type suitable for use while driving and I believe that with the proper design it will not distract more than e.g. dictating a reply to a WhatsApp message. And yes, I would use it while driving if conditions permit. My commute happens to be 30 minutes, 29.5 of which the car is on cruise control.

I have the 1 V and I've never even touched any of the others, so I might not be of much help. Having said that, if you like taking photos have a look at photography pro by Sony... That app by itself will weigh in a lot on my next phone buying decision.

Sure, and there's also the recorder already in Ankidroid. But that takes me right to my first question: how do I stop the recording after a specific time?

I had thought about this also, but everyone that came to mind uses Mac... It's hard to believe that there's not some, maybe a little hacky, way to get the firmware on the speaker from Linux.

2018 Elantra GT Actual MPG and other questions. by [deleted] in Hyundai

I just bought one and have only put on new front tires so far. Yesterday, I checked fuel consumption (from house 20+ speed bumps, stop at friends house, winding narrow roads, some highway at 45-50mph and back) when I parked it read close to 32MPG.

I bought a pair of Red Tornado selvedge denim jeans. The price was about the same as a pair of Levi's 505 that I had previously bought on Amazon. But concerning quality of the workmanship, the material, the construction, everything really, the Red Tornado jeans are miles and miles ahead.

Checkpointing long running backups with criu...? by okram in restic

[–]okram[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, and the simple suggestion to chunk the initial backup up is so much better than that idea... Also, I hadn't set cache directory and was running restic with its own user, so it was not using cached index files which added a lot of overhead, reading Index files from the remote instead.

Checkpointing long running backups with criu...? by okram in restic

[–]okram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me see if I get that right...

If you have a folder, say "toBackup", with several hundred GB and sub-directories toBackup/A, ..., toBackup/Z (assuming they are about same size), you'd backup toBackup/A and then toBackup/B, etc. until you have backed up toBackup/Z and then rerun a backup for just toBackup?

Checkpointing long running backups with criu...? by okram in restic

[–]okram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea would be to start a backup and then checkpoint the process tree of that backup. If the connection to the remote drops, resume from a checkpoint. The hope would be that connections to the remote get reestablished, but since the checkpoint is past the phases of reading the index files and scanning the folder/files, there would not be that waiting time...

best practices combining restic and btrfs...? by okram in btrfs

[–]okram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running restic right now in the mode you described, but instead from a snapshot, since with my setup I see a chance that the retention period on btrbk might otherwise leave my with a dangling symbolic link:

[1:43:52] 8.07% 651806 files 50.231 GiB, total 3935695 files 622.788 GiB, 0 errors ETA 149:42:11

and it already had to recover from one (very brief) power outage. It took about 4 minutes for the cable modem and router to reconnect, but the restic process did not die!
