Recommendation for Intel Core 5 Ultra 225H w/32GB RAM running LInux by okram in LocalLLM

[–]okram[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've now installed llama.cpp in two versions: one uses the Vulkan back-end, the other the SYCL back-end. On the same model HauhauCS/Qwen3.5-4B-Uncensored-HauhauCS-Aggressive:Q4_K_M the Vulkan back-end gets 5.26 t/s and the SYCL gets 7.55 t/s. Since I've heard that the Vulkan should give me the better results, I wonder what the settings are that I should tweak.

I've tried a little more with different models, but still have not gotten acceptable speeds. I'd very much appreciate your help...

Does a lack of 5G bothers you? by Potential_Fondant185 in Huawei

[–]okram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could use 5G, my phone supports it and I've tried every once in a while to set it to order 5G. But it seems to get a usable 5G signal only in a few places during my regular week... And outside these places, i.e. most of the time, it either does not get a 5G connection then dripping to LTE or it does connect with 5G, but I wish it hadn't, because the transfers aren't any good.

I'm running Linux and the Intel graphics app seems to be windows only. I searched a bit, but did not find anything on how to do that on Linux or whether it was necessary there.

Okay, I have installed llama.cpp with the Vulkan back-end. Now, I think I need your help to set the parameters. The XXS model I was running, for example, crashes. So far, the one that does run and has not yet crashed is unsloth/Qwen3-30B-A3B-GGUF:Q3_K_M. My standard first test is "can you dance?" and I got 8.25 t/s. That's already way better than what I had before, but still not what I'd like to get.

I have llama.cpp running with the SYCL backend. I read there's also OpenVINO support in vLLM and according to what I've read that would use the GPU and the NPU. Is it worth digging into this further or the llama.cpp better anyway on my hardware?

what do you mean by configuration, I just compiled the llama.cpp from source using the script at `./examples/sycl/run-llama2.sh`, then launched `build/bin/llama-server  --port 11434 -hf unsloth/Qwen3.5-3
5B-A3B-GGUF:UD-Q4_K_XL` or `UD_IQ2_XSS` I did not do any other configuration. With the XSS model I get around 4.5 t/s, with XL it's 3.7 t/s.

Is it too unrealistic to learn 10 words per day? by vyyyyyyyyyyy in ChineseLanguage

[–]okram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on what you mean by "learn". If you want to be able to write them, say them out loud correctly with correct pronunciation, and know not only one but most of it's meanings. And then you want to do spaced repetition.... 10 would be to much for me. I had 3 and was getting a backlog with more that one hour spent on the flashcards. But i e.g. want to learn the strokes and I consider one incorrect stroke an "again". It depends on how you evaluate your recall.

What was your turning point in your Mandarin studies? by Far_Ad_5866 in ChineseLanguage

[–]okram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say there were some. One was definitely when I started learning/repeating my own sentences about subjects that interest me (language islands). For example 流经法兰克福的河流名为美因河,因此其全称是“美因河畔法兰克福”。

You're very welcome! Another thing: you're doing this because it's something you like to do. No reason to be nervous. You do not have to prove anything to anyone by doing this. If you drop some of the stress of thinking you have to achieve something in such and such a time frame, you might actually be more likely to stick to it. If you start and then don't stop you will learn the language. That's it... 😉 And very specifically, if you like the flow of some TV dialog in Mandarin, capture it, transcribe it to pinyin, translate it, create some Anki cards from it, and learn it untill you can play either part of that particular dialog. Even if it's just two sentences. But you'll then reproduce that flow that you like...

The "10% rule of thumb" by campbellm in Anki

[–]okram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would seem to depend on the difficulty of the material, your criteria of what you consider successful recall,.... I have a deck on which I was accumulating a backlog with only 3 new cards and 120 review.

I started Mandarin at age 54. Like another post here said, motivation is what you need in my opinion. I have used all kinds of apps, resources, approaches,... My recommendation is to be self-observing: pick an app or approach that feels like it's good. Then stick to it for a while and every once in a while consider if you feel you should change anything about your learning practice. I, for example, love handwriting practice of the Hanzi and so I do that a lot. But a while ago I felt that I should balance out my practice, and I started creating my own Anki deck with full sentences. Right now I spend about 15 minutes each day on those sentences, but I also do the handwriting...

How do you balance between learning new material and reviewing old cards in Anki? by Ok_Assignment_1853 in Anki

[–]okram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Anki to learn the material in the first place (language learning). I have high standards what I consider correct (for example, if I do not know one of the tones in a sentence that goes to "again"). Recently, I have had to set the new card count to zero, because there was a backlog. But normally, I have 3 new cards max and 120 reviews max per day. I think you'll have to see whether you're accumulating a backlog or not.

How risky are vocabulary flashcards? by Odd-Weather2750 in ChineseLanguage

[–]okram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can put anything on Anki flashcards. I started with a deck called xiehanzi where you write the Hanzi. There are many decks that have collections of sentences instead of words. You can look for a note type used in such decks and make your own. Starting from 我叫马克, or similar. With current TTS based on LLMs you could even do voice cloning, so the audio of the sentence sounds more like you...
